I'm sorry, Bob, but the Tassie Devil is a critically endangered animal. I'm afraid I might have to report you to the National Parks Service!

Hi All,
I have to move away from research for a while to build a little more. Or I will know everything there is to know about the Mariefred and never build her. The Mariefred is a very early (1903) steel boat. So like Nils (Mirabell61), I had to plate her, rivets and all. Maybe I shouldn’t say so but it was a lot easier that I thought it would be. The main problem is finding the right foil for the job. Most of what I found at the hardware store was too thin and doesn’t look right. There were four or five brands where us non-professionals find what we want. But walking down to the end of the store where the contractors go, I found the heaver foil that is needed. I found an old clock gear that I made into a ponce wheel and with just a little practice . . . here’s the results. I’ll accept it as a first try. Now paint and on to the rest of the boat.

Your metal workmanship is out of this world. I would ask for tutoring about doing metal work for my model, but distance between us would make this extremely difficult. Keep up this amazing museum quality ship, she looks great!

Those are cool. I picked one up in Hong Kong in 1966 while on Liberty from USS Intrepd. Bought a couple of ivery figures too. I suspect this ivory is contraband now. Because of environmental rules.
I too am beginning to get cataracts, but doc said not to worry just yet. I'm starting to see halos while night driving.

Good to hear from you!
I NEVER expected that chinese have such (ivory) balls..........................
I can truly understand that lazyness after that long time of working on your CS beneath all that other things you are doing, and have been gone through!

Hello to everybody !!!
At first i want to thank you for your kind care and support
There are several reasons I did not post a while.
At first - puppy is demanding some of my free time, and if she is alone almost all day, I feel she is unhappy if I at the evening go down to workshop and left her alone again. Workshop is for now forbidden space for her for many reasons. Last couple of days I tried to test her, spending some hours in workshop working on my side "play-project" inspired by Chinese Ivory Balls
igranje.mp4
And test run well, so I think soon I will be back to Her Majesty. Rhea is 7 months old now, and she sleep when I am down in workshop.
The second - some extra time I had to spend in office, some extra time visiting doctors, and I want badly to spend some time more with my daughter before she left Serbia forever at Summer/Autumn. My cataract is on early stage, so eventually surgery is planed at February 2018 with further medical consultations. Some other medical research are running through (nothing serious), so my free time drop by drop - gone
The third - After almost two years my Admiral passed, I entered to particular complicated stage of my personal life starting some kind of relationship, also time demanding ...
The fourth - to admit - sometime I am just lazy, and still thinking how to resolve my boats
I really hope to return soon

Hello,
meanwhile, I have completed the assembly of the top of the main mast.
On the first picture all parts to see.
The second picture shows how to make holes with the 0.3 mm drill.
On the last picture the mounted top can be seen.

Hi All, again
Thanky so much for your nice likes!
Next thing was to "superimpose" the engine to the wheel, looks good for me. Cylinder length will be 50mm, with a stroke of 38mm and bore of 12mm.
Best regards

Hi johnhoward
All is drawn for the etching process, but I will have to make a slight change when soldering the parts. In the Bob Hill plans the hubs are in opposit position, but as I will make them one by one this would not be to hard to make. Even the other (now correct) way will be the same work to do, so there is not too much difference to make the wheel. The Bob Hill plans show the spaces between the rings different, the outer are a bit wider than the inner one. I`ve made a screenshot from my 3D Program, to take it to my lathe for turning, but in the "old" version. The drawing is in 1:50 scale, measurings are in 1/10mm!
Best regards& many thanks!

Hi Roger
Found the photo, SEEMS to be close to the boats I expect to build. If you meant this one.
Thank you for the hint! But I did not find the boat from the USS Hartford, maybe I search later for it!
The brass parts are not too complicated to make, that`s what I can do myself. Just the paddlwheel parts are a bit too hard to make, for a showcase model I would print them in 3D , for a floating model I want to have them from brass.
Made the missing parts, the black parts will be photo etched, all yellow things I will turn on the lathe.
Best regards
Gerhard
PS.: I just can HOPE, my build will forfill the high standards..............................

Hi again& many thanks for your interest and so many likes!
Made some progress for the paddlewheel, just on the PC. First parts are ready drawn in 3D but must be transformed to 2D Drawings for photo etching.
BUT; could not stop myself and try to draw it as close as I can to the plans I have. The shaft and some other shims are not made at the moment, will be made later the day!

Hi Johnhoward
The Cairo NEEDS to have that two cylinder engine layout, a single cylinder would not start on his own. With the two cylinder setup I can stop on the lake, and restart again, as the real ship could. I will try to make the engine and wheel without the buckets, power will not be so much that I will need them. But IFthere is less balance, I still can make some. But thatis still a long way to go there, the next Things I do is the core for the cutters. Just have glued the printed sheet of the frames to 1,5mm linden wood, and marked the lines to 10mm wood for sawing them with the juwellers saw. Pics will come tomorrow, so real model building work goes on again1

Gerhardvienna reacted to Louie da fly in 10th-11th century Byzantine dromon by Louie da fly - FINISHED - 1:50
Next step in the carving process. What I call the Megatron stage - because the figure's face resembles some kind of Transformer. I've roughed out the face and given the arms more definition, as well as slightly trimming the body a little closer to the size and shape I want it to be. From this point on, I get very careful about shaving off more wood and only take off a very little at each time, have a look, compare it to how I want it to look, take a little more off and look at it again etc. It's easy to take wood off, but if you've cut off too much you can't put it back.
At this point I move from a Stanley knife
to a scalpel with a No. 11 blade for the finer work.
Now I put a lot of effort into getting the face right. Once that's ok I go on with the body. If I mess up the face I have to throw the figure away and start again. I might as well do it now, rather than do all the work getting the body perfect and then have to throw the figure away because I messed up the face - it's just wasted effort.
Still somewhat Megatron, but looking a bit more like a human's face.
And here he is from the side
Unfortunately, the next photos in the carving sequence came out all blurry, so I've had to skip a step. Here's the figure almost complete.
I'm afraid he looks a little like a Tolkien dwarf, but when he's painted up he should look more Greek and less dwarvish - the "dwarf's hood" is really some kind of turban, and I think a good paint job will point this up. And I have the chance to show the Byzantine splendour of the clothes.
Oh, and I only realised from looking at the photos that his pedal extremities are colossal - his feet's too big. I'll trim them down and I think this will reduce the dwarvish look as well.
I'm pretty happy with those fingers . . .
Steven
