Engine stands are set in, but not glued at the time. Before glueing all the parts I must make some smaller changes to the engine timbers, not too much, but a bit of milling or grinding will be needed to fit the brass parts to the timbers. Just waiting for the photos from johnhowards associate to build all the parts in scale, or as close as possible. Then a bit of turning/milling/soldering/cutting...... will take place!

Regards, and thank you all for watching

on the other table,  I tested a few thing out on 'ole Thermie.   my recent scavenger hunt was fruitful,  although I failed to get the smaller size chain that I wanted.  I bought some......but it is the same size as the other spool I had bought some time ago.   I still have what looks like roughly 18 inches of that copper chain......I might have enough there.   I may even have some bits and short pieces in my inventory......I'll try and make do.

I was interested in the cannons I scoffed from the Jolly Rogers.   I gave them some sort of paint job.......could have gone with a brownish color for the carriages,  but I went with a red.   I only had gloss though.......I'll hit them with the flat lacquer and kill the shine.

the scavenger hunt also added two sizes of black beading thread to my inventory......I like this thread for the low fizzy quality and being prestretched.   the sheets are a sort of sticker.....I do not intend on using the trail boards and the stern decoration.   for the name,  I have a suitable printed nameplate,  that is much thinner....I just need to create the decorations along the sides.  it is my hope that the 'stickers' can be cut and trimmed to do the job.

the order I had place came in too......the two additional packs of belaying pins,  the pack of double blocks,  and the two boats.  they are clinker planked,  but seem to be missing the thwarts or parts for the interior....bother!

here.....the fife rails need to be made shorter.......

blurry picture.......but these stanchion racks need to be fitted still.  I may even have to make another one here and there,  due to poor fit.....still need to figure this out.

I've opted to make a pair of anchors.... we'll see how that goes.   the cannons were hit with a coat of flat lacquer.........great!   they didn't melt!    dry fitted on the deck........I think they will do quite nicely.   they can be put anywhere on the aft deck and lashed down.  still thinking what else can be added.

    more soon

to muse,  or not to muse..........awwww..heck with it.......let's muse     I mentioned in a few of my logs,  stuff that I had been play'in with.....put it down,  and now can't seem to find.   I had made a couple extra conveyors,  an engine block destined to become a Hemi engine,  a pair of wings {I still won't say what they are for}....and the roof to this blasted model!   I looked everywhere for them....I have a special plastic bag that I keep all these partially assembled parts in....nope!   the bottom compartment of my junk bin.....nada!   in any of the project boxes I may have opened  in the recent past, not a chance.   I decided to take Patrick'e suggestion he mentioned earlier......I haven't done a progress report on the Boulogne Etaples and her offspring in quite a while.......a year,  I suppose.  some have seen it already......thank you very much for look'in in.......other who haven't,  but wish to,  it's in the Boulogne build log.   I could have put it in the Holiday Harbor log,  but since I missed Mother's day,  I figured it fitting to post it with the Mother ship {if I'm not careful, the mother ship will come for me too}.   assembling all the ships for the shoot.......I found all my parts!......nestled on one of the decks of the covered hulls......which one eludes me {immaterial}....the fact remains that I am reunited with my trove!

now that the mystery is solved....I can put them somewhere else....and create another mystery!       not pictured here though......is the roof I made for the Syborn..........that's because,  I broke it!         since I made the second one,  I used that one instead......I broke the original one while fitting the brow.    the brow was made with some flexible cast off wood from the junk bin.   the sides are merely short pieces of planking.

I wasn't sure how low the brow should be.   I may lessen it......it's in the planing phase still

from here.......my musings took me elsewhere.   I decided to visit 'ole Thermie.

About 60% of the deck fittings ready for the primer coat. It's amazing how all the detail gets away from you. Not included  (nor started), lots and lots of guns and vents, 3 stacks, davits, stanchions and awning stanchions, depth charge stuff.

I'm sorry to bore people cluttering up your feed, but..it's a build log! Dryfit of the forward tripod mast to see how the balance is and I'm pretty happy, sanded off the ladder rungs which I will replace and the radio mast to go (which, I have lost or didn't get so I replaced it with a spare brass mast.

