Keith Simmons got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Tempus-class 90 & 150 by Keith Simmons - FINISHED - scale 1/32
    Hi all,

Well, here is another build that is a bit out of my comfort zone but something I had to try. I am building both Yachts at the same time to work out the details on the 90 and apply them to the 150 which I hope to display prominently over my fireplace..

With some basic dimensions, a scale conversion calculator ( using these numbers as a base line) and some pictures I started by making the deck layouts. The 90 will be 37 1/2" L with a beam of 7" and a draft of 4". The 150 is 46 1/2" L with a beam of 8" and a 5" draft.

As I don't have the classic expertise in hull builds maybe my idea of a floating frame will work, we shall see.Hope everything goes well and I don't disappoint.....

    Thanks for looking,  Keith

    Hi again Patrick,

These yachts caught my eye because of the sheer beauty of them. During my research I found that the designer from Humphreys Yacht Design, used the J class as his inspiration. He said he especially wanted to pay homage to the great yachts of the 1930s.

One thing for sure, these two yachts won't be small, I haven't achieved the level of miniaturization you are so adept at...

Cheers and keep up the great work.   Keith

    Well Patrick,
Just noticed you did a J class yacht and a wonderful job of it too !!!!!   You have set the bar very high....
Still don't know how you get so much detail in a small package....  Once again, very nice model

    Hi Keith

Thanks and greatly appreciated! Funny thing is, that I'd forgotten just how beautiful the lines of a J Class yacht are until I opened your post above. Which is strange because I pass my rendition of Rainbow umpteen times a day and never give it a moment's notice. But, you've now made me reminisce on the reasons why I built my model of her in the first place. I don't think anything can beat the J's for sheer beauty, majesty and power. They're truly magnificent boats.

Thanks once again and all the best!

    Cheers

    Hi everyone!

A big thank you to everyone who has shared in Rainbow's journey! Thanks for all your comments, feedback, advice and, of course, the Likes! Piet, Dave, Mike and Elia - a special thanks to you guys for your last comments.

Well, I can safely say that Rainbow is about 99% finished. I just need to do some touching up to the hull's paint job, as well a bit more cleaning up of the rigging, but essentially, she's finished. The mainsail has been attached to the mast. The genoa is set and the port side railing has been done.

    Here're the photos.

    Cheers

    Patrick

ROUND TOOTHPICKS AND OLD BUSINESS CARDS : To make wooden doors.
1- Spread glue on a business card or similar object
2-Cover it with round toothpicks and weight until dry
3-Paint with black or dark brown ink or paint, making sure the paint goes all the way down between toothpicks.
4- When paint dries, cut to shape and sand the toothpicks flat, or sand and cut to shape: your choice. The roundness of the toothpicks will allow you to make the line between planks wider or narrower the more or less you sand.
5- Add black cardboard hinges. Use nails to make doorknobs, add handles, etc...

Glad this tip has got many nice comments!

I had a pretty frustrating week trying to assemble the boilers. I'm not satisfied with the appearance of the .01 thick brass. Embossing rivet heads in it created some distortion in it that was difficult to eliminate. I'm just happy to be done with it.

Brass plates with embossed rivet heads.

    Testing fit of boiler plates.

    Blackened boiler plates.

The steam drums were constructed similar to the mud drums with the addition of the flanged pipe for the steam supply line.

Front of firebox and panel inserts blackened.

    Panels inserted.

Kevin's notes point out that Heroine probably had a brick lined ash pan but not an ash trough to the side of the vessel. He points to an example excavated from the wreck of the New Orleans. Several firebricks were found in Heroine's remains measuring 4" X 8 1/2" X2 1/8.

    Brick lining of the firebox

Brick lined ash pan added. I added the wooden plugs where the boiler caps should be. They will provide a fastening point for the boilers breaching and will not be seen.

Boilers almost complete. I still have to add the feedwater check valve and safety valves.

Next week I will finally get to work on the upper works. After a frustrating week with brass sheet, I'm looking forward to getting back to woodwork. Below is Kevin Crisman's reconstruction of Heroine's profile.

I got a little bit more of the boilers done this week.  We have very little of the actual boilers so they will be a little simplified.  I will be including the mud drums, steam drums and safety valves.  Fortunately, we do have a standpipe and check valve for the feedwater line.  I'll add the check valve next week.

All the parts for the standpipes.

The standpipes actually stood several inches taller and ended with a flange for the boiler tube.  The sheathing of the flame bed sat on the arched webbing.

Completed standpipes minus the checkvalve.  I didn't notice until looking at the photos this morning that the webbing didn't seat properly on the tops of the tubes in a couple of spots.  I'll have to correct that on monday.

Making the mud drums and steam drums.

Dummy endcaps for the boilers. Everything else will be sheathed in .01 thick brass.

    Covering the boiler tubes.

Port side of boiler sheathed.  I still need to add wide strips on the boiler tubes to represent the overlapping plates.  The holes for the standpipes still haven't been drilled underneath so it doesn't sit flush on deck yet.

Keith Simmons reacted to Jaager in How to best apply stains
A stain is essentially a paint.  If you apply it before glue assembly - there is a chance that the glue joint will fail  because the stain will keep the glue from penetrating the wood.    Give some thought to using an aqueous or alcohol based wood dye. It penetrates the wood instead of being a surface  coat.  If it is water based, you first wet the wood with water or water  with some PVA glue mixed in.  This will raise the grain  - the wood is sanded when dry and then dyed.  It will not need to be sanded again so no removal of dye.  The wood will glue as well as it will in a raw state.  A clear satin or matt  finish applied after assembly.  A dye will leave the wood looking as though it was the original wood - instead of the "muddy" effect of a stain.
