Hello Guys, I am happy to be back in the shipyards again.  I know many of you have missed me, and I greatly appreciate that.  In the jest of this Forum, I please ask you to refrain from the "welcome backs"  and the yada yada that could go with it.  I know many of you know what I'm talking about.  I will be posting photo's shortly of the progress that has been made during my absence from the yard.  Please PM or email me at: email address removed by moderator to prevent spamming should any one need to discuss something out of the build logs, since we are trying to keep the build logs primarily  ship related.  Let's liven this place up some and get to posting update pictures and discussions and quit looking over our shoulders--- we Are among friends here. We should police ourselves if you know what I mean.  More to come a little later, now let's start livening this "morgue" up again and keep up the good work all of you are doing......

The problem with the skylight is corrected.  The Deck House & Berth are also finished.  Both are attached to the ship now, and it is time to move on.  I'll leave my comments or descriptions at that.

Well, it looks like there will probably be a delay in progress for the Skylight.  I was moving along finally after figuring out a few things, only realizing after setting it on the deck that it was quite a bit Too Big.  It kind of grew as I was building it, and it is way out of scale.  This means I'm going t have to scrap a week's worth of work and start over.  I would check it periodically for size, and thought it would be ok, but then when I got it to where I am now, I realized it's a lost cause.  So, after many bad words (sailor's do that you know) I have come to the conclusion that it is too big to use.  Part of the problem is figuring out the proper size of wood that should be used.  The basswood won't allow me to drill holes for the brass bars to go into without splitting or breaking.  I think I might need to consult with Jeff at Hobbymill for some replacement wood before I waste a lot of time and frustration.  So, it is now time for me to ask from the forum, a suggestion on type of wood I should use for this.  Also, about how long it takes to get a shipment from him.  It sounds like he ships pretty fast, and I assume he makes some very small scale wood strips.  Any and all advice is appreciated.  Meanwhile, once I get my composure back, I'll work on the rest of the hatches and another deck house farther forward.   Here are a couple of pictures to show my delema......

I don't think you have much to worry about........with the planking you have left to do.   just limit how many times you glue your fingers to the planks,  and you'll be OK

Larry- unfortunately I'm still waiting for my revised start date...  per the original offer, my first day would have been TODAY...  but everyone's anxious- me, gf, family, neighbors, and future employers (as well as MSW shipmates)...  just waiting for the gov to do its thing (super slow bc of the shutdown and major backlog)...

Hrm, I like the idea of checking to see if the hobby shop has the correct size of wood for the bowsprit- I think I may have to stock up too.  (Yeah, don't know what it is about the bowsprit, whether it's the shape, dimensions, small details, or what, but that thing is scary for some weird reason!)  Perhaps it's something I can whittle on in my room in the evenings once I actually start work.

And don't worry about DNA being a part of the build- if a CSI ever needs proof, all they have to do is take a cotton swab to any ship build.  (Heck, the plastic ones from my childhood still have full fingerprints in the glue!!!)

Mmm- Scotch and a cigar... that sounds good, but for now I'll settle for a Miller Lite~~

Those planking lines are really looking great- you'll probably finish before Christmas.

Hi guys, since I am new at this I hope that it has been set up properly, and I don't get Capn's Mast before I get started. I'll be trying to post some pictures later today as I get started. This will be a slow progress as I am in no hurry, I am also completing a Revell Constitution, I'm retired - and I do have a life besides model ship building...cooking and good cold beer do come first...life does have priorities you know. I'm not sure if shipbuilding causes me to drink my beer or drinking beer causes me to build ships....that one is still being investigated, but so far no results...gotta have my Grog....not much of a Rum drinker, so daily Rations won't help much, however a good Malt Whiskey never hurt....

Anyway, back to ships. This kit has been of interest for many years, and I now have the opportunity to do my first wood ship. I have scratch built models of oilfield production equipment from wood and have enjoyed doing that for many years, so the wood, being intimidating but not overwhelming should be fun - but slow, so bear with me guys, and I'll try to keep current.

Let the voyage begin....Bon Voyage and if I can get the pictures downloaded, I should be posting them soon....

Hello interested individuals, an update for this build log is that as of 10-10-2014 I have transferred my interest in building this log to my own website. If you are interested in following this please click on the link below to go to the website. There are quite a few pages of pictures in this log (MSW)that are missing due to a glitch that occurred earlier in the year. Therefore, I have committed my time to my own log, which has a lot of information for building this model in it. Sorry for any inconvenience, however, I think you'll like it better than this log. My site has a complete Build Log in it up to the point that I currently am at in the build. MSW is a wonderful site, and one can learn much from it. Please follow your friends and their logs here it will be rewarding.

Today was rather productive tackling detail work.  I made and installed the "teeth" a k a net / cable cutter on the bow antenna attaching brace.
Then moved a little further aft and cemented the torpedo loading dolly tracks to the forward deck.
As the cement ( 5 minute epoxy) was curing I started to make the dive plane guards.  I made them from 1.5 mm brass rod, bend them in shape, drilled holes in the appropriate places in the hull and epoxy cemented them in.  I used the O 21 model drawings and several photos for the location.  The lower one needs to stay clear of the side anchor.  As you can see I have marked the location.  I think that they made the anchor closing door hydraulically operative.  I may want to simulate it open with the anchor showing or lowered to the display board.  Hmmmm, that would look rather nice    Tomorrow everything will be soldered and net / cable cutter teeth made and soldered on to the guard leading edges..
Not much to show for a day's work but it's all very time consuming.

Okay, here are a few pics for all yuns to look at.  We don't want to disappoint Sjors now, do we?

Here the net /cable cutter teeth have been soldered to the antenna brace.  It's still raw and needs to be dressed yet.  The small vertical rod is the bow flag post.  It sticks into a small brass tube cemented into the deck.

I have used sewing pins to secure the track in position ready to be cemented on with 5 minute epoxy.

Here the track is being cemented an I am using a bunch of rivet bucking bars to hold to down to the deck.  All my sheet metal tools still come in handy

I found that I could cement two tracks at the same time after I "pinned" them in the right place.  Mixing small batches of epoxy began to annoy me

All four tracks are now cemented to the deck and neatly cleaned up.  I'm happy.

The trim plane guards are cemented in with 5 minute epoxy and waiting to cure.

This shows all the detail work I did today from above the bow.

This is a head-on bow shot with today's work.

I made an annotated copy of what was done today.  I still need to make more teeth and solder everything together.  I also need to make hydrodynamic fairings around the forward parts against the hull.  I'll make them from basswood and cement them on with epoxy.

I couldn't resist putting a couple of the 10 mm brass (torpedo) tubes in the launching area to show their future home

    Cheers,

From my assessment, it is about 1/4" too wide, and about 3/8" too tall.  The scale size of the framing is also too bulky looking.  Most of it is 1/16" ( 1.65 mm) square frames, with 3/64" x 3/32" (2.45 x 1.10 mm) side planking, and the corner posts are 7/64" x 7/64" (2.50 mm).  The piece I tried to use first was .1" x .24" (2.45 x .6 mm) for the side planking and was too flimsy to work with without splitting and breaking. I'm calling it side planking, but in cabinetry it is known as styles.  It is a quite large piece of furniture as you can tell from the real ship photo's.
