Hi Rob, You sent me an email and apparently I do not know how to return the same. MSN would not deliver. I see where you said you did drill a hole for doing the cannonballs. I did not drill a hole. I just made a depression in the wood. I had some shotgun shells around from days gone by so I took one apart and made myself a collection of cannonballs. Again I used a touch of superglue and dropped the buck shot in the hole. I hope that helps. I am going to be gone for about a month but I will always be looking in. My question remains as to how to send a personal email like this? Sorry for the confusion. I have been traveling.

Looks good Rob. For what it is worth are use the buck shot and killed a shallow 1 mm holes. A touch of glue and tweezers.

I am still giving some limited time to the ship but I am fairly busy with the admiral working around the house. I almost have the tree out of the way. Since a shoulder replacement I no longer Chop wood. I have an electric splitter and the logs usually can’t be any more then 10” in diameter and a foot long. In this case the maple is about 13” dia and only 6” long. The tree was in the path of constant rainwater runoff and that is how it died. I also had to take time and put new antifreeze in my boiler. I shut the house down when I go south. We have to go back to Jersey for more skin surgery for the admiral. We are then going to Montana, just west of the Rockies, for about a month. We will be bringing friends back with us to New Hampshire. Usually we fly but we do not think it is safe enough. I am currently putting walnut on the Victory. I am hoping to do continuous planks. We shall see. I have to post a picture myself.

Thank you for your input. One of the things I made sure of was that the garboard plank would go on evenly. In one or two cases I left the frame a tad low So that the guard board plank would fit correctly. The only reason I raise the frame was so that the cardboard plank would fit well. It is not necessary for the deck to fit on the keel. Lowering the frame was more important. Thanks for looking in. I appreciate your ideas. It is great that we help each other.

Living with mistakes and planking seems to be part of building ships. I bet the real thing wasn’t much different. And yes paint will solve a lot of problems. Once again the beauty of wood is being able to make up for mistakes. I am out of action, being a lumberjack these days, but I enjoy your work.

Love the details-great work. Right now I am hungup with cutting the tree in my driveway and splitting it for firewood. I am no longer the speedy one so it takes a lot of time and I sleep in between.🤪

Thank you for the details. Is it 15 but when a person makes up his mind to do something will be done. Upon returning to the Hampshire here is what greeted me in my driveway. Chainsaw is a must where I live.

Hi Keith, It is a bit of a break but I am missing Victory. This is just a way for me to fill my time when I go south for the winter. OTOH it is still challenging. Chances are, depending on this weird virus, I will finish the Santa Maria before I return from Florida next April. In some ways the planking will be more difficult as the planks are much thinner. It will be critical to make sure the frames are not moved while installing the planks. It does reflect how important it is to go from port to starboard when planking as the hull will get twisted. Btw I am watching and enjoying your latest tiny additions to your Terror build. I also like the bantering you are doing with Christopher about ship terms that are new to me. the size and shape of the compass and magnetic and Azimuth direction was interesting. In the Army we shot azimuth's on a compass for short distances and plotted it on a map accounting for the declination angle. It was easy on flat land but in the mountains it got more difficult because you had to use the map more to follow your bearing. (Using a magnetic compass on a boat in New Hampshire you had to account for a correction of about 14 degrees. It was better to have a GPS for the lake. You could also get an app for a price with a smartphone.) I guess Columbus used the difference between Polaris and the magnetic compass to discover the declination angle-just surmising. Now I will have to research it.

Will be back at my New Hampshire house Tuesday. In addition to grandson's graduation the Admiral has to have some Mohs surgery tomorrow. anxious to get back to the Victory. While I was here I started the Santa Maria and got her framed. The SM will be my traveling ship. At 30" it is easy to transport. It is also a simpler ship than Victory. see

Good information about how you kept the planks in place. Details matter. First or last, it is the struggle that counts. Good work.
