    Sailing off the bench.......

I'll need to focus on building my wife a hair washing station for her in house salon....so I'll be at that for a bit.
    Happy new year everyone......

Here are some pix of the stepped mast from several angles.

Got to let it dry for a couple of hours before I begin to focus on deciphering the many lines and getting the correct ones belayed on the spider band.

I'm enjoying the speed of the build at this point...I truly think this technique of nearly finishing each mast before stepping....makes the completion look as if it's not years off.......

Added the rest of the upper topsail rigging.  Just a few touch-ups and some detailing left.

I'll step the mast..then begin the main shrouds.  I have to swing the main mast port/starboard to make this the simplest it can be and that means I cannot fix the lower topsail until that work is complete.

    Have a fine evening.

After the sail was dry, I shackled up the sheets and reefed in the clews.

Still have to add the reef points,  the leach lines, clew lines and the downhauls.

But I'm getting there...and then the mast will get stepped into the hull.

    UPDATE.....
Thinking, a few friends may be wondering if I'm actually back to this build after taking a little "fun break".
Well here's your evidence..... and a good laugh to go with it.
Finishing up the Cross Jack Yards, and the Topsail Yards went pretty well since I had already shaped them and had them ready for the eyebolts and iron works.  It didn't take long for me to regain the silver soldering technique required to complete the iron works.
The laugh comes when I moved on to shape the Royal and Topgallant yards.
Got them all turned and, the ones with eyebolts and iron works were finished.... something just didn't seem right.
When laid along with the longer yards, the LENGTHS did not fit my eye.
Checked all measurements against the drawing specs..... everything was perfect.
    RECHECKED..... still perfect.
Then it hit me.....  When I took the specs and made the layout sketch, I had not re-scaled them from 1:72 to fit my 1/60th scale!!!!
After a few choice words I cannot repeat here.... Back to the lathe.
Think we got it right this time.
This, along with all the holiday activity, and trying to remove a mountain of oak tree leaves from my yard has kept me occupied.
    Happy New Year all!

Instead of using a wad of paper to help extend the sail into a more natural billow and distance from the mast...I used a cotton applicator taped to a alligator clip.  This idea worked out fantastic....I could set the distance easily. Just wait for the glue to dry....(Gonna use this every time)

    Looks great Rob!

Question-how did you get your relaxed lifts to hang so perfectly? I always end up with a twisted mess.

    Thanks,

Once all the yards are mounted, then I will add all the relaxed lifts in sequence.

I began the topgallant yard by adding all the eye bolts and the sheet block...now I'm getting ready to rig the foot ropes and stirrups.
The sheet holes have been drilled and chamfered.

    Rob,

How portable is your GR? I'd sure like to see it at our next PSSM meeting at the Foss Museum (sometime this spring-I don't know when yet).

The model looks fantastic. Most realistic sails in a long time.

    SPECIAL EVENT CELEBRATION.....
This photo has a very special meaning for me personally.  As I have said in an earlier comment, this model of the USS Constitution will be my last major tall ship.
With that in mind, and knowing just how much I struggle with tying ratline clove hitch knots, this posting is to celebrate the last ratline clove hitch of my life.

Midway down the Mizzen topmast shrouds (port side).

Here is  my latest progress. I have finished the lower main mast shrouds. Things are going well. I have posted two pictures. One has all the threads attached before trimming and the other is the finished product. Now it is on the to the mizzen mast shrouds.

Thanks Harvey.  Over the years it always seamed difficult for me to see how much effort was required to make Silkspan look like real sails...not to mention real cloth(which is way out of scale).  I began using paper about 30 years ago....I've improved on my technique and from what I have determined....they are quite convincing these days.
Thanks for the fine comments and encouragement.
Paper is actually very easy to make look like authentic sails...when manipulated with the right tools and treated with paint.  Finding material for scale sheet points (Nylon paint brush) was a spontaneous stroke of genius. If I say so myself.

Not sure how mobile the model is....I will have to consider its travels.......thanks for enquiring.....it would be a real privilege to show her off.

I'm liking the paper sails too....they are opaque enough..but still present a real sail like quality...
A few more for the day.....

Probably the best modern source on seamanship, including furling sails, that reviews practices spanning roughly the 17th to the end of the 19th century is:

HARLAND, J. (1985): Seamanship in the Age of Sail.- 320 p., London (Conway Maritime Press).

I think every sailship-modeller should have this book handy !

There are also various contemporary works that are available as reprints or as e-books for (free) download. For the 19th century this would be e.g.

BRADY, W.W. (1852): The Kedge Anchor; or Young Sailor’s Assistant. Appertaining to the Practical Evolutions of Modern Seamanship, Rigging, Knotting, Splicing, Blocks, Purchases, Running-Rigging, and Other Miscellaneus Matters Applicable to Ships of War and Others.- 400 p., New York (Published by the Author).

LEVER, D. (1819): The Young Sea Officer’s Sheet Anchor.- 124 p., London (Nachdruck 1963 bei E.W. Sweetman & Co., New York).

    NARES, G.S. (1862): Seamanship.- 232 p., (reprint 1979 by Gresham Books).

Good remark, Allan. There are more possibilities of course. I have good experience with this kind of wax paper and it is also easily available for me. The mass is baked in the oven at a temperature of about 130 ° C, so the wax paper endures without problems. I always use a new sheet of wax paper for next decoration.

    filed surface....

    Greg,
I can remember my days as an apprentance, when the master was teaching the young guys to file a flat surface to a steel chunk, which also had to be perpendicular to the sides.....
most of us had produced (common) a slight convex surface, whereby the master meant that a real good job would produce a slight koncave surface , because it was possible due to the files shape,  wow !!!
