canoe21 reacted to captainbob in Lettie G Howard by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:48 - POB - schooner
Bedford, I don’t know why I ever doubt the force? It always comes through.
The planking is finished, the keel and the stern post are in place and the rail around the stern is on. There’s a lot of cleanup to do but the parts are there. Next its finish the rail and paint the hull and bulkheads, then the deck goes on.

Building continues at a snails pace here in the ole shipyard. Continuing that gradual work on the ships stove. You may recall when last we visited it looked like this.
The stove itself is a length of 3/8" diameter dowel (works out to about a 12" diameter coal stove).
The flue pipe is made from 3/31" dowel. I decided to replace the metal piece that came with the kit and make it all out of dowel. Still need to finish sand, prime and paint the pipe and add the final angled piece at the top.
You may have noticed the worker - since it gets cold up here the Admiral kindly knitted him a watch cap to ease labor relations a bit.
She also wasn't totally satisfied with the first blanket, so has knitted a new one for the cabin.
These last couple of shots show the soot on the bulkhead and the coal dust from the stove. Will be a small coal bin on the starboard side of the stove (next piece on my list).
Other than a couple of more interior details, I guess my next step is to start framing in the deck itself. For that, will need to practice with the scroll saw so I can cut the 30 bazillion knees I need for the deck beams.

Here are a few photos of my shipyard taken while still adding details. This is a kit from Sierra West Scale Models.
Both the keel and frames are constructed from laminated layers of laser cut chipboard and plywood.
The last photo was taken while the dio was on a contest table at a Fine Scale EXPO last year. The setting sun
showed it in a different light, so to speak.
I took a few more just now that shows the completed diorama. Have to resize and will post if you like.

thanks Lawrence.......as a matter of fact....I got the rest of the lighting stuff yesterday {the admiral said no on the chandelier} the tree boat should be able to make it to the table. there's only a few more things to on the Jingle belle, and then I can primer the deck area.
not much to report at the moment, but I am trying to combine scavenger hunting with Christmas shopping. hope to have some progress soon.
Bob........I bought a set of those ultra LED lights......takes two 1.5v batteries. would I need to use a 3v adapter?

canoe21 reacted to Piet in Hr. Ms. O 19 1938 by Piet - FINISHED - scale 1:50 - submarine of the Royal Navy Netherlands in service 1939 - 1945
Hello all and thanks for your patience.
I have been slowly planking dinghy version 2.0 and it's now all planked but still in a semi rough state. There is a lot of clean-up work yet to be done and perhaps reducing the thickness of the frames somewhat.
I think that version 2.0 came out a lot better then v.1.0! Both sides are now equal in height and the planking looks balanced. I think the effort was worth while, at least I am satisfied now.
After I'm done tweaking it up to where I'm happy with the looks of it then I'll add the helm's man seat, the oars-men seats, oarlocks, rudder and other things. I wont be too finicky with the way the wood looks because I'll be painting it in dark grey.
Well, I don't know about Nils but as far as I can tell my version 1.0 may be the first miniature klinker build boat here
As it turned out the planking was actually 0.5 mm thick and 3 mm wide. I tapered one side to 0.5 mm or less so I could lay the following plank on top of the tapered side of the previous plank. I also used CA gel cement to glue the planks on. I found this to work quite well for me. I cemented the plank first to 3 or 4 center ribs while holding the plank firmly in place with my fingers. For some reason I never got stuck to the boat Then after this was holding good I used a fine pointed toothpick to dab some CA gel to the next ribs so I could guide the plank in the proper position, also holding it tight to the rib. This way I didn't need the clothe pin clamps.
I added a wale and shear cap. After I have removed some more wood from the ribs I'll put the keelson in and a few planks next to it. Hey, the sailors need to have a ceiling / floor / deck for steady footing
Okay, here are a few pixs of the results so far.
The length is 70 mm or 2.75 inches. This is big enough or in this case small enough to fit into it's hold. I still need to make and install the cradle for it inside the hold area below deck.
Cheers.

canoe21 reacted to Alfons in Gloucester Fishing Schooner by Alfons - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - scale 1:48 - first build
Hi Lawrence.
No worries, I am always happy to help you out.
The width of the deck planks are about 2,5 mm, the waterways are varying over the length of the ship, but the size is roughly 4 mm.
As for the deck planks, they came from a sheet of shrived veneer, which I then cut plank by plank. This method produced planks that are almost identical in terms of width. Furthermore, each plank is somewhat chamfered along the edges, which gives a nice look ones painted and sanded (with fine steel wool). As said before, the only thing I regret is that I didn't introduce planking butts.

