Robin Lous reacted to Tim Curtis in Revenue Cutter by austristan - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - Scale 1:48 - First build
I wonder if you should ask Bluejacket for a replacement hull. I dont think this is up to their standard. The ensign kits are meant to be for first timer. These are problems you should not have to deal with.

Robin Lous reacted to Lukasvdb in Le Superbe by Lukasvdb - Heller - 1/150 - PLASTIC - First ship of the line ever built
Starboard side is also done! A huge milestone reached for this build. I have to admit I have to get used to the look now after she has been so long without her gun port lids. But I'm happy with the results. Needs some cleaning up here and there but that will be taken care of when I feel like it.
Hope you guys like it!

Yea I think I would work with whats there, and you can fill it in where needed with a sawdust and glue mix and it will be golden

Robin Lous reacted to moreplovac in Greek Warship Bireme by moreplovac - FINISHED - Amati - Scale 1/35
No much time for shipyard work during this long weekend; managed to work on ram a bit and to transfer basic templates to the more stiffer cardboard. This will be final template for a copper sheets..

Robin Lous got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Duyfken by Robin Lous - Kolderstok - Scale 1:50
Thanks gentlemen!
I already sand the top layer down to approx 0,5 mm...will sand it to half that thickness.
The Batavia grating is remarkably close to what the Duyfken builders did. Frugal Dutch not so fancy gratings.
Thanks again for your help!

I'm not sure of course, but these photo's (and others, but copyright) show the grating I made...
Is there a grating expert in da house?

Robin Lous got a reaction from John Allen in Duyfken by Robin Lous - Kolderstok - Scale 1:50
Might usually be true, but this is how it looks on the replica ship. I didn't study 1595 gratings used on a Dutch pinas, so it can be wrong.
Now busy with the planking...
Before someone says the planks near the mast are not staggered, that's because this part will be covered with mast foot planks.
This is the part in between the schaarstokken (translation?). I use wider planks for them.
I'll tree nail the deck with 0,5 mm walnut (the planks are 4 mm wide).
Since work will become increasingly busy until the end of the year...I'll be happy when I get the deck done this year...and perhaps finish the balsa.
More soon, but it will slow down on my shipyard.

I've built the Forward 3rd Deck. This went together well, though there is a slight mistake in one small area - it's going to be difficult to spot later on when other items are fitted, so I'll leave it :
I've glued the 3rd deck to the 2nd deck. The mistake referred to earlier can be seen below, where the two decks don't align properly in the black area. A bit of paint will fix it :
The balustrade at the forward end of the deck was difficult (I had to re-do it twice), mainly due to no instructions on how it went together. This is a recurring theme of this kit :

Robin Lous reacted to amateur in Duyfken by Robin Lous - Kolderstok - Scale 1:50
I checked Witsen
He describes grating as you made them:
the lower layer, measured about two inches high, two wide,
the upper layer nailed on top, battens half inch thick, about 3 inch wide,
I guess the lower layer is around two-three inches apart.
so you would be correct, as soon as you follow the advice of Hans: sand back until zero thickness

Yep! I did! ...and I stick to that! absolutely gorgeous. I hope I can learn from this. Every little bit I can pick up from your build is a leap forward for me.

And the grating...
Made of 1x1mm walnut strips. This also helps me with the "no staining policy".
A dry fit...
I think I'll somewhat reduce the width of the cap planks...a tad bit too massive to my liking now.
More soon, planking the deck.
