Scoot got a reaction from Jorge Hedges in New Bedford Whaleboat by Senior ole salt - FINISHED - Model Shipways
Sos. My thought is that there certainly be seat wear on the thwarts, and foot wear and tool and rope wear etc.. On my whaleboat the goal was to make it appear that the whaleboat had survived a four year stint on a whaleship. Tried to put myself in place of the boatsmen plying their trade. Fun trying to decide the different traits of the different sailors on the different oars. Attached is a pic of a loggerhead, notched to perhaps count the whales captured on this whaleboat. Pic of a authentic whaleboat in the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Enjoy.

Ok, just kidding not finished without the flags.
Here the are...
Color Cpoier/Printers are great aren’t they?
Cant hang flags without Halliards.
48 star US flag for 1941...
The J & W.R. Wing Co. Flag, mounted to the Main Mast Flag Halliard.
And of course the Mystic ceremonial flag.
OK! Now she is finished.
I think so, we will see... 🤔

Mike. It will be interesting building the Morgan side by side. By the looks of your other impressive builds you will be leaving me in the dust.
Enjoy.

Thank you guys for the thumbs up. I do appreciate them. Here are a couple of shots of the davit fall, block, hook & pigtail. The pigtail is used to quickly yank out the hook once it is loose.
Although a fairly small assembly it includes a block with pulleys and shank, a hook, thimble, modified short splice, eye splice, stopper knot and home made rope. A visit to the optometrist is already scheduled!
Thanks again for your support.

Thank you PJG. I can see that a lot of the aesthetic decisions that I have been putting off are catching up with me. i.e as you mention the presentation choices.
Re: The boat lantern.
This small part was a real learning experience for me. Although it will be almost, if not, invisible, I needed to learn more about fine work with sheet metal, soldering, etc. So after three version of the lantern... very crooked, crooked and almost straight... I did get a satisfactory boat lantern finished. It even has a wick just to up the parts count.
The frame is made from 2 small pieces of 1/4" square brass tubing supported by 4 brass pins. The pin heads are ground down to emulate the sample in the plans.
The cage wire is .014" copper soldered horizontally on 3 sides to the brass pins and vertically to holes in the brass stock.
It took the longest time to make an acceptable door. Center punching at that scale was troublesome.
The solder joints are on the back side of the door to minimize removing the excess solder.
I choose to make it an oil lantern rather than the candle version in the plans.
By now, I can't wait to get back to wood and sawdust.

Soaked up the stem and stern post lumber overnight and placed it on the mold to dry.
I think I’ll go work on the Morgan for a while and let this dry up.

Nice job on the build. Coppering looks good. Here is a pic of a section of coppered planking from Mystic Seaport.
Not sure if it is from a real vessel or made as a display.

It is quite tricky to get a nice flow in the compound curves at the stern. I tried to let the copper tiles tell me where they wanted to flow naturally. The real challenge will be to duplicate the pattern on the port side. Good thing one will only be able to one side at a time. If it doesn’t match exactly I doubt anyone would notice. Also, the instructions state that the actual pattern for the copper is unknown. So...who’s to say I am wrong?
it is actually much smoother in reality than the weird reflections would imply.

I am making progress. I estimate that I have put about 20 to 30 hours into the coppering over 10 days.
And a recommendation for peace and quiet in a natural setting. You can’t do much better than Fanning Springs State Park, 10 miles north of Chiefland, Florida. Their cabins are fantastic; two bedrooms, full kitchen, big lounging area, a gas fireplace and a screened porch on 2 sides.

Deck is finished and oiled. I think I will sand it lightly and do a second coat. Also got the first coat of black on the hull.

I have finally finished the New Bedford Whaleboat. In line with the pictures in my last post, I have mounted my whaleboat on a whale 🐋 The picture of whalers in a whaleboat on a whale with sail tucked away was excellent inspiration for my final display.
Thanks for looking and for all your comments. This has been a fun build and one which added more to my skill and confidence bag. My next project will be Model Shipways Gatling Gun.

I have the stern fairly well in hand now except the knife. The rudder is painted and the Tiller is fastened. The Tricing line (lower stopper knot on rudder) runs up port side through a Fairlead in Cuddy to port cleat. The Trip line (upper stopper knot on rudder) runs up starboard side through a Fairlead in Cuddy to starboard cleat. The Tricing line hoists and holds the rudder when the Whaleboat is hoisted on the mothership. The Trip line is used to light the rudder off the Gudgeons. The final line completed was the Steering Oar Strop. It has a stopping knot in the stern post, then runs to the Steering Oar Brace on the port side, back through the stern post and attaches to the cleat on the Lions Tongue with a Lanyard.

Only worked on the NBW for a few hours and have partially finished the oars and paddles. I decided to carve the complete pieces from 1/8” basswood sheet instead of using the provided precut parts. This should make for a better look after staining.
In the photo, the oars are pretty much done. Four more paddles need to be cut out before the final shaping of all six.

I think I have the hull smooth enough for the coppering. It may need a tad more in the painted areas. I will need to prime it to see how it looks. Started fashioning the “fashion piece” on the stern, hence the strip wood sticking up.

Been doing a lot of work around the house getting ready for winter so the NBW has been on the back burner for a while. With the holidays coming up posts will be few for a while but I will work on the boat as I get a chance. I did get the hull painted though. Next I will be trying to do various detailing of the inboard side.

Had the paint decision on my Whaleboat also. Decided to leave one side natural and paint the other. that way it could be displayed two ways.
Fun model to build. Yours is coming along nicely. Enjoy.

Scoot reacted to David Lester in Charles W. Morgan by David Lester - Model Shipways - 1/64th scale - FINISHED
Good Morning All,
Well, I have officially finished my Charles W. Morgan. (I would like to say that it's "done and dusted", but I know from experience that the dusting part has only just started.)
Since my last post, the remaining undone bits were the rope coils for the belaying pins, the anchors, the cutting stage and the boats. I didn't post any updates as I was working through these, as they were very simple and straightforward. They didn't pose any problems, and there were no great insights that would benefit anyone from my sharing.
Here are a couple of pictures showing the finished model -
I think I've mentioned it before but it bears repeating how much I enjoyed this model. I think this has to be one of Model Shipways best kits. The plans are excellent with every detail very clearly covered, and the kit is well designed. While it's challenging, at no point do you find yourself fighting with the kit to get a decent result, which is not always the case. If you're looking for a break from naval vessels, this is a great option.
I'm looking for a smaller project next time around and have purchased the Pride of Baltimore II which I'll be starting soon. Those clippers were very beautiful ships and I won't have to build an additional to the house to accommodate the model.
Many thanks for your comments and "likes."
David
