  1. Welcome aboard!
  2. Thanks! Not nearly as pretty as it could be but what a great learning tool! It has definitely added to my education and learning skills. Now I don't feel so lost or confused when it comes to hull planking.
  3. Thanks Chuck! Absolutely beautiful workmanship on your models.
  4. In a few weeks I will begin my first scratch build of Hemingway's Pilar. While the hull will be painted, I really don't want to use basswood for the hull planking due to it being so soft and it's inability to hold crisp, sharp edges. And there's the "fuzzy" texture as well. I certainly won't be using boxwood. I was wondering about Alaskan Yellow Cedar. I see it's harder than basswood but softer than boxwood. I was wondering if anyone has experience with yellow cedar as to it's bending ability, both steam and edge, and if it cuts easily for spiling. Any advice would be most welcome. Dave
  5. Been awhile since I last posted an update but I have been moving along. Planking is complete except for the second wale and the rails. Of course staining / panting will be the final step. How well did it go? Not as professional as I would have liked but the kit did serve the purpose of teaching me the correct way to plank a hull and what spiling is all about. Only practice will improve the newly learned skill. I will post when again the model is completely finished.

  9. The Malco website is still up and running as of today. Wonder if Malco will remain Malco under Martindale as a seperate company?
  10. I see Malco has 4" , 110 tpi, .040 circular saw blades for about $30. Catch is the minimum order is $100. I was wondering if anyone else is interested. I need 2 of these and looking for anyone else interested in ordering another 1 or two. I will order and ship to anyone interested. Payment can be made through Venmo.
  11. I'm thinking cherry at this point. I've used it for some parts of my Bluenose and found it easy to work with and easy to obtain. Should stain nicely to imitate mahogany.
  12. Thanks for the education. I should have said frames instead of bulkhead. While these won't be visible, I would like like to build as historicly accurately as possible. The frames on the original would be oak with mahogany planked hull. Is it even possible to use these types of wood? Or am I way off here?
  13. Will be starting my first scratch build of Hemingway's Pilar 1/18 scale. Trying to decide if I should make the bulkheads (13 of them) from ply or solid wood. Any advice would be much appreciated. Dave
