On my return ,my first thought was to do the "Marina ll" ...... but as you can see I changed my  mind. When I purchased the Marina ll, I also bought this Red Dragon kit . Hobbylinc had a pretty good price on it, so I ended up getting both. Both are different from what I've been doing . The Red Dragon kit is really not an overwhelming
chore, as you can see from the photos of whats in the box. I'm not complaining, after all it's not an expensive kit.
I will say this though, A.L. really does a nice job of merchandising their kits. The material is decent, except for the basswood ply. I like basswood, but not for keels or frames. I think the Marina uses real ply. Well anyway,
I'll post a couple pictures just to get started with this log. I'll star posting some of the build as soon  as I straighten out the bend in the basswood keel .... as always thanks for look'n in....

    All,
Even though I'm embroiled in building Willie Bennett, my next build is the MS Phantom.  My friend purchased it a fair time ago, and it looks like he quit right after he started hacking away at the stern before giving the entire shebang to me.  I think he realized his talents lie elsewhere.  At any rate, if I wrote Model Expo and request they send a new hull for "my" Phantom, do you think they'd send one?  For a solid hull kit, it seems like a pretty important part, but I don't want to take advantage of them, considering how great they've been for me with the WLB.  Has anyone tried to get this particular part replaced under their part guarantee?

    Thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Rob

I do apologize for the late reply.........I was on here the other day after work.......and I was actually falling asleep as I was writing  {if that's possible} .

getting back to work after a vacation really stinks........I'm looking forward to the day when I can have the full time vacation     gonna be a bit broken with the progress.......gotta work a couple nights at the airport,   but I'm sure I can gain some ground during the day.  I appreciate the kind comments and thanks to all you fine folks who hit the like button.   the big thing now is to make some sense out of those two pieces I added to the cabin bulkhead.

    more progress soon.........

once the progress gets past the hull........there's more..    I'll try and make it interesting

I do like the way this is shaping up, Denis.  The portholes in the bow area, and the prop/rudder.  Her lines look good to my eye.  I'm enjoying watching where you take her.

well,  thanks Patrick.....and thanks as well Piet.    glad to know that I did something that resembles a tri-hull.  the thing that is noticeable on them,  is that the bow is a lot broader,  and doesn't come to a point.   I think the only way this worked as well as it did,  was my lack of tapering the planks.  it turned into a blessing     I still haven't done the resin......I'm not sure it will affect it....but it rained here and now it's humid as hell.   I may still get a chance to get out there...although it's 8 PM right now.   I did manage to do something on her........    thanks again for your kind comments

    so......with the looks improving,  I thought I'd take care of the mal-positioned shoe.   since a rudder would be useless out there in never-never land,  and would require a tiller and an upper shaft bracket {so cool.....I'm making the parts up now   }
........I gotta bring all this back into perspective.

the first thing I did,  was chop a section out,  with the shoe still attached.   it still boggles my mind it hasn't broke off yet...I have had that hull 'three ways to first night'. {well......that's what they said in that book I wuz read'in}   another notch was cut out to transplant the shoe.    liberal elbow grease there too

Dr. Howard,  Dr. Fine, and Dr Howard will be assisting me at this pint........errrrr....point!  the shoe was transplanted onto the patient.

while they were here....we grafted the prop........only a two blade lefty folks......'tis all I got on hand.

I guess I should add the rudder at this time too........the hole was drilled in the shoe and the bottom of the stern.   a rudder was fashioned from some 1/8 scrap stock.   I still have a bunch of those small dowels....a whole bottle full.

I won't need any of these dowels for quite some time      I don't know how I did it,  but I managed to drill the hole through the rudder without ruining it........shows you how small these dowels are.   the rudder's ready......I'm ready..... the rudder was pinned into place.

I removed the prop so it would be out of the way.......and to see if I can remove it for painting purposes.  it can be done!
OK..........put it back in place,  and here is what the final assembly looks like.

I might add some brass parts here and there.  for now though,  it still need to go back to the garage.  I'm hoping that the next time I get back to her,  I can even do some painting.   first things first.........get the hull back in order....the few touch ups and sanding.....and then the main event

    @ Black Viking,

    Thanks for the birthday wishes
I still have a lot of bamboo but I don't use it anymore.
I'm lying.......I'm using it to start a fire at the fireplace !!!!!!!!
Hennie give me his left over from his Aggy so I can close the hull now

    @ Dominic,

Have you ever see the SotS without gun ports ????
Take a good look when it is now working with this one

    Wow,

Thank you very much for the birthday wishes.........

You know, I went to sleep  as a young men and wake up as a oldtimer.....
    But again Thanks !!!!!!!!!!

    @ Bob,

She will be on hold for a while so the Aggy will be finished before she is

    @ Hennie,

We will see you tomorrow .
    Please with coffee and vlaai

Then an update who is not totally an update but more a demolition.
    Yep, again !!!!!
I was planking with the bamboo and that's was not fun to work with.
There are so many bad parts in each of the planks that I need a pound of filler to get that straight !
    So ,it was demolition time.
I remove all of it and start all over again with planks that I had left from the first planking of the Aggy.
    I'm happy that I save that !!!!!!!
The lower part of the hull are gonna be the planks from the Aggy and above that ( see the pictures ) I'll be using the bamboo planks.
I cut all the bad parts away and use the good parts that there was left.
And that works a lot better !
I know there must be a lot of sanding but that's no problem.....
On sunday or monday I will sand the parts that is done.
Then I can see what to do further.
Tomorrow ( saturday ) we are going to Hennie to see what he is doing with his Aggy.
Whe n I have another update I will report it.

Before I forget, there is also a launch at the SotS.
A few pictures of how it looks also.

Thanks for the kind words guys. A lot of things I built, I gave to this brother down through the years, including some real nice wood ship models. My sister-in-law asked me if I wanted them back but I asked her to give them to her grandchildren who have always admired the models. They were tickled pink to get them.
I am going to be just fine. It's one of those things in life we all have or eventually will go through. At this point, two brothers and one sister have passed, but wow, we had great times together. Never argued and fought with each other. Always a closeness that is invaluable and treasured memories.

Here is my brother and I, a couple of months before he passed.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss as well and hope your heart is mending. One thing I have found when a travesty like this hits my family is to bury myself into my hobby work shop for hours and even days at a time until I come to terms with the event. I tend to day dream when working on my models and drift back in time to parts of my life or people in my life that I like to remember fondly. It might take me an hour to lay one plank or thread one deadeye when I drift off on my travels back in time. But we each have our own way of dealing with grief or that unexpected tragic event. I hope you find yours and work through it.

My funk came primarily when my oldest brother passed away around the first of this year. When something like that happens, it makes me realize how unimportant some things are in the big scheme of things. The model building blues will pass and once again the good times will roll.

I actually like my Dremel saw. It is permanently attached to my work bench with a fish tank pump attached. It cannot compare with proper scroll saws and has lots of vibrations especially if you crank the speed up but it is very cheap and has performed well for me. It is also built well.

I had a single speed Delta early on but it had some bearing issues.  Anyway, I find the variable speed very useful as it gives you more control of your cuts.