Yes mate, they are the pedestals for the fire controllers that I will plonk on top when I paint them. I have added hatches behind them otherwise one could not climb into them!

I think EW was pretty rudimentary at this stage in 1945 as the IJN was struggling to keep its head above water!

Hi Greg, sorry mate i thought it was resolved when you pointed out I had mis-identified the items.  The items I was referencing to are those circled in a pic of yours I have edited.  At first glance they looked a bit like a an EW equipment that emerged just after the war and I thought perhaps the Japanese were the first to use/invent it. I am wrong there I think.  As you pointed out, these are the base for binoculars or some other equipment?   Sorry to have confused the situation.

Great diagram BTW  - those were interesting Reference Manuals; ; the Admiralty Manuals of Seamanship (and the USN equivalent) are particularly useful for steel navy ships if you can get your hands on them - they were updated (new editions) every few years.

Nice work. I agree that lanyard needs redoing, but the one deadeye being a little higher does not necessarily need to be redone. Sometimes, deadeyes were not perfectly lined up. In the natural course of working the ship, they could easily get slightly out of line. It is up to you, though.

Small update, Got shrouds on the Fore Mast. I have to redo the second lanyard from the bow, I turned it the wrong way. I managed to get the third deadeye too high so that has to come off also to be redone. Figured I would post this now otherwise it wouldn't happen for another week!!
That's all the news for now.

No, I didn't stop, just had a serious back problem, a software release which didn't release yet, and heaps of other excuses.

I've been working - on and off - on the hull, did some PE here, and some PE there. Got a third hand from MM (it's eye candy!!!) dropped something on the funnel which the funnel didn't like so I had the first repairs ... probably more to come ... anyways lads (any lasses?) without further a do some more eye food

Michael Mott's hand (he is currently working with a single one I presume ...?)

A side ladder (pilot's ladder?), and davits. These look so much better than the plastic junk from the kit

and for a change I picked p sme PE, and started on the first catapult, parts and initial fases

Still a lot more work to do. As I wrote on Greg's topic, it seems that the old tool has far less, or not such good detail on the plastic, as the new tool. Have quite a number of sheets left!!!

    Cheers

Very nice progress. The display board is beautifully done, and the beads give it a great finished look. Will try to remember and incorporate that idea in the future.

Speaking of weather, we've had about five straight days of rain here in Tampa and some thunder storms as well. Not real heavy rains, but much needed and enough to give the ground a good soaking, helping to replenish the aquifer.

Another small update on the O16. Before tackling the railing on the con I wanted to finely cement the deck torpedo launcher doors to the hull. Instead of closing the launcher area off on both sides I cemented one closed and cemented the other door laying down so we can peek inside and see the launcher. I relity they fold down inboard to lay against stops on top of the pressure hull.
This was actually done in to time so I decided to complete the display board. I cut a piece of boxwood to 1/16 inch thick by 9 1/4 by 1 1/8 inch to cover my poplar base piece nicely. Glued and clamped it to set to cure overnight.
In the meantime I cut two 1/8 inch pins of bamboo to place the model on. Originally I thought to turn two mooring bollards to set the model on and actually started to make one on my Unimat lathe but on a visit to Hobby Lobby and browsing along the isles I found some really nice brass beads that would fit. Well, okay, not quite mooring bollards but it saved me a lot of time.

Today was a rainy day with T-storms, thus ideal to spend some time on the display board. I cleaned a little excess glue off, sanded it down and applied a coat of warm satin Colonial maple stain. Rubbed it in real good and applied a second coat on it and repeated step, let it dry.
I drilled two 1/8 inch holes into the bottom of the sub and when the stain dry enough to handle I also drilled two 1/8 inch holes into the display board at the appropriate places.  Glued the pins in, put the brass beads on and placed the O16 on it. I'm really happy with the way it looks.

If youns don't mind I like to add e few pics of the O16's interior as well.

Foremast range controller and platform complete. Added a few details to make it look a little better.

The platform itself has a PE deck and rails as part of the upgrade, with triangular gussets underneath it, and the railings sand additional gussets were shaped on brass rod to make the circle.
