My gut reaction is that they need to be raised up closer to the head rails. Most ships have them wrapping just under the lower head rail. This keeps them above the water if only by a little bit.

 O.C. has this right.
And when you have also done all of the gilded carvings for this current project of yours E.J it becomes even more impressive !!

Hi Tom, if it's any consolation I found planking the hull one of the most challenging I've done. The second layer of planking hid many of the faults and filler used on my model.
 Keep up the good work.

 Cheers...... Fernando 🍻

Here is where it gets a bit ugly, as I can not for the life of me do a good planking job without clinker planks and gaps. So the first step is to add wood filler on those area that need it, which in my case is much of the hull.

Here is another hack that I have been doing. Even though I cut a rabbet at the bow and stern posts, the first planking strips were too thick to be bent enough to fit into it completely, so I just got the ends close while planking, knowing I could use wood filler to get them to curve into the posts better than trying to bend them.

So first I used a Dremel with a sanding disk to roughly sand down the plank ends.

Then I filled in the gaps with the wood filler.

Today I used a flat scraper to scrape down the filler along the posts but don't have a picture of that yet. Stay tuned and the next post will hopefully have a better looking hull as I continue to sand and scrape it down.

Welcome to all those that are now following along.

I have spent the last week or so trying to get the last couple of planks right, especially at the bow. I wanted to make sure I had a nice curve from the first frame into the keel. I ended up removing that section a few times and finally was able to make a nice spieled piece that fit well after I curved it with a planking iron. Here are some pics of that process.

 And the results.

So now the first planking is on and I am ready to start getting it smooth for the second planking, which I will show in the next post.

Here the problem with the waterline and the rigging of the bowspritdown UNDER the waterline. Have you any ideas what is to be done not to get a pair wet dews?

I will echo the above comments and say well done indeed! The scarf joints along with the treenails and bolt location patterns are very neat, clean and uniform. They really make the planking look sharp.

All the port lids have been created and I have started to install them. First 10 are in place along with the cannon for that port. I still need to touch up the paint and adjust the lids, but I am moving along.

Started construction of the port lids. Got the lids themselves built this weekend and am now starting to fit the hardware. Did a test fit on the first one and it seems to be working fine. Now to blacken the hardware and assemble all 58 lids.

 Channels are going up.

I’m holding off on installing the chains on the mizzenmast channel. I’m working on creating some additional scroll work to fit in these spaces and need access below this channel.

I’m not sure yet to the how and what these decorations will look like or even if this is a good idea but, I’m gonna try anyway!

Another weekend has come and gone and with it some more work is completed. Finished rigging the guns and I also built the bracing for the taffrail and ensign.

I’ve started the work on the channels and should have some pictures of that work later in the week.

Well, turning those spindles took some time but, it was worth it in my opinion.

As the last day of the year comes to an end, I thought some overall pictures of the ship would be nice. Over 2 years and 1,448 hours logged in. I'm thinking that 2019 may be the year she is completed. Still have a lot more to do some refresh your popcorn and drink and get comfortable. I'm looking forward to another fun year of model building with you all. Happy New Year my friends!!

Nice work space. I see you have a couple other good looking ships in progress also. The rigging practice on this one will go a long way when you are ready to start on those larger builds.

EJ_L reacted to shipmodel in La Créole 1827 by archjofo - Scale 1/48 - French corvette EJ_L reacted to shipmodel in La Créole 1827 by archjofo - Scale 1/48 - French corvette
 Hi Johann -

Beautiful work on the servings and turning in the thimbles in the pendants. Are you going to tar (blacken) them or leave them the tan color?

One suggestion, if I may - I found that when I seized the head of the pendants and shrouds too closely to the masthead, the total bulk of the seizings of all of the shrouds would not go through the lubber's hole in the tops. I had to redo them so the seizing was below the top so I had some flexibility. I do not know if this problem will arise for you, but you should be aware of it early.

Best of success on the project. I will continue to follow along with interest.

 Dan
