Derek C reacted to woodrat in Ancient shipwrecks found at the bottom of the Black sea
Fantastic! I have been waiting for this. One of the wrecks appears to be an at least 2 masted merchantman from the mediaeval period with stern castle preserved. I need more pics . I have congratulated Prof. Jonathan Adams, the director of the project by email. (But he never acknowledged, standard behaviour for academics, I find)

Thanks for looking in Derek - there were times early in the build when I thought about sinking mine too
Thanks Michael, at least we have the new log lists per boat type at the head of this section to better locate builds (thanks to Danny) and this one won't extend beyond three pages or so.
Cheers Steve, in the home straight now

Today I did the keelson and false keel . The keel is made of red oak the false keel is blood wood, and the keelson is cherry.
i also rough cut the frames , all at once . I will go back and trim them up and sand them down one section at a time starting with 5 and working my way to c . Not for any special reason just the heading I have chosen .
sooooo many pieces lol let the fun begin

Nice progress so far. For a flat glueing surface I went to Lowes and picked up a 12" × 12" black marble tile. It's dead flat and less fragile than glass.

Shipyard was not very productive this week, work got in the way . But I did make a little progress I cut and shaped the keel.
and i cut out the templates for the framing and started gluing them on a piece of 3/16 “x4”x24” red oak .
i will finish gluing them them up today and start cutting them out on the scroll saw . I will wait to start gluing them until I go to the hardware store and pick up a few sheets of glass to ensure the frames are straight .
thanks for looking in

Derek C reacted to Bill Tuttle in Miniature Russian carving tools
Fellow Modelmakers,
I am bringing this subject back to life for two reasons. First of all to thank Druxey for his original post of introduction to Mihail Kirsanov and his fine chisels as well as Vossiwulf for the pictures and review that he posted. Secondly, to let everyone know that these are available again for anyone interested.
After reading the original posts, I contacted Michael and attempted to order a set of these only to find that he was out of town and would not be producing them until October of this year. By some stroke of luck, my feeble mind recalled this information and I contacted him in October and ordered a set. As previously noted by others, the order from Russia was painless, paid with PayPal and received the chisels within 16-20 days of shipping. I do not want to bore you folks with a reiteration of the past posts but these chisels are beautiful and far superior to anything I have seen offered anywhere else. I have seen pictures of his model work and he is also a fine modelmaker as you would expect. As mentioned before, there will be a learning curve on sharpening but Michael provides instructions for this by e-mail.
Druxey has previously offered to provide his contact info if interested and I will do the same by PM. I would also remind you as stated in the previous e-mails that Mihail does not speak English so you will have to use some form of translation software. I found Google to be very easy to use.

Derek C reacted to macfelsing in Also from Colorado
Hello, I've been in a member of this site for some time, but not actively following. I have been building models since I was a kid, and have always been attracted to sailing ships and airplanes. I build mostly plastic but have several wood ship kits in my stash as well. I like the larger scale models and usually get a lot of aftermarket kits for them to add detail and realism.
I have build Revell's Constitution 1:96 scale, the Thermopylae, Heller's Bireme Emperator, Soleil Royal, Royal Louis, Le Chebec.
In wood I have a French fishman and the Constitution cross section in progress (did dumb things like replace the green woodchips that came with the kit with individual copper plates made from copper sheet with scribe bolts. etc.
Currently working on a little Heller 1/400 scale Narvik class destroyer Z-31.
I tend to collect older kits, have most of the Heller Sailing ships, including HMS victory, Soleil Royal, Chebec, Realle de France, and many others. Also have the Constitution, United States, Susquehana, CSS Alabama, and many others in the stash.
More projects to do than I have time, but I enjoy the craft.
Will get around to posting some more pictures of the Chebec, see my profile pic.

Welcome aboard, enjoy the site. Years ago I built the Ertl Chebec, it was an enjoyable build. I'll be interested to see your Chebec.

After reading Moby Dick at twelve in '62 I was also drawn to plastic model ships. What drew me was the standing and running rigging. That each line has a special name was fascinating. I am awaiting the D'Agostini Wasa, billed as the most accurate kit. Who cares if it takes years. When my son returns from Korea on his retirement tour his daughter is a photographer and I'm sure she'll teach me how to take pictures.
