    Good afternoon fellow modelers

I was getting ready to rig my cannons this morning and once I got a good look at the cannons I made in the beginning of my log one did not match the other so I decided to fix the one the was a bit to large. It wasn’t to bad ,but to me was obvious. Well I ducked it all up and it turned out looking real bad .. Here is what it looked like before I butchered it.

Here is what it looked like after the butchering .

when I made these I used paper and super glue .
I had picked up some brass rod a few months ago and decided today was going to be the day I tried my hand at making a couple cannons out of it to replace my experiment gone wrong.

I started by cutting grooves in the rod with my file to mark the rings of the cannon .

then i I started filling the shape of the end of the barrel.

I do not own a lathe and quickly realizing this was going to be a time consuming project I decided to use my little drill press to speed up the process . I chucked up my piece of brass and using my files started shaping.

After a little time and patience this is what I came up with.

i am pleased with the way the cannon turned out . Now I will try to replicate it . I will post results of the replicated cannon later today .
    i hope  lol

    Thanks for looking in.

    Evening,
    Hope everyone is well.
Been a bit for an update. Not much to show, mostly planking, planking then more planking.
Plus some side projects to keep me busy.

I have 3 planks installed for Belt D, after the third one was installed I started Belt B.
Do a few in belt B then 1 or 2 in Belt D so they meet towards the bottom.

I'll clean up the edges after all planking is done.

    Slowly closing up the hull!
    Slowly......

I started the Cross Trees for the Foremast Top.
Below is the rough cut, they'll be cut to shape after I can seat them easily in the notches.

    Mike,
I took your advice and sanded down the cheeks.
Enough, but not enough to look too thin.

I also started shaping the Sling Bolster and the Port and Starboard Bolsters.
They look a bit thick in the pic but they have been sanded down.
    Nothing glued yet, just tinkering.

I think we've all done this!
Officially the first time Niagara has drew blood. Not bad for this vicinity!

Its good to work in the health care industry. During the course of my day, my pockets are kept stuffed with alcohol pads.
I usually forget to leave them at work, unintentionally of course, and they end up at home.
I have several years supply of these things.
    But do I have 1 Band-aid............nope!

In between slicing my finger, I was working on the Foremast Top.
Concerning the 2 Cross Trees underneath the top, the plans indicate a groove at the end of just the aft cross tree.
    1) Is it just the aft cross tree that has the groove? (that's how I see it)
    2) Does it run vertical to the horizon?

I 'd send a photo but mine is all black and you can't see much. I was drawing a blank with that notch. Doesn't seem to serve much purpose as the crosstrees don't even extend out from under the platform. However a closer look made me think - the aft crosstree runs almost the full width of the platform.  If you have made notches or holes in your platform for the deadeyes and placed those according to the plan, the aft crosstree terminates right at one of the holes on both edges. All I can figure is the notch in the crosstree is to provide clearance for the deadeye wire coming thru the hole.

Pretty pointless really. It doesn't look like I made the notch. Knowing my own laziness, I probably shortened the crosstree enough (just a hair) so that the ends do not interfere with the deadeye.

    My best guess...

Hello members, finally feeling better so I figured I’d post a short update ,

    I have received my book

and found some some very useful info in it , I am glad I purchased this book it is packed full of historical drawings and old photos of the. Logoda , and it’s whale boats. I also started receiving some drawings on the vessel so I will begin figuring them out so I can start making saw dust this weekend. She is going to be a nice size model at aprox 23” long 30” tall and 7 “ wide.

I hope to get started this weekend .Glad you looked in ,

Thank you for your appreciation Christian.
Thank you also to let me know the Marshal paintings. They are marvelous.
Your idea to paint the inside walls red is good, but I will not do it. With the gangways and the brackets in place it would be too difficult to do it. I used HMS Victory as an example, on the Victory The inner bulwarks are in ocher, so I believe that I am not completely wrong in my color choice.

Hope your feeling better. Sounds like you've been doing some research/shopping.

Didn't know you were from New Bedford.
I'm a Worcester MA kid, born and raised.
Only moved to New Hampshire a few years ago for a job. Don't see myself moving back either!

Today I searched around to find a copy of
To Build A Whale Boat: Notes & Model Makers Guide by Eric A.R Ronnberg, Jr.
I found a copy in Texas and it should be here in a week . Amazon had a new copy but wanted $500.00 . Glad I found a nice used copy  for around $20.00

    Hello fellow MSW members

After finishing my Cross section build I wasn't sure what my next project would be . While looking at different boats i started thinking back to when I was young .I was born in New Bedford Massachusetts, and as a kid I can remember visiting the  Whaling Mueseum . https://www.whalingmuseum.org/ and they always had such great stuff on display and in the Bourne building was a massive display of the vessel "Lagoda" . As a kid I couldn't wait to get to the vessel to explore it .My grandmother lived maybe a mile away from the museum so we would go visit several times a year. I contacted a member from the museum and she was very helpful in sending me the information on the Lagoda, and how to purchase the plans for the vessel. So without hesitation i called and purchased them as they only had the one set left .
Now I will impatiently wait for them to arrive. Here is a link to the " Lagoda "if you would like to check her out . https://www.whalingmuseum.org/explore/exhibitions/current/lagoda

Thanks for checking in on my new adventure.

    Ummmmmm,

My Lawyer has advised me to invoke my 5th amendment rights concerning these stealers.....

In all seriousness.....If I'm able to pull off a hull with no stealers.....well......beers and steaks are on me gentlemen!
Gonna assume I'll need a few stealers somewhere.
Ya never know, maybe I can. Doubting it, but, I'll certainly try.
