edmay reacted to Kevin Kenny in HMS Thorn by Kevin Kenny - 1:48 scale - Swan-class - David Antscherl practium
I am building the HMS Thorn Swan class of 1779, so far there is only one plan from the National Maritime Museum that makes any referance to this ship. She was part of the fleet that invaded Trinidad in in 1797 a fleet that carried my ancester to Trinidad. It is my plan to video the entire build on an ipad and post videos as i go along. So far i have made 5 videos on the build.

As far as the reef-bands are concerned sources are inconsistent. Take these two:
Here with three reef-bands:
(current fore topsail)
And here from "James Lee/the masting and rigging of english ships of war" page 139 with four:
(current main topsail)

The lee source i did take is the one from 1788/1802 as Bounty was as of 1789 and then Pandora did hunt for the mutineers not much later. With the reefed sails sitting on top of the yards I am not shure ... I might be wrong ... I just considered it to look better ...

Did work on the bowwave and foam topic. Rendertimes are horrible. Each frame around 25 min. Therefore very short. More a test though.

edmay reacted to BANYAN in HMB Endeavour by BANYAN - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:60 - circa 1768
Second instalment.
The rigging is slackened to allow the jeers to be lowered about half way down the mast, I seize the slings around the yard. I then prepare the parrel off the yard and fit it after the yard has been slung and raised a little closer to the tops. After tightening it I haul the completed yard.
cheers

Hi Bruce
I know what you are talking about, I had the same trouble with rigging lines
I don't know what they are called, I found them at either Joann Fabrics of a craft store that I shop at.
They are tiny springs with two plastic ends, you close the ends and it makes the spring form a "u" shape. The curve top part of the spring opens and you slip the lines in the open spring, then let go and the spring goes back to being straight, holding the lines.
I would think that you could just use springs with out the plastic, you just need to make the coils of the spring open on one side. Also the spring has to be coiled tight.
If you need me to take a pic let me know.

Get yourself a cheap fly tying vice - used to make flies for fishing. There are plenty of cheap ones available on eBay. I use mine extensively when rigging.

I dont think so Antony....this is the 1700 version. That one was kind of easy to figure out. Unless I am not understanding what is wrong with the one posted. Can you elaborate? If I understand it correctly as a Yank.....before Ireland became part of the united Kingdom there were fewer bars in the flag and its the same top and bottom.

Hi Chuck.
The true Union Jack in your post is incorrect.
This is the King's colours.
Have a look here. The flag has a top and bottom
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Jack
Worth looking.
Regards Antony.

Thank You...its so very confusing and contradicts other dates and standards. Maddening really. You think it would be very cut and dry what years these things were used. So many sources have different dates and different images for these. I am going with number 4.
