I have often used window cleaner to do the initial cleaning of my airbrush when using acrylics. You may have an issue with the slight ammonia odor though. I then follow it up with water, sometimes hot, (Out of the faucet, not stove hot) and sometimes cold depending on how lazy I'm feeling. I have very seldom had to use much thinner or cleaning solvent. I have only had to remove the tip to clean inside a couple of times so far but then I really have only used it in my Huey build. Not exactly the heavy use Craig and Greg get out of theirs.

I guess that another page of comments and stuff was hidden when I wrote my comment and it was already too late to be of use to you. I can remove it if you want.

I am no authority, and certainly not a master but I bought one like this

A few years ago, back then it was about half that price and may still be if you shop around, and have found that it has been able to do everything that I was able to do and has always been far superior to rattle can if the model has any detail at all. The little compressor is really quite quiet and would be even more so if you close it up inside a cardboard box, or under a blanket. It only runs when you are pulling the trigger. Many people laugh at these little things but I think they are somewhat underrated.

Here is a video that kind of says the same thing but without taking the compressor part into consideration.

The savings in paint cost and volume used will more than pay for the cost of the airbrush over time,
    Good luck

All the latticework makes this model the poster child for using PE. This could end up being one of your most impressive builds Greg.

    I'm with Ken

The ships of ABDAFLOAT and their misuse by the controlling powers was truly a shame of the time, even though there was probably little else that could have possibly been done in the opening days of WWII. The loss of the Langley was possibly the pinnacle of mismanagement and blundering about the ocean almost aimlessly until she was located and sunk by the enemy for what was already a lost cause.

Looking forward to see what you do with her.

A little more parallel I suppose but other than that looked pretty much the same. I could have repaired it myself, (slowly) but I hired a drywall company and they did a FANTASTIC job. You cannot tell where the new wall and ceiling meets the old. They blended it perfectly! Cost a few more dollars than I would have liked but well worth it.

Looks like the wall and ceiling of my house when the 123 year old plaster fell off a couple of weeks ago leaving just the lath boards exposed!

Your coach is looking looking quite interesting. I never looked all that closely at how they were constructed before.

    Alan,

Where is the spool holder installed on your printer? Did you place it as much as possible to the left top?
Do you have the small brass eyelet guiding the filament into the feeder?
I just cannot explain why the filament would snap like this, coming out of a fresh and new spool.
Unfortunately, this printer does not detect the lack of filament, as other and more sophisticated printers do. I wish they could retrofit this nice and important feature in the Ender-3.

Looks great, what would you say was your best resource in learning how to mask and weather a ship for painting?  I really want to get into weathered hulls.   Most of my building has been wood ship models.

    Thanks In advance

    Thanks Yves,

i think the point -3- is the most important and the showstopper one. For -1- design, it is easy: a rod with 2 globes. For -2- if you print a couple of them  near to each other, like trees in the forest, they will support themselves. But yes, cannot work out the fragile material.
I have no any experience with 3D printing, so have no clue how rigid is the final product.

Well, if you check out my Pamir in the 'At a glance' topic, you'll se mine is mint too. I did weathering on my old models (especially the warships), but since i built the Vasa without weathering for obvious reasons, i fell in love with the clean look.

There seems to be quite a range of I Love kits, Armour as well as Ships and prices for 1/350 ships up at $300. The Hood seems to be an especially good deal.

I thought I’d get a lot of modeling done this summer but I’ve actually gotten little done.  Summer can be busy!

Your Mikasa looks fantastic and your PE work is really impressive.  I have one of the 1/700 kits with Infini detail set.  Seeing all the details on your build, I have a sense of what I’m in for.

I think I said this earlier, but I think the Mikasa is a really beautiful ship.  Your model is looking spectacular.

Apparently so, the conversion apparently cost $300k so I expect that it wasn’t worth it.

There are a number of ways one could tackle the construction sequence of these models. I chose to paint much of it before I assembled it, then touched up where I needed to. It was in the process of assembling after the paint when I smashed mine. You are going about yours in a different way and I am interested to see how you finish it. You are building yours first, then painting afterward. You might avoid some of the destruction I did when assembling mine. I am enjoying your approach to it.

After I got mine in place, I managed to smash one of them...almost flat. There was no hope saving it, just left it "battle damaged". 😄

Thank you so much Craig. Its still fun even if it gets a bit frustrating. I'm guessing you had the same parts to deal with on Scharnhorst? Even with magnifiers threading into that slot and gluing is about at the limit of my eyesight.

Today was spent deep in the world of PE. I made and fitted the bridge wings. With the bending tool it went quite easily.
The brass masts are interesting. Flyhawk doesn't just provide brass rod for the masts. The pieces are turned. The masts taper and there are rings on the yards. The mast is a two part piece just to make life interesting with a tiny locating peg on one piece and a corresponding hole in the other. I used the plastic mast (which is quite nice but doesn't compare to the brass one) t set the locations of the yards.

The rest of the day was spent getting frustrated with these pieces.

They make up small underhanging platforms under the bridge structure. There are four of them. The "Y" shape threads into the slot in the larger piece and forms some of the structure. The main piece is easy to fold but it goes downhill from there. Adding the Y piece was very difficult both to place and glue. I made a lot of repeat attempts and called it a day with only two fitted. My eyes were beginning to cross attempting to position the Y structures. Tomorrow i another opportunity. They can just be seen above the gun mount.

    Thanks for looking in.

Thank you Mike. Very kind comments. Flyhawk almost overdo the PE sometimes. I find myself struggling with parts that probabl;y don't really enhance the model too much. But the challenge makes it interesting.

This morning brought a disappointment. I checked the printer when I got up knowing it would still be running. It was but it wasn't printing anything. The filament had snapped during the night so a potentially good print had to be scrapped. This spool of filament doesn't seem to be as well wound as the last one and i have found the filament feeding from under other coils as I have checked throughout the day. I have been assisting it to try to reduce the drag but its going to have to fend for itself overnight. It still has 15 hours to run to finish hull section #6
