  1. You guys really know your stuff on these ships. What book would you suggest I read to get a little more hip on this stuff?
  2. I am following your work Rob. I will not be back on the Victory until the Spring when I return home. You are making great progress.
  3. Thanks Keith of Clearway. And thanks for the tip on the surform. It works well for these walnut planks. I had that tool buried amongst my tools for everything you can think of box. I ordered a new blade. Interesting how a tool like that is the same for, perhaps, 30 or 40 years and you can still get a part for it. I am also wondering now if the plank arrangement for the 1st hull was a good idea. It was easier but I need to apply the 2nd layer over it before I am sure. I still like the way Lapinas did his Santa Maria. I should add that heating the glue makes it cure faster and I am hoping that will help when I get to the area of the hull where clamping is a problem.
  4. Just so you know I am studying your work I especially like the way the chainplate, deadeye and strops look. Your comment about the deck getting busy looking is definitely true. I am proceeding now with the 2nd paneling of the hull on the Santa Maria. You guys work and get more done than me.
  5. Thanks Ryland I was thinking of that wondering if any of it shows in the finished product. Will be putting post on inside of hull soon. That should help as well.
  6. I have been looking for Keiths on the site. I think I have it figured but I enjoy the back and forth anyway.
  7. Thank you Now that I tried the method I used to plank the hull I will return to tapering. It is not easier and towards the end point it gets difficult to fit the planks. But it will still come out all right.
  8. Excellent work. My approach seems to be so much different than yours. I decided with the first hull planking to not taper the planks but rather follow the pictures in the book. You have done an excellent job. I will be looking at your build more in the following days.
  9. I have been away but I am trying to make a comeback. I am working on the Santa Maria in my other house. I need to take some time and look at what you have been doing. Off hand it looks like you have made quite a bit of progress.
  10. I have been looking at your work. Goodness knows I have been away. I need to look harder at the last few pages. I was enjoying the back and forth between you and Clearway-very interesting. Got a kick out of the Binnacle compass back on page 5. I feel like I put some posts in the wrong place.-hope it was not a problem.
  11. Been out of action lately. Relocating to other house and going to doctors. There are always some things to fix when changing houses. We also put in a couple of holly trees-hoping the deer will not bother them. I have been in the shipyard but did not get around to posting the latest. The Santa Maria is a little tricky with hull planking. Learning how to fit both ends of a plank into a space was interesting but not too hard.
  12. Historical pictures of the ship on the ice are fun to see. Thanks
  13. Not sure about the edges. But I am going to copper plate the bottom of the hull so I assume I will put copper on the edges as well as on the rudder below the water line.
  14. I feel good about how I did the garboard here. I put the second board in using spacers. Then I fit the garboard plank in. Lapinas: I should mention I had to shave the bottom of one of the frames that was high. See arrow. I had also raised it to be even with the deck but it was just a frame made too big. I will probably be shaving it more as I add planks.
  15. Space is a problem. It takes a few steps more, especially cleanup and continual organization of equipment. No matter, I enjoy how it fills my day. Again this is a time filler not something I must do. TV is a drag. I can only read so many hours per day. So this way I can do those things which I must do and then get in the shipyard. Actually working on one ship means you must let the glue dry as well as sit back and think about how to do certain things. That includes finding info from sites like yours as well as other research. Right now I am planning the bottom of the hull on Santa Maria and it takes a lot of thought and research. At this point I am thinking I will do the second plank first and then fill the space with the garboard plank. This ship demands a lot of beveling of the frames.
  16. What a beauty! I see now why one would want to build her. Christmas without a vaccine does not look great but we will just have to deal with it. I see the UK shut down again. Not sure what that means in the UK. Here in the US the biggest impact is on restaurants and gyms. Some states have more constraints. The threat is greatest for people like me and it is important for me to take care. As far as young people goes I am not sure they need such constraints. Too much politics over here. Thanksgiving will be a tough one here. That often involves the entire family-again the old mixing with the young is difficult.
  17. Did they actually do herring bone installations on the ships? Was there a special structural reason? In the future just assume I like the detail work. I think the experience I am getting on Santa Maria will help me with Victory when I return to New Hampshire in the Spring.
  18. The instructions have some ideas on planking that are helpful. I thought I would include them. Beveling the frames will take time and it varies along each frame. I am not sure I will do all short pieces as shown.
  19. I did not mention how fine the deck itself looks-delicate painstaking work.
  20. Keith you are something else. I am struggling to get up some speed with the building of the Santa Maria and you are inspiring. I have read the small statements you made about the windlass and the capstan about 12 times and am still thinking. Emmet
  21. I have been gone for more than a month now and am working on putting my head back into ship building. I have on done a little but wanted to put in a post as stimulation to get on with the job.
  22. I do not know why the Santa Maria is appearing below but I want to add some recent work I did on Victory. I added some walnut planks. This will be my last post on this site until Spring of 2021. I am now in New Jersey and am working on Santa Maria. I like being warm and will miss building the Victory.
