petehay got a reaction from tarbrush in Captian Eddy by petehay
Decided to try scratch building the “Captain Eddy” from the plans seen in this topic thread. Got the keel and the bulkheads drawn at 1:48th scale and have started cutting out the pieces from bass wood.

Thanks for the kind words Roger. I’ll continue to take pictures and if things go well, I will put together a build log.

petehay got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Grand Banks dory by Cap'n'Bob - FINISHED - 1:32 - SMALL
Bob,
The Grand Banks Dory was my first scratch build. In fact it is my first completed boat. I just completed it last week.
I used the plans from the Shearwater site but built it half size at 1:24 scale.

I am going to try to attach a photo taken with my iPad - not the best quality but I'm pretty proud of this little guy.

Slight progress - rudder, fish well hatch covers and seat. Now I can fret about the bowsprit.

Now that the weather here in Portland is starting to turn it's time to get back to the model boatyard. Over the rainy weekend I installed the toe rails, trail boards and the upper & lower molding. The stars on the trail boards are little sequins that I picked up at Michaels. I found the moldings to be particularly tedious to get right (and not get glue all over everything).

Inspired and encouraged by Mario, DeeDee and Hexnut I have started my Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack phase 1. Right before MSW went from v1 to v2 I went out and bought this kit along with the Midwest Sakonnet Daysailer. The Daysailer was my first wood boat kit and I learned a lot.
I have since purchased a second Smack kit hence the phase 1/phase 2 reference. Following Mario's build as a primer I am currently building Smack #1 pretty much straight out of the box. I did plank the deck and floor with HO scale 2x10's from Northeastern Scale Lumber Co. and was very pleased with the results. I started the build over the Fourth of July weekend and thought the red, white, and blue color scheme was called for.
I hope to follow this build with a totally bashed version a'la DeeDee but let's get this one built first.
I have attached iPad Picts of where I am now with the build.
Glad to join the Smack club.

The next step is to create the four main ribs by bending and attaching to the numbered forms. The instructions say you can soak the 1/16" strips in water for 15 minutes and they will be pliable enough to make the curve. My attempts at this just ended up with a lot of crimped wood.
I resorted to the Midwest procedure of adding ammonia to the soaking water. I then used tiny clothes pins and medicine bottle caps to form the half circle. This was much better.

When I finally built this I soaked the wood in isopropyl alcohol and taped them to a form. Worked very well, especially on the ribs.

This kit is still staring me in the face. Anyone willing to try to talk me through the instructions if I send the PDF file?

Thanks for the suggestion Wayne.
I contacted Model Expo via email and received a pdf version of the instructions the next day. Great customer service. It's still the same file but I was able to print it in (somewhat) higher quality.
I don't know if the instructions alone are sufficient for my first plank on frame kit - although at only $9.00 I guess it's worth a try.

I picked up one of these little kits in a plastic bag at my LHS. Marketing material reads as follows:
Lifeboat - Plank-on-Frame Construction
by Model Shipways
Lifeboat is built upside-down on a set of formers, just like real boats.
Kits include keel, sternpost, rudder and basswood strips for framing, ribs, and hull planking.
Complete with construction base, plywood parts for building jig and
illustrated instructions.
Well... the illustrated (photocopied) instructions leave a lot to be desired as the images are so dark as to be unreadable.
Has anyone here built one of these little guys? Any advice, hints (better instructions)?
I'm just finishing a scratchbuilt Banks Dory 1:24 scale and this looks right up my alley.
