Derek C reacted to federicoaa in Bounty Launch by federicoaa - FINISHED - OcCre - SMALL
    Hi All,

Returning to model ships, I decided to start with a small one.

"Following the mutiny on the Bounty, Captain Bligh, along with 18 loyal members of the crew were cast adrift in the launch, and made a remarkable voyage to the island of Timor, after spending 41 days in the worst possible conditions."

I started with the keel but forgot to take pictures.
Here's one where I'm placing the floor (sorry for the mess in the background, my workplace is tight  )

I use small wood separators to keep all planks even while they set

Next step is to glue the thwarts in place and start planking

    Cheers,
    Federico.

    Hi,

After 4 years out I'm back again.

4 years ago I started my first model, and I learnt something important: I't hard to work without tools

In these years I finished my PhD, got a job, bought an apartment, and got a child.
It took me 4 years to finally be able to get a small workshop, but I'm happy with the results
(It's quite hard to get good tools here in Taiwan)

I recently bought 2 models from Occre: The bounty boat (a small beginner level model) and the cross-section of Santisima Trinidad
I started building the bounty boat a week ago, I think it's time to start a blog entry

    Cheers,
    Federico.

I finished a 18th century longboat for my 1st build and learn a lot. I think a 1st scratch build would be the same 18th century longboat but in a larger scale.

Another minor issue once found attaching the stern decoration is that the opening was too big too completely cover with the metal badge so I added some inside trim (would be hidden anyways)  and once painted with a brass color (different from the white, blue, and red coloration scheme that Mamoli indicated), I glued it down with CA.

Thanks Ian , thanks Mustafa... always a good feeling to get compliments...
And Ian, yes, I have read your Victory log many times, wonderful craftsmanship!

With this post, I also have some progress to report from last weekend...
Notched out the voids for the rudder hinges and pins to sit and I set them with a light coat of CA, priming and painting prior of course .

Here is a piece of the planking that was cut to 1/32 x3/32 , I am surprised how bendable this wood is I was worried that it might be brittle when cut this thin but seems pretty tough

I started to rip a bunch of 1/32 pieces to use as planking for the hull then I will use my exactoknfe to cut them into 3/32 wide strips

Ok so I finished my longboat kit build from model shipways and found it was fun and challenging,so I started looking at other kits to build my second model . Then yesterday by chance I got a bunch of teakwood from a friend and thought to myself what am I going to do with this . Then I figured why not cut it up and build another longboat but this time from scratch using all teakwood. I have never done anything like this before and never worked with teakwood before . But what the heck I figure I'll give it a shot.  I will build it using Model Shipway plans and instructions .

    Doc Hoy:

Its a very good club with a lot of helping hands out there.  I was stuck on a model, but with the suggestions I received I started again to work on it and expect to have the model finished in another week.  Just in time to start another.

One scene that was cut, modified actually, was the scene where they anchored in Brazil.  This was related from one of the SD Maritime docents who was an extra in the film (he played the master at arms).

The anchor for the movie was made of fiberglass.  They came into the harbor with all the native craft escorting them, then dropped anchor....and it floated... CUT!!!!!!  They had to haul it in, add weights to it then do it again.   DOH!

Cloth, paper or plastic?  If cloth, use starch and a mold such as on tin can cut open and shaped for the sail.

Derek C reacted to Moxis in My humble method of making strops for blocks
There has been recently many methods shown to make strops around small blocks. When rigging the guns for my Le Cerf I needed a big number of small 3 mm double blocks. For making strops around these  I made this simple fixture, which fullfilled it`s task quite reasonably.

First a simple construction was made of a piece of scrap wood and 2 mm plywood.  Small pieces of 1 mm and 0,6 mm iron wire were glued into the bottom of the jig, and grooves were sawn with jeweler`s saw into the plywood walls:

Pieces of 0,15 mm thread were put into the first grooves, and blocks were positioned to the jig so that the 0,6 mm wire was put through one hole of the block:

Then small pieces of 0,6 mm rigging thread were placed into the second grooves:

And then it was rotated around the block and then around the 1 mm iron wire:

And now it remained only to make a small knot between the block and the 1 mm loop using the thinner thread, and attach small blops of diluted PVA glue into both ends of the block. After the glue had dried, ends of threads were cut as near as possible of the block.....

    ..... and blocks were ready......

......and used for rigging the guns:
