I am sure you're releaved it's done. Without a doubt the figures on deck and in the wheelhouse make her come alive.
Once she is mounted in the case she will be a thing of beauty and Mark is right she is deserving of being in a museum rest assured.
Congrat's Nils!!!!!

Hi Lou
The jig system for small turned wooden parts is "stolen" from Johann @archjofo. I could not work without a lathe, that is one of the most worthful tools for model building. And useful for some repair works in the houshold too!
The patrol boat was my first attempt in scratchbuilding a boat, I must buy two new contollers to bring her back to the pond!

Can you imagine being a kid and having a grandfather like Nils? Visiting his home and seeing his models would be like going to heaven for a child...and for an adult like me.
Just beautiful and so entertaining to see. It enlightens all the senses.

Project completed !
The 26 month duration journey has come to an end, and I would like to thank my international fellow builder freinds for following this build, for their suggestions and helpful comments along the way.
All the appreciative and kind compliments have given me very much drive to get the project complete, in a way that I am myself satisfied with the result.
I´ll choose a representive bunch of pics for exponating into my gallery in a couple of days.
Here come the final photos of the ship as built and in a large set of four lots, and without comments as all pics are self explaining.....
I made a few more detail shots for all those that like details. The only thing missing are the rudder blades and the tillers for the the open lifeboats (paint was`nt dry yet), but I`ll get them on before the KWdG goes into her glass case

Continued work on the elevator today - all done, now. Once the rudder is complete, I'll snip away the central support (left from the manufacturing process) and then have a completed empennage.

Wings, top and bottom, completed. Dihedral added to the lower wing. Hinges added to the ailerons. Now working on the empennage (elevator first). Lots of metal bending going on ;-)

All my 40 of 15/32" are cut.
Am now in a switching mode between Syren but also Bluenose. Meaning I am alternating between the two.

I'm on the fence with them, since I've done cloth. on my second Cutty Sark, I had to paint them because I got replacements and they were beige......they were off white in the kit. I couldn't get the complete set, so it was the only option. they did come out quite well actually.....got rid of that sheen and everything. painted a flat gray with a wash coat, and they look pretty good. the one thing they lack though is the life like detail that only cloth sails can provide........the stitching, the seams......you can add the corner reinforcements and even eyelets. I haven't sen too much done with plastic sails......but it's like anything else in modeling.......how far do you want to go with it?
I've seen cloth on plastic.......done right, it looks really good. thanks Glenn and EJ for the kind word....this is a really neat subject to touch on. funny too......I was looking through my old pictures, and I happened on the first U.S.S. United States, the C.S.S. Alabama, and the first Cutty Sark....all three are from the 1:96 series. I did a Connie too, but I have no pictures of her. all of these models sported their plastic sails.......it was all I used to do, before I came here
have you ever gone into a craft store, and seen those prebuilt ships {nautical decorations}......Hobby Lobby sells them. I look at the sails, and some have been sprayed with so much lacquer, they look like plastic....and they are cloth sails. they look terrible! the admiral tells me...."you could do better than that!" of course, I tout the rigging as well.....but I still imagine what I could do to change it.
thanks as well to all who hit the like button

the clew/sheet lines were rigged.......it wasn't till I rigged the lower and top sail braces, that I realized I forgot to photog the steps. so I took 'em...focusing on the groups. first the clew/sheet lines.
then the braces......I like how the blocks show up in the rigging
I'm done just in time to take Gibbs out...........time to appease the carpet monster

Gerhardvienna got a reaction from hexnut in SMS Danzig 1851 by Gerhardvienna - 1:50 scale - RADIO
Hi again, and thank you all for watching, nice likes, and comments!
Hello Joe
Tutorial will follow, when this set of davits is finished, so I can copy everything into a new report. But it is still some way to go.............
Today I finished the soldering form, so the next things to do will be the fabrication of the roller sheets. Every davit will carry 3 rollers of 3mm diameter, with 1,1mm width. More about that will follow soon.
Grooves for the spacer cut into the outer form parts
Spacer for rollers in place, no slashes cut at this time.
That pin (with the white head) is important, it locates the place for the rollers axle!
Slashes cut to the spacer. This slashes are necessary to place the roller distance sheets, distance between the sheets will be 1,2mm, the whole head of the davit is only 4,8mmwide. The inner sheets are 0,1mm, the outer ones 0,5mm thick.
It took me 3 attempts to make the spacer, the smallest mistake will ruin the whole thing.
Regards
Gerhard

Hi Glenn
Nice to have you here! So, sit down a little longer, and take another glass..............
Thank you all too for your nice likes!
The last days were filled up with even more work for my home improvement, but I found some hours too for the SMS DANZIG. The four davits are finally cut, and the soldering form is almost done.
Davits cut, two of them have still their paper sheets glued on. This will be removed after grinding and filing to final shape
The soldering form, stages to make it.
1), draw the inner contour of the part you will have to solder. This inner form must be as thick as the part that will be set into the form, 1mm in this case.
2), make the spacer for the parts to be soldered in
3), cut the inner part of the soldering form, and the place for the spacer
Outer parts of the soldering form follow the outer contour of the davit
The second outer part of the form will be made today, even the cuttings to the spacer. Some holes will be drilled, they are important to fix the form as well as to place the thin metal sheets that will hold the rollers later.
Will be continued.....................
Regards
Gerhard
