Hi Steve, thanks for your query.  Here are a few photos of where I'm currently at -
As you can see its coming on slowly.  I took the decision to drop those three planks in because I was having great difficulty twisting the bow planks to flow with the curve of the bulkhead (if you see what I mean).  I've pretty much mastered the bend around the bow and stern but I could see myself 'going off line' as I came to the bulkhead curve.  I think I've done something fundamentally wrong at some point and I hope you or your more experienced colleagues can put me on the right track.
I've also been busying myself with cannons and other deck furniture.
Thank you once again for your interest.
    Cheers

Hi Steve, every time I look at this log I learn something new.  I have to say it is amazing and you should be justifiably proud of your efforts.

The colour scheme is fantastic and makes my Constructo kit seem dowdy by comparison.  I presume that you have taken the colours solely from Mackays book and not from Billings instructions?

Can I ask you an unrelated question blocks and their rigging.  While my planking is ongoing I'm looking to make up some blocks.  My Constructo kit rigs them with copper wire!  I'm a newbie as you know, but this seems like a cop out to me.  Having sail that they are 3mm and the thought of rigging them with line frightens the life out of me - what do you think?
Keep up the good work and providing me with a great reference project.
    Cheers

Hi Steve, I've really enjoyed reading your log and it's been really informative.  I'm just about to start a Constructo 1:50 Bounty and I'm just pulling some photos together to start my own log.  I was really pleased to see your deck planking configuration as my kit doesn't specify what it should be and it provides long planking lengths which wouldn't be very realistic so I'm going to adopt your 120mm system.  Thank you once again for such a brilliant log.
    Cheers

Hi Steve, thanks for your help as I'd pretty much given up.  What frustrates me is that I have already posted photos without any problems!!  Thank you for your kind interest I've done loads to the ship and the deck gear and have shed loads of photos. I will have another go and if it doesn't work conventionally I'll take your advice and try Faststone.  Thank you once again for your encouragement.
    Cheers

I'm progressing pretty well and I am now faced with the sanding/shaping job at the bow, keel and bulkheads.  I'm looking ahead to the deck planking and I am trying to find what the planking configuration was on the original ship.  The kit comes with lengths of planking long enough to do the job but I think this is a bit of a cop out.  I've read the Deck Planking tutorial and I'm looking to do 120mm planks with an 'every 5' configuration as I think it would look good.  However, does anyone know what the original configuration was or was there a common practice for ships of that era?  Here are some photos of where I'm at.

leginseel reacted to RMC in HMS Vanguard by RMC - FINISHED - Amati/Victory Models - scale 1:72
The fore and main yards are now more or less finished.  The stunsail booms are to be finally fixed (to do later next week) , but all the rest of the bits and pieces are complete. I have tried to show as much detail as possible in the following photos. I took them a few days ago, and now realise I didn't label them, so I'm not sure which is which - anyway, it's the principle that is important.   I've certainly learned a few things in doing these two yards. For those who may find my experience useful I suggest:

         *first, drill the holes ready for the footrope stirrups;
*second, fit the stunsail boom rings; (I have not used the kit fittings which are quite poor.  I show how I made replacements earlier in this log.)
         *third dry-fit the booms; and
*last, fit the various blocks having made sure the dry-fitted booms do not foul them.  (Something I wish I had  foreseen.)

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

    Here are both the yards.

I just noticed a couple of the foot ropes look as if they are a little tight.  In fact they hang quite nicely. A little dilute PVA glue does the trick.

The running rigging is now all but complete. Royal back stays are to come.  It's not urgent, and I'm not sure whether I have enough Syren thread for them and some of other things I need to do.  If necessary I will order some more thread, but Christmas/holiday time is not the time to do it.

This is how things look at the moment.

I am now finishing off the main and fore yards (photos later), and while doing that, unfortunately my thoughts have turned to rope coils.  After quite a few experiments, this is the method I have used for the coils for the timber heads.

I have wrapped a piece of balsa in cling wrap (preventing the thread from sticking). Having measured the required length of the coil, I have simply stuck a drawing pin into the balsa at the correct height for the drop. The bit of wood at the top is about the same size as the timberheads and is simply a piece of scrap, sharpened at the bottom and stuck into the balsa.

To enlarge the lower part of the coil, and to prevent the thread from sticking I have put a small (red) piece of electrical insulation over the pin. I would have preferred something a bit thicker to make a larger lower coil, but I guess you can't have everything.

This gives an idea of how they will look on the model.
