RGL got a reaction from Javlin in Chikuma by Javlin - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC - IJN Heavy Cruiser
Well rigged mate! Once you start it becomes quite simple and you’re finished before you know it.

So,this is were I am at the rigging is completed I tried quite a few times to get a sagging line that is not hard getting two next to each other do the same thing.I finally in the end went a taut line though one or two are to taut that area out front of the SS was a little of a PIA till I just backed off an maybe try Mike's idea about some sprue for curved line on Mogami.I knocked off some planes that need to be reattached and the decals for the sternwith some touchups in paint..

In US Navy practice, Flag/Signal Halyards were natural jute or hemp, tan/brownish in color...
Guy lines/stays would be steel cable painted dark grey or black....
Radio aerials would be bare metal, either steel (blackish) or aluminum (greyish) wire ....
Same as British naval practice, which is where the first major capital ships of the IJN came from.... And which would be copied by them when they started building their own.....
Signal halyards were running lines thru a sheave and always paid off taut when not in use, when in use, they had a bit of slack left in them to allow the flag to extend in the breeze and be readable....
Stays are always taut... (as time wore on they would be adjusted with turnbuckles as they slackened with age)
Radio Aerials would have some slack to them to allow for expansion/contraction, since they were so thin too taut would cause them to break.... (on a model they would appear taut)
But then this was US Navy practice, I find it hard to believe that it would be any different in the other navies using the same/similar equipment and materials...

I thought this might make an interesting return to small sea models after Campanula.
I was a little disappointed in the part count and the moulding quality is not great Just one sprue of parts. Plastic is quite soft.
so it is really going to be a painting exercise. Maybe I can try a little chipping - not done that before.
The hull halves have no location / alignment features. I used pins through the three lifting eyes to get it all aligned. There is a considerable ridge between the halves to remove
So I have most of the major parts in place and should finish the rest ready for primer.
Thanks for looking in
Alan

RGL got a reaction from mikegr in U-9 by RGL - FINISHED - Das Werk - 1/72 - PLASTIC
Pretty much done. I need to patiently wait on the mail for a few things now. I painted the wire handrails grey and rusted them slightly and added a flag from a different set which is much nicer than the kit one.

RGL reacted to CDW in Yamato Type 94 46cm Gun Main Turret No.1 by CDW - FINISHED - Takom - 1:72 Scale - PLASTIC
Thanks much for the comments gentlemen.
I have not acquired the German guns yet, but it's possible I may decide to do so at some time, particularly if I see them on a discount sale. There is also the secondary triple gun turret for the Yamato in 1/48 scale. Just saw they released the 1:72 Missouri main gun turret. So many models, so little time.

Thanks. I’m in the process of doing the rigging at the moment, and I’ve ordered a 5cm German deck gun for her from Micromaster. Might be accurate but who knows, it will look great. I’ve recieved some gas patch machine guns for her which really are not that much better than the kit ones.
it’s massive and an absolute challenge but quite fun.
So the Canberra model shipwrights has their display this weekend. Representing my club I Brough some plastic ships. There is a guy here who carves better than any 3D printer does. I’ll take photos tomorrow

RGL reacted to mikegr in Russian Naval Base by mikegr - 1/950 - 3D-printing - DIORAMA
Looking at the pictures i noticed that there are many building options available.
No ice on subs, full ice on sea
Lots of ice on sea, no ice on subs
moderate amount on ice/snow on both objects

Why in 1/950? I will explain.
During my first research for 3d printable models and parts I came up with some submarines. Among many I download and printed a freeware file of Akula Class sub. It was the first ship to be printed so some experimentanion would be needed.
After testing several pieces were complete in good detail in 1/700
scale. Or I thought so. While testing and calculating scales my mind was at Alfa Class a sub significantly smaller than Akulas. After doing some maths It was obvious that I was left with a bunch of Akulas in 1/950 scale. You can see the difference of the size in 1/700 and 1/950 in the photo
Not sure what to do with them I decide to built a diorama using at least two of them and maybe another class. The scenery would be icy. It will be my first diorama including sea and terain scape. A combo of 3d print and hand work.
