  1. Great work as always Greg I can't tell if that last picture is a building yard, a scrap yard, or a diorama of a ship wreck on the bottom of the ocean! Honey Mustard Chicken sounds good, almost midnight here though!
  2. You sure know how to make a guy hungry! Breakfast lunch or dinner, doesn't matter if you put on a feed like that!!
  3. I think if I wanted to get needles all I would need to do would be go to some of the hangouts around town and pick up after the street people. They are constantly showing pictures on the news where people are cleaning up parks in the area and coming up with buckets of needles! I may look into it though it looks like it may offer another alternative to glue out of the bottle.
  4. Dave I LOVE that dispenser! Only seems like it is available in Australia though. I do the same thing with the bottles I buy but this seems kike it would work so much easier.
  5. Ken Not quite, just chainmail, Haven't done too much damage lately, even though I have done some doozies in the past and have the scars and pictures to prove it. I was MUCH worse in my knife making days. Not in any great hurry and I do have fun most of the time. I think it may be a subconscious need to appease the hobby Gods with a little blood now and then.
  6. I have so much finesse and coordination that ANYTHING sharp in my vicinity is not only a risk but probably an outright danger to anyone in the area. I use a stretched out safety pin. If it gets stuck I just yank it out with a pair of needle nose pliers and ram it in and out a few times until it is completely free. There seems to be no really good answers for the stuff, as what seems to work when you are using it daily for some parts of a build are a complete failure when you are almost never using it on another area/time of the build. It has always seemed to me that for many modelers CA is a kind of Love/Hate relationship at the best of times.
  7. I think you covered it in your first word, "Whimp" Visor? What visor? Well to be honest one of the other guys on the forum sent me a visor that he wasn't going to use and I got it in the mail on Thursday. Itook a look at it and I suspect you may be right. It does make the stuff look like your pictures. Now I will probably develop a hunched back from having to work so close to the end of the visor where the focal distance seems to be. Have to beg off on joining this build I'm afraid. I am very much a THIS SHIP draws me kind of modeler and right now I am drawn to the Providence. Then I have my promise to keep on the Titanic, (The Admiral has a very long memory when it comes to promises made to her, not so much for promises made to me). For a personal build of this type I always thought the old Revell 1/232 scale Olympia or the Glencoe Oregon would make nice PE models and could be done in a number of color choices depending on the time chosen. Squardron had a nice re-release of the Olympia and still lists it in their catalog, but it is forever on (In stock soon) status. The Oregon is pretty much strictly an eBay item but Gold Metal Models supplies PE for both, and brass gun barrels are available on eBay for the Oregon. Another problem though is that by the time you gather everything needed, the total cost gets pretty high! I will just have to continue hanging out in the belfry and try to learn what I can until my turn comes and I need to open THE BOX! Thanks for the invite though.
  8. You might try rinsing then out with alcohol or even water and making sure they are dry before using them again. I don't really know as I have never done this method before. I mostly just use a needle stuck in the tip to keep the tip open and don't even use the cap after a while. I only buy the small bottles and only buy from my local hobby store as they have a higher turnover and the glue seems to be fresher than when you buy it on line or at hardware stores. Seems to help if you keep it in the refrigerator as well. Still can't really vouch for use on rigging but Mark is MUCH more experienced than I am so might be the better voice to follow on that part.
  9. Carl I have been following all of the plastic builds involving the use of PE, and to be honest you guys are scaring the living daylights out of me. The reason is that a while ago i promised the Admiral that I would/could build her a kind of nightlight version of HER favorite ship, the Titanic. In the process of this foolish talk I explained that it would be lit and encased in a shadow box style case that would also have stars in the sky. I really went on and on never thinking that I should have shut my stupid mouth! At any rate I have now obtained the 1/350th Titanic, almost doubled the cost in PE that in all honesty will probably be lost on her as she will never look at the details of he model. Add the lighting I have picked up to complete the foolish promise made over morning coffee and I have really done myself in. I didn't think too much about the PE as the pictures you guys post look so big and nice. Then I got a look at the real life stuff, !!!!!
  10. OK but I will not hesitate to use the stick I keep close to give you a poke now and then if needed!
  11. OC You are supposed to be an observer not a napper! Looks like there is plenty of seating room available so I will grab something up close so I get a good view and don't miss anything. I don't want to loose my place by leaving to get some pop corn and grog so hopefully some of the late comers will be considerate and bring enough for all of us other more lazy people. Lead on McDuff, (Danny)
  12. I am no expert but I would think that you would want to tie first, and glue second, unless you are using a slow setting glue which CA is not in most cases. If you are trying to tie a stiff line then it will be much harder to get a tight knot. Also, even though I am not sure about where you are, I buy tips that have small tubes that slip over the tip of the bottles I buy and when they become clogged just throw them away. Someone else on the forum stated that they soak their tips in acetone or something like that to keep them clean and clear. Not sure where that post is or if Acetone was the solution used.
  13. Hi Mark Yeah I'm out of town for my anniversary right now. Those guys are probably back at the ship yard undoing everything. Hello Al Nice to see you. As you know I also like the ships from this era, but I am especially fond of the history of the Providence. I hope I will be able to do it justice. It's not as complex or as intricate as your build but I have enjoyed it so far.
  14. I thought that when you installed the bulwarks you cut down on the recommended overlap from 4mm to 2mm making them taller right from the start? If that was the case they should still be at least 1mm taller than the recommended height. ??????
  15. Hi Denis Doing great, this kit is really starting to pop! I think that no matter what the lighting source is inside, you will find that it will look yellow when observed from a distance or outside. If you have a harbor like I do a few blocks away you can go look at the boats at night and see what I mean. Keep it up you seem to be getting close to adding the 'Denis' parts.
  16. No need to worry Carl I'm pretty soft and fluffy...................... Well I guess my wife does prefer the word "FAT"......... I'll try to hit behind you so you can disregard that loud SPLAT sound you hear. NOW the party is officially underway! No Grog for the builders though. We don't want any building while under the influence, (BUI)
  17. Thank you OC I suppose I could have built from the plans available for the Replica Providence built in 1976 but I felt there were too many concessions made for 20th century regulations and desires made after the fact. I wanted to build something a little more period correct if possible, and the AL Independence seemed to fit the bill the closest. The bow goof was of my own doing and could have easily been avoided with a little better forethought. As Piet called it earlier this is a 'concept' build and subject to more interpretation than most people like for a named vessel. But I am stuck with what I have and I REALLY want to build a model that I at least feel can be called Providence.
  18. Thanks for stopping by John and Piet. Right now it is just one kit, the AL Independence, that is making the ultimate sacrifice. All I will be using from other kits and sources will be plans and stuff like that. when I am done with the hull it will be pretty much a scratch build from that point on using the other information.
  19. Welcome to the belfry Ben. What do you mean roof loading jack? There are only three of us batty people up here! Bosun's chair? I knew I forgot something, after I chased away the spiders I just took over the beam. Might make it a little nicer now that there are three of us if I find a swinging bench and hang it on chains. Be back in a few, don't want to miss anything. Stay where you are Carl, we went to a lot of effort to get the good view from up here! Every one else just came in and sat down wherever it looked convenient.
