Thanks for your support. It's definitely a difficult choice. I don't need to rush it though. Have plenty of work on my other kits to do and Granado is last on my priority list. The choice of wood is not just about this kit. IMHO I think all my 1:64 kits should in the end be consistent but at the same time show some variation so they look good when displaying them together if u understand what I mean. Does that make sense?

HMS Victory by Vane - Corel - Scale 1:98
Vane replied to Vane's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1751 - 1800
And here are some newer photos of the kit taken with a proper camera… its the first time I am doing ratlines so its far from perfect. And also I decided not to put any nettings on her. I just think this scale is too small for some of the details. -
Impressive, she looks really great and that stand is really the iceing of the cake. I have just finished the first planking on my kit and about to do the 2nd. But I am struggeling on deciding what wood to use. What have u used here and do you have any recommendations?

Before Brexit, I am doing a larger order from my UK supplier. I am ordering my favourite kit (even though it will take a long time before i can take it on) and larger amount of wood i think i need for the future. So it is time to decide on the second planking (where only the whale will be painted black). Unfortunately, I dont like the look from walnut on this kit. As I understand, the Ferrari of woods, Boxwood, would be best but it seems to be impossible to find a supplier in Europe that ships 1×4mm strips? So what are my options then? I want something brighter than walnut and pleasant to work with. At the moment, Tanganyika is what i found to be the next best thing to boxwood. Easy to get also. Any other suggestions from you?

Considering Brexit, I am going to place a larger order at my supplier in UK. You never know when it will be possible to trade easily with UK again so I am even adding my favourite Caldercraft kit to it as well... even though i wont start building it in a long time. So one of the thing i need to add to my order is wood. So my first question is if I should go with maple instead of tanganyika for the decks? And what sizes should I then order?

Another stupid mistake.... instead of adding planks in full length i decided to put smaller pieces of walnut between the gunports to avoid some carving and drilling. It didnt come out well so i only did it on one side. The planks didnt end up straight and there are some minor gaps. Hopefully this can be filled out before sanding.

HMS Victory by Vane - Corel - Scale 1:98
Vane replied to Vane's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1751 - 1800
Thanks 🙂 Well, considering I build this mostly 20yrs ago and its my first, I am quite happy so far but its far from other builds on this site. Back then it was also difficult to get info and help since Internet had merely started. I remember ordering numerous of books from UK and here are the ones that help me out abit. I have started with the rigging and its both fashinating and scary. This is definitely not the right model to start with, so i am doing HMS Snake in parallel. Not sure which one that will come first to the finishing line.... -

I will soon post more photos on how the ship looks today, but first I revisited some of my old archives and found some photos that must be more than 15 yrs old probably shot with my first digital camera ever so the quality is really bad. Unfortuntaly, I didnt find anything from the start of the build. Maybe I have some old traditional analog photographs hidden somewhere… Here we go: -
Current builds: HMS Victory (Corel 1:98), HMS Snake (Caldercraft 1:64), HMBV Granado (Caldercraft 1:64)

Bellona looks incredible by the way. Is there any thread here showing more of her?
-
Agree, those colours looks way better!
-
Tanganyika? It would be interesting to see how that looks in practice. Anyone got a photo of a model will that Wood as 2nd planking?
-
Just out of curiosity and maybe you dont want to answer (fully understandable if so): 1) Why did Caldercraft not go with a 1:64 as the rest of the Nelson Navy series? 2) Why did Caldercraft simply stop designing New kits?
-
But almost all model kits seem to come with 2nd planking in walnut. Sometimes kits are marketed in Another Wood than actually provided in the kit which i think is wrong. Many suggest to use boxwood but that is damn difficult to get in hold of.

What is the difference between these two kits from Amati/Victory models? As I understand, Fly and Pegasus were sisterships and are very similar?
