Beautiful work! I am really enjoying seeing the different construction techniques you have been using. It is nice when I get to learn something new and I am doing that with your build. I am looking forward to seeing more of it as you progress.

    Hello Mark,

I've only been on MSW for a few months and it's taking some time to get around and see what folks are building.  I just wanted to say that the work you're doing on this build is simply top notch and the info you provide as you proceed is so helpful for a novice like me. Thanks.

A veritable forest of ventilators!  They look great. The numbers of them alone would put off the less brave, Nils!

    Beautiful work, Nils.  As always.

Coincidentally I run into some historical references to the Grosse which might be of interest:

    April,1897
"The world was growing more chaotic and speeding up. Rudyard Kipling could be spotted in his six-horsepower motorcar thundering around at fifteen miles an hour. The race among the great shipping companies to see whose liners could cross the Atlantic in the shortest time intensified and grew more and more costly as the size and speed of each ship increased and as the rivalry between British and German lines became freighted with an ever-heavier cargo of national pride. In April 1897 at the Vulcan shipyard in Stettin, Germany, thousands of workers raced to prepare the largest, grandest, fastest oceanliner yet for its launch on May 4, when it would join the stable of ships owned by North German Lloyd Line. Everything about this new liner breathed Germany’s aspiration to become a world power, especially its name, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, and its decor, which featured life-size portraits of its namesake and of Bismarck and Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke. The launch was to be overseen by Kaiser Wilhelm II himself."   "Thunderstruck, by Erik Larson, Broadway Books, 2006"   I am reading your entire log from page one to get an idea of what's involved in building this type of ship from scratch.  It is definitely a project beyond my capabilities ... but maybe one day    ,

    Hi Lawrence,

thank you for your nice words, I`m meanwhile still at the boats deck and doing the coamings for the superstructure it`s planking with pencil caulking at the edges, on 2 mm wide 0.6 mm thick srtips

    Nils

The hights of the vents, above deck, still need to be adjusted later on

The three aft winches will be in approximately these positions

here planking of the aft boats deck has taken place ( no fairing done to it yet )

I agree with Michael on taking the opportunity to learn the skill. The more practice you take the easier and quicker it becomes. One of the reasons I like double planked hulls. I try to build both layers as if they were the finish layer so that hopefully one day I can just single plank my hulls like they should be. I'm not that good yet.

Always give your planking your best and that will also aid in making  a nice smooth finish for you copper which if something becomes a whoops can cover right up. Something else to keep in mind with coppering is that glues do not always want to stick to wood fillers, plaster, sheet rock mud or many types of smoothing agents that are used when compared to raw wood. Having your hull with as minimal of filler on it is definitely a worth while goal to help out later.

In any event, I know you will make a great looking ship!

    Hi Gary

Many thanks and I greatly appreciate your compliments! I'm not sure about the 'master' tag.  I guess it just boils down to the fact that I love this hobby and in doing so, I love what I do.

Have a great week and welcome aboard.

    Cheers and thanks

Thanks for the comments and the "likes".

The best laid plans of mice and men... an Admiralty meeting.  We discussed progress and plans then "if I can't see it, why do it?  You'll save a couple of months, right?".   "Err.. yes.  But I want to do it because it's there.  I'll know it."  Well, so much for argument.  It's her ship and I'll do it.

So,.. I scraped the planking, added the oven and mizzen mast step and applied a coat of Wipe on Poly.   And then moved to the gundeck.

Beams are in and the furniture on deck was salvaged from Version 1.  It's all destined for the scrapbox except for the riding bitts.  I just decided I can do better.   There's a dummy bowspit in place.  Carlings need to be added at various hatchways.

So... 4" of deck planking (except the center area which is 8") and 4" for the coamings.  4" thick coamings for the hatches on top of the 8" center area.  What else... planking will follow the French style of following the hull lines.  And the ceiling.

Sorry for thinking out loud...   There's a pantry around the mizzen mast and rudder lines, a "cabinet" around the rudder, a step/storage at the transom along with all the other furniture on the gundeck.  The partition for the wardroom/Great Room is on the table as far as possible.  It was removable as was the captain's and executive officer's bedplace.   I won't get into all the politics and issues with the wardroom not being the Captain's cabin, roundhouses (Captain's bedplace and dayroom), etc.

I'm done babbling.... I have my work cut out for me so here's pics.....