If one is unsure, best get a specialist to sort things out. And I could not have found anybody better :-)
My I present, Mr William Rivers, Gunner of the Victory since 1790*.
Aged 50 he is already one of the oldest on board and lives since 15 years on the starboard aft end of the lower deck. he told me, that his nice wooden peace-time cabin was replaced by a batten-canvas construction as it facilitates removal during war times. But as he had some materials and documents to keep, he was the only one to get a real door.
The gunroom also was separated by a batten-canvas construction from the lower deck. Also the cabin underneath the weep was done this way, the middle cabins of the gunroom and the two extra cabins in front of it were pure canvas hanging from the beams.
Through Mr River I had als the joy and honor to meet Chaplain Reverend Alexander Scott. In his typical black suit he took me to the so called school table where he held some lesons for the boys and midis.
While Mr Rivers tries to circle around the group, holding his hat in the hand as the max headroom is very poor, this scene is watched attentively by two 2nd Lieutenant of the Marines, Mr Lewis Rotely and Mr Lewis Reeves.
Just some impressions, seen from the gundeck ...
... our fancy group ...
... and Mr River, coming out of his cabin and trying to squeeze his way through.
Cheers, Daniel

canoe21 reacted to Jerry in HALF MOON By Jerry - FINISHED - Corel Scale - 1:50
Good morning, David....
and many thanks for your visit and comments. Yes, I am lucky to have the ability to eavesdrop on a few excellent logs of the Half Moon. Don't forget Anja's contribution, a build log of substantial value. I'm taking nothing for granted with this project as what you say is true. This hull will not be covered with 1600 copper plates as the HMS Victory's hull, I imagine a neat planking job is a must and I am proceeding at a much slower pace than when building Victory. I probably will begin the aforementioned planking in a couple of days or so and am puzzled by the thickness of the strip wood used for the initial covering. Using strips 1.5mm thick is something new for me and my first thoughts are about flexibility. But as you say, others have used the same material with excellent results. I believe one plus in using strip wood this thick is its ability to take a push-pin without splitting. I'll be using my usual method of soaking the material for about 24 hours which usually helps bending it without breaking it. I'm in the process of shaping and adding the deck beams which I expect to finish today, along with the quarterdeck, poopdeck and forecastle. This should bring me to the initial hull planking. A few photos of my progress follows.

canoe21 reacted to Shipyard sid in Royal Caroline 1749 by Shipyard sid - Panart - 1/47 scale
Greetings all
Well the second planking will soon be finished , and it is ok, so the smoothing of the hull should be no problem, but the poor quality planking strips will do the look of the hull no favour at all. What I need to know is should I treat the hull on its completion and if so what should I use. Thanks in advance. DAVID

Not been in the shipyard for the last few days, as i was struck down with a bad case of Man Flu. Tonight I bravely overcome the odds and returned to the yard but I didn't do of work.
I have now fitted the Marines walk, and I'm finalising the cat head assembly before fitting to the hull.
For no other reason than I really wanted to see them in place I decided to precut (slightly longer than needed), the lower mast sections.
The difference to the whole build with the simple task of fitting these masts is amazing.
I will be buying a mini lathe in the new year to help with the tapering of the mast and yard sections.

canoe21 reacted to GuntherMT in Armed Virginia Sloop by GuntherMT - FINISHED - Model Shipways - scale 1:48
Brief early Saturday update. The first group of planking (of 4 planned sections) is complete on both sides, and the 2nd group is started on the port side.
As I was cropping these pictures I realized how much damage I'm managing to inflict on my poor painted cap rails, so I'm going to need to do a lot of repainting when I'm done with all the heavy handling of the hull. In the meantime I'm going to cover the rails with tape to try to prevent further damage, since I'm apparently incapable of doing work on the hull and not beating up the already completed work.
