  1. Today's progress is that I have re read the tutorial on coppering the hull, sealed the lower hull with Sanding Sealer. From all I've been told this is a very important step in assuring the glue on the copper tape sticks to the hull .... and not your fingers. I might try to get a little copper tape on the keel and mark the rivets on the copper. For reference, I'll try to document the coppering process for interested parties, with perhaps more pictures than so far have been available. I have also started some work on the windlass and will probably get it mounted later today. Not sure if I'll work on the coppering until I'm on the road or not. Looks like a few days yet before the RV is repaired, so I might be able to sneak in some work on it.
  2. Hi Dave, so far it's been a strike out. Let me know if you find something also. I'm trying to get a nice piece of natural Mesquite from a lumber mill close by. He keeps telling me he has what I need in his kiln, however, it never seems to be dried yet. Don't think I'm going to get it before I leave though. So this will be next year's project. I still have a little bit of touch up to do to it....like maybe an hours worth of time, but I keep putting it off. Will probably get to it when, during or around the same time I mount it to something. Rectangular bases don't interest me much either, but I might have to resort to that. 11-5-14 There is a page dedicated to this build as well as photographs from the real ship on the Gallery pages of my website as well as my current build and other model ship building related information. Please visit. http://www.charleswmorganmodel.com
  3. Hi Radman, I agree the included mounts really look and are cheap. I would like to use dolphin pedestals, but the ones I've seen are expensive. I haven't seen creative commercial pedestals for model ships. They are mostly the standard brass or wooden ones, and to me they don't do much for showing off the ships. So I'm still looking.
  4. Hello Edwin, welcome aboard. Congrats on acquiring the Morgan. It's fun to build. Hope you'll start a build log. I highly recommend and encourage you to do so.
  5. Hi Dave, yes, I wish I could have been there yesterday. If my RV would have come in as scheduled I wuld have been. Looks like another delay today, as when I went to pick it up there was interior damage caused by the dealer, that now has to be repaired. They left the dinette table down when they closed the slide out, and it damaged the stove, kitchen counter and 2 drawers as well as the table top itself. Another delay of 3-10 days. I think I might be snakebit on this thing, or maybe we're not even supposed to be taking this trip, I don't have a clue, and the Admiral, bless her heart is getting upset with all the lies, and delays. Oh well, maybe someday we can hit the road. This ordeal started the end of April.
  6. That will really make an interesting effect. Lot's of labor.
  7. I think the first thing I'll start working on at this stage is to get the coppering done while in the camp grounds.
  8. Thank you Sjors, this is very true....any progress small or large is progress. Well, my posts might start getting to be fewer now, or at least slow down on building as my RV is in and I pick it up in a few hours. I'll bring it home, get loaded up and trying to leave by Wednesday or Thursday. Lot's of "honey-do's" now. Getting time to put the spiders on furlough for a bit. Actually, I think sequester might be the word....
  9. Thank you my friend, I'm happy you are smiling, I am too, bend an elbow to the "old salts of the sea"......
  10. For anyone interested, attached is a video of the re-launching of the Morgan today 21 July 13. This marked the 172 anniversary (I think that is right, I'll verify and edit if necessary) or the original launch of the ship. This has so far been a 5 year restoration process. It was re-christened by the great, great, great granddaughter of Charles W. Morgan. The ship will sail again in the late spring of 2014. This was cool to watch, and I'm sorry I missed it, as I won't be there for a couple of weeks. It's surreal to watch something like this, where one is building a scale model of history, yet can observe this in real time today. Amazing. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130721/NEWS/130719924/-1/archive This should be interesting for anyone who has an interest in this ship.
  11. Not a lot of progress so far today. Preparing to plank the anchor deck, so, I installed the eyes, bullseyes and actually ran my first rigging......this being the Mainstay lines, which attach to the bullseyes and go through holes in the anchor deck then up and around the mainmast. That was interesting, actually quite different than with plastic because of the strength of everything...not fragile yet. Then after finding some nice chain to use for the anchor chains (the kit chains were way too small, I cut and fixed the chains in their proper places, through the anchor deck and out for the anchors to attach to later on. The chains will wrap around the windlass 3 times, then lay on the deck back to the anchor chain pipes located just aft of the Mainmast and not yet installed. They will then go in the holes made in the pipes to below decks, probably into a chain locker.
  12. yes, keep us informed on your case and procedures.......
  13. Thanks Augie, I'll go check it out. I want to be sure and do this right. So then, you just used the self adhesion?
  14. David, I have both so I would be prepared. I use CA quite regularly, so I also like it, however I have never plated a hull with copper. The plans call for 7/32" x 3/4" plates. I assume it's the correct size, however I read a comment somewhere else on a ship of 1/64 scale, that the strips were too big. So I guess this is open for interpretation. Any suggestions would be welcome.
  15. Augie, that has been my primary thoughts on this method. I haven't looked back, but did you take pictures as you did this? Also, what did you use to adhere them to the hull?
  16. Hi David, I'm thinking I will use tape, but cut it into small plates and put some rivets in it. I plan to experiment a little and see what I like best. The tape would probably be easier, but the plates will look better if I can keep them straight. I need to read the tutorials on it.
  17. Hi Wayne, thanks for the comments. I realized that the hunt came from Mark Taylor, and in a previous post I've apologized to both of you. Both of you posted something almost back to back, and I picked up the wrong name. Getting old! lol
  18. I've painted the white trim on the hull s well as painted over the gray on the waterways with a brownish mixture. I think it looks like weathered wood which is the affect I'm looking for.
  19. OOPS, my apologies to Mark and Wayne, when referring to the search for stars in the military ribbons. I absent mindedly messed up who referred me. It was Mark Taylor. Sorry for the screw up guys, and thank you both for your help, I think they worked out perfectly.
