Here I'm using my sticky tape to hold the ship's heads while I work on them. I also used it to hold the capstan parts tht had to be held vertically in a star shaped pattern. That was an impossible task until I thought of the tape.

By the way, Constructo's plans do not include installing the heads in the bow area. However, when you gotta go....you gotta go! The ship need  some heads.

    Sam,

Isn't it natural to prolong the building time with 'sub projects' when confronted with (scarry) items like masts. rigging ...   I suppose taht currently I seem to be carrying that record

The second planking is done.........under the lower wale

I'm using push pins to hold the planks in the way.
I have make first the second planking and then right away I place the lower wale.
Now I can push the pins into the second planking and I don't have to use filler because the holes are covered.
And to now for sure where the wales are I paint them the first time with a primer.
I can now go further with the planky the plank and don't have to worry if I damaged the wale and paint it again and again.

Vivian, nice work as always, great to see you building and posting again.
You can never have too much light at your work station. I have two 250 watt CFL on my bench plus the light on my visor as well as 4 50 watt bulbs in the ceiling light and sometimes I feel I need more.

    Some more pics

Last week I´ve got myself entangled with my ship´s windlasses. On AL instructions there are 6 of them and so, I began to cut, sand and drill the small pieces of wood.

After lots of it, I realised AL didn´t send all the wood I needed - frustration! Got some time sorting it out till finally decided to use another type of wood from my scrapbox (this one, some brazilian wood - still have to know what type it is):

As the first attempt was a fumble, thought some testing would be great and read carefully about what the windlass should look. AL gave me some metal for bars, first I painted them black, to a poor result - after scanning lots of immages I found that metal wasn´t common for that purpose and so, made some bars from toothpicks:

Following, the barless windlass, and then, the ready one - already varnished (still shining):

Next entry I´ll bring the boxes and containers I´ll keep on junk´s compartment.

(After reading my own post and seeing my pictures, a thought comes to mind - I really do need more light for my workbench)

Woo Hoo! Assignment is done and now back to building.

I discovered the other day my rear trucks are 0.020" oversized. Insert appropriately colorful Longshoreman vocabulary here. I almost said I will live with it but they are very close to the same size as the front trucks. I didnt want to make all new parts since I am getting low on Manzonia but didnt feel I would be able to cut them down cleanly by hand. What to do. What to do. Back to the wood lathe and make a new cutting tool........ I used the back side of the front cutter and now all I need to do is reverse the tool. With 1:51 being such on odd scale I most likely will never use this tool again but its there if I need it. I might work for 1:48.

Then I needed a way to hold the truck firmly and centered to the tool.

A couple of weeks ago I tried to make an arbor to spin the truck and cut a small chamfer on the edges. That failed when I discovered the #2 screws were the same size as the axels. I salvaged that and turned my trucks down. Some broke, more have an imprint os the hex head, but many of them are usable. I may still have to cut some new parts, but I wont have to replace all of them.

Sorry for the blown out back grounds on some of the pictures, I was shooting against a concrete driveway and was too lazy to set up a backdrop for this.

    Making a new cutting tool

    The finished tool

An arbor to hold the over sized trucks

    In use

The result. Based on the drawings here at MSW, the new and improved trucks are 0.005" undersized, I can live with that.

Now to figure out a jig to make the bolts that hold the trucks together. Not sure if I can pull this one off since I dont have an indexing head. I have lots of scrap trucks to play with though.

    Thats it for now,

It's worth it when you find the one piece you need. I always have to remind my Admiral when I find that exact piece on how valuable my junk piles are. It's my Admiral's junk, but my stuff!

    Rich,
First the wheel looks great. Dont you love/hate it when somebody can make something look so simple like color match?

As far as the hoarding, I think there is a bit of that in every modeler. You (and probably every builder here) would have loved the bone yard we just cleared out a few months ago at work. 75'x250' of Treasures-In-Waiting. Metals and plastics, foams of all densities, electric gear motors, pumps, generators. You name it, we probably had it back there or could have modified something into what you were looking for. It was a hoarders dream.

Augie and I have been swapping tall tales about scrap piles we managed to collect. I decided to look deeply into this hoarder's delight.

First, I have a tube on my workbench that holds current or recently used pieces. Second, when I don't think I'll have an immediate need for some of it, it goes into my primary scrap pile in the front of my supply closet. After that, any  good stuff goes into my secondary scrap pile a little deeper in my storage closet, then after that, I have a complete junk pile that I keep just in case all the other scrap piles fail me. I also have all the cut out forms for shaping and bending wood. Last resort is my lumber scrap pile in my garage. I guess I am an addicted hoarder. You never know when one of those scrap piles will yield a trophy!

Well thanks everyone, really this site is the best, thanks everyone for your feedback, I think I have achieved the impossible and managed my bends with the Manzonia strips. I finally bent them dry with the plank bender (crimp type) and a lot of patience.

    Very nicely done!
Right now my scrap box is a small tupperware container that also double as a clamp rack. I have managed to keep my scraps small by forcing myself to go through it before I cut into fresh material. Its growing though as I make far more mistakes than successes.....

I put a lifeline on the last stair in case it slips out of my tweezer like the last one did. Now that I have a line tied to it, I shall fit and glue it.
