After the frames have been attached, the first deck to place is the orlop.  Although the manual shows this as 1 piece, the kit splits the deck down the middle for 2 pieces - much easier to fit this way.  The deck is planked off the model and then glued onto the frames.  The hatch coamings and gratings are then fitted.  As others have pointed out, the gratings are photo-etched brass and not wood.  One problem with replacing them with wood is that the grating openings may not be to scale - often they are too big.  As this deck is deep within the ship, it won't be too visible anyway so I'll decide later if I want to change out to wood for the upper decks.  here are pics of the deck pre and post application of satin poly.  I think the gratings are acceptable.

Also note that I have decided to not use treenails to the deck.  At this scale they would be barely visible anyway.

Greetings.  This is my first attempt at a build log, though it is far from being my first ship.  Having recently finished HMS Kingfisher by LSS (see gallery), the Revenge caught my eye and I decided to have a go of it.   For those of you who decide to follow along, please note that my work on models can be sporadic at times.  I will try to post updates as I complete each page or 2 of the manual.  Kit was ordered from Ages of Sail and here is what comes in the box.

I finished planking the centre part of the deck.

And I used this photo to make the mast foot...

Because the caulking between these planks is very wide, I used 0,4 mm thin walnut strips for this.
After all...the walnut tree nails I'll use on the deck are not tree nails, but is also caulking, so it does match.

The wider/heavier planks (Dutch: schaarstokken) next to the centre part shown here also...not in place...just to show them.
I painted the sides of the deck planks with dark smoke brown (Vallejo 70.939).

Tree nailing this part of the deck is next...I hope I can nail this (lol), it can make or break the look of the deck. Very scary job!

    More soon,

    I love this CA applicator...

you can pin point tiny drops with it. Clean with a lighter and fine sandpaper...will last.

Yes. Dafi is who I get my photo etch stuff from.
I have the draft numbers on the rudder which I think is a mistake.  These numbers are cool details I try to add.

I ended up putting them all on individually.  I just bought the parts/plates I needed from Dafi.
What I need are 1/100 scale fittings.  Blocks, barrells, figures.

My serving machine broke. kind of stuck on being able to do rigging.

(2019 now) I am now really regretting putting those draft numbers on the rudder!

I'm new to MSW and ship building.  I have done a lot of modeling over the years.
And I have found out that ship building is the 'meat and potatoes', if you will, of modeling.

I have lost a lot of my earlier photos of the cannon being built and the hull construction.  I followed pete coleman example and others to get ideas for details.
Books are needed to build these ship models if you want to even try to be accurate.

I'll be submitting a lot of my photos. Many of which will be rather boring but I want to preserve them somewhere other than Facebook.

All comments and tips are welcome!

Karl : thanks for your post. This, my first effort at rigging a “complicated” ship, is still a learning experience as I move along, and fairly confusing at best. Yes your suggestion will also be incorporated. Thanks for your thoughts.

That area will be much more involved than the just (finally) completed bow section. All those ropes were easy to place, and pin-holes were not hiding (;-).

Yes, I did some preliminary rope installations at the foremast section and, as I had mentioned - not enough pin-holes. I will add pins to tighten up the lines and also need to avoid crossing things up. Also Karl I am using the rigging sheets that you sent me (Billings), along with the Vasa museum profile sheet - almost ignoring the Corel sheets. In any case - when the Vasa II book is published whatever I do will be wrong - Not an issue for me any more. Just want to make sure that all lines don't cross each other up. Also with furled sails I need to be cautious how I locate certain lines (inside or outside other sail lines)

B,E. As always thanks for your continued visits – Your suggestion is very plausible. Much appreciated – I had not thought of that – thanks for your kind words as well.

So I have completed the bow section. I promise that these photos will be the last from there !!

As always mates thanks so much for your advice, and likes.

    Cheers,

Thank you so much for your kind reply,     my next move  will be to scratch build three ladders, to fit down to the lower deck through the frames I constructed, to be honest she is going to need a lot of scratch building  as I lost a lot of the fittings including  - gun barrels/carriages,  bitts,  belay pins,  bollards, capstan, cathead, deadeys's,  figurehead,  helm wheel   etc.

Might usually be true, but this is how it looks on the replica ship. I didn't study 1595 gratings used on a Dutch pinas, so it can be wrong.

    Now busy with the planking...

Before someone says the planks near the mast are not staggered, that's because this part will be covered with mast foot planks.
This is the part in between the schaarstokken (translation?). I use wider planks for them.
I'll tree nail the deck with 0,5 mm walnut (the planks are 4 mm wide).

Since work will become increasingly busy until the end of the year...I'll be happy when I get the deck done this year...and perhaps finish the balsa.

More soon, but it will slow down on my shipyard.

the mast foot looks very good.......as does your grating.   I thought you nailed it according to the picture you showed......don't understand what all the fuss was about     if you plan to keep the decking a lighter color,  then you'll do well with the tree nailing......but if you plan a darker finish,  you may lose some of the appeal.  depending on the scale,  some elect not to......but with the width of planking your using,  you should do well with it      she's look'in great so far.
