Keeping adding the elements on the deck.

The interior of the bulwarks were planked using some leftover 0.5 mm strips. The instructions say that it should be painted, but I was afraid I would ruin the planking (I am not a skilled painter) so I left them natural.

I used all the supplied materials for it, excepting the stairs, made them from some leftovers.

The instructions say the deck should be simulated by using a pen and straight lines directly on the solid hull. I didn't like the idea so I've searched in my goodies shelf and found some 2x1mm lime wood strips. I glued them to the hull using PVA colored with black ink to simulate the caulking and then sand it so I can lower the deck with 0.5 mm or so. I did that before mounting the bulwarks. The strips are 8 cm long.

    The Hull

Since I am still in the process of making the thursters, the work on the ship is quite slow, usually I just glue a plank or two in the stern area.
This is the one of the handful of places where actual planking is being used, most of the hull is "planked" by large pieces of pre-cut 2mm plywood, not that I am complaining, it's just that this way is easy to do and fast...

    Attaching the bottom parts.

Started the planking of the inner stern bend. Since I didn't post for a while, I already have finished the stern planking.

And here comes my first question for the more experienced members. Do you know of a trick of how to sand these kinds of surfaces? I think this is a convex surface, in mathematical terms. I used my thumb, and of course ended up burning it a bit...

    The Rear deck

During these weeks I was also working on the rear deck, where a planked area of the deck is. For this I got for myself 18 meters of mahogany strip and 5 meters of lime strip. In the course of one day, cut the mahogany to 700 pieces and started the patient part of the process.

The strips, 3x1 mm mahogany and 1x1 mm lime.

The detail of the glued planks, the black stuff is PVA mixed with black color. Was trying this method out, turns out, it is quite a good one, except the amount of sanding needed to get it finished.

    In the process of sanding...

The almost finished deck. A few more hours of sanding at fine grits, and at least 3 coats of semi mat lacquer, and it should be done.

Rigging complete, really very simple on this one. I have now replaced the three 12.7mm high altitude guns, these are so much nicer than the Flyhawk ones. I also threw in the 2 quad torpedo tubes. Coming together.

Hi All, I've been busy with what seems small but time consuming stuff.  The heat here at the moment hasn't helped as we've been up around 44C (111F) for a few days now.  Hopefully this is coming down this week but it doesn't make me want to sit over a work bench!!
I made the tiller house a little while ago as per the kit instructions I didn't feel that it was good enough so I clad it with Mahogany and stained it Dark Oak and I think that it looks better.

These first two are as per the kit

    Now after Cladding

Now after staining.  I'll give it a coat of Sanding Sealer before I glue it in place.

I've also made a start on the Rudder.
I need to tidy it up and fit the 'bolt' Heads and stain/paint as my next job.  I'm hoping to have it done and fitted before I go to England in a week or so.

Hi Everyone, been fairly busy over the last couple of days and completed (with a little bit of tidying up to do) the Wales and Bulwark Strakes.  The kit says to build up the strakes edge on edge, which is fine if the ship was going to be left as natural wood but as I'm painting it I decided to make it in one piece.  The Wales are also painted and I'd be interested in your opinions over the colour of the upper Wale as I've left it as natural wood colour and not matt black like the other two. Anyway here's the photo's.

Well it's done! I finished Woody Joe's Shinmei-zukuri shrine model. It took a while since I was documenting the steps – just posted the 8th and final part of the build.

Here are some final pics. If your interested in building this or any other Woody Joe kit, as always, I highly recommend buying from the Japanese online hobby dealer Zootoyz at http://zootoyz.jp.

    Hi Carl,

I'd love to know the name of your book on Japanese temple construction. I think I could learn a lot from something like that.

In the meantime, I just posted Part V of my build, which puts me just about half way through completion of the project: https://shipmodeler.wordpress.com/2017/05/04/building-woody-joes-shinmei-zukuri-shrine-part-v/#more-3716

as I am building out of card to ascertain the layout, I have simply broken the superstructure into modules, so i have now done a mock up of the bridge, there is simply mno point in putting in windows at this time, I am keeping the card version as simple as possible, the final version will have  a internal bridge layout  with lighting

Or you COULD go the other way - build a full model AND a Cross-section of the same to show some of the interior detail that can no longer be seen after hull and deck planking :
