Robin Lous got a reaction from Elijah in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
Don't feel bad about it EJ, kit bashing is sometimes like playing 3 dimensional chess with Sheldon Cooper.

I do part 5 a bit later...I made the planks longer there, so I can cut them to match the cabin wall.
Minor update..

Mario beautiful work. I just ordered the MS kit to start after my viking ship. I may follow your lead on a diorama.

More pix with a different camera. Not a lot better, but I still get to flood this thread with pix.
I'm at a point where I am having to think up things to do. I believe all the tasks are done. Added the rudder chain. Got the tiller and boom rigging done, although I kinda bashed the design in the plans. I just couldn't do it that way. I even started the boat name using dry transfer stickers but I ran short one "A". More on order and I will probably paint over what you will see in the pix and try again. Those decals ain't easy.
Got out the compressor and began blowing as much junk as I could off. Found that some make up brushes are very good at brushing lint/dirt around without doing damage to things. They are very soft and come in all sorts of shapes & sizes. Got quite a set at Walmart today.
Also ordered the display case today. This one is going to my dad's. Back a few months when Joel passed I said I was dedicating the completion of the build, particularly the rigging to him. So at some point I will put together a few words in his memory. If you have anything you'd like to add on his behalf be thinking about that. We'll figure out how/where to publish it.
Well here's a few more pix.

I tried again to get some pix. Brought the boat in the house. Put it up against a blank wall, Used the flash every time. I'm still not happy with the outcome. My one last try will be with a different camera. Here's a few of the ones that came out better.
Keep in mind this is only the standing rigging and maybe 1/2 of the running rigging - sheets, halyards and braces. But I think it is enough to give the general impression. Can't imagine how busy the thing would be had I added all the lines for sails. Maybe even too much.
Left to do: rudder chain, tiller and boom rigging, trim loose ends of ropes, clean the deck (dust bunnies), name on sides & stern.
Regarding the last item. I tried some dry transfer decals with minimal success. Seems like that would have been the easiest way. I found some lettering that I liked - good font, good size. But they just don't transfer very well. Of course it is hard to hold the boat at the right angle, hold the transfer sheet still, then burnish the lettering. I'm wondering if a sort of 'name plate' would work where I take a strip of wood, paint it, apply the letters then glue that on the boat. Gonna need something like decals for this - painting is out of the question.

Robin, are you planning to place part S (schot) later? Because the deck has to be planked up to this part and I noticed you haven't placed it so far.

Those tree nails will be a long and tedious venture but it looks like it will be well worth the effort. Looking good!!

And the grating...
Made of 1x1mm walnut strips. This also helps me with the "no staining policy".
A dry fit...
I think I'll somewhat reduce the width of the cap planks...a tad bit too massive to my liking now.
More soon, planking the deck.

It's been a busy day on the shipyard...
I finished the hatches.
The forward and cargo hatch are made of planks sitting on the deck...curved when needed, planks lining the hole inside the hull and capping planks.
The rear hatch a bit simpler, because it will get a lid.
And a change of plan...a less sophisticated grating, like the one on the replica Duyfken.
After all, it's a humble ship and discovering a wasteland called Australiosomething...or something like that... doesn't give her the right to show off with fancy gratings.
So I'll scratchbuild the grating. I can do the deck planking now.

I finished planking the centre part of the deck.
And I used this photo to make the mast foot...
Because the caulking between these planks is very wide, I used 0,4 mm thin walnut strips for this.
After all...the walnut tree nails I'll use on the deck are not tree nails, but is also caulking, so it does match.
The wider/heavier planks (Dutch: schaarstokken) next to the centre part shown here also...not in place...just to show them.
I painted the sides of the deck planks with dark smoke brown (Vallejo 70.939).
Tree nailing this part of the deck is next...I hope I can nail this (lol), it can make or break the look of the deck. Very scary job!

I'm not sure of course, but these photo's (and others, but copyright) show the grating I made...
Is there a grating expert in da house?

Robin Lous got a reaction from John Allen in Duyfken by Robin Lous - Kolderstok - Scale 1:50
Might usually be true, but this is how it looks on the replica ship. I didn't study 1595 gratings used on a Dutch pinas, so it can be wrong.
Now busy with the planking...
Before someone says the planks near the mast are not staggered, that's because this part will be covered with mast foot planks.
This is the part in between the schaarstokken (translation?). I use wider planks for them.
I'll tree nail the deck with 0,5 mm walnut (the planks are 4 mm wide).
Since work will become increasingly busy until the end of the year...I'll be happy when I get the deck done this year...and perhaps finish the balsa.
More soon, but it will slow down on my shipyard.

An interesting issue arose when i fitted the main deck after planking. It seems that the central part of frame 4 is too high. Before doing anything drastic, time to figure out what, if anything, may have gone wrong. here is a pic to show the details
the red arrow shows how much the frame is off. If not corrected, the main deck will not seat correctly onto frames 2,3. there are 2 decks that are fitted above this one and the alignment of those 2 seemed correct when I dry fitted them. Also, where frame 4 meets the bearding line seems OK too (yellow arrow). Here is a shot of the plan
Looks OK here too. this is how the deck is seated with nothing done. Red arrows show the gap.
As I could find nothing wrong with the alignment of the overlying decks or with frame 4 at the rabbet, I have to assume that the frame is off by a few mm in the area of the yellow circle - so this is what I trimmed down.
now deck is seated perfectly along frames 2-4. hopefully I don't have to modify anything else as the upper decks go in.
This is the planked main deck, not yet sealed with poly
