Very nice project to follow Vivian! I like the aproach to darken the wodd before building it. It will give you great control. How does the wax work with ca and wood glue?

Jack that is a very cool thing to do, hats off to you!

Nice upgrades! Those small lion details you painted earlier must be frustrating to do. Nice that you post your work for others to use.

Hey all! Last days I've managed to do some more details. The railing was less problems to get in place than I imagined. It fitted very well to the shape of the ship. It was a good advice to do it last Nigel as its fragile by it's nature. The ropes holding the anchor and the others hanging will be corrected when the model is positioned on the stand and I can tell how it should hang.

And with this it turns out I'm done with the model. It's a mixed feeling as I'm happy to have reached my goal but also feel a little sad as I'll miss working on it and talking to you all about it. It has been a great inspiration and source of knowledge, so thanks eveyone for the help and support!

These will likely be the last outdoor pctures of her and I will now start on the case so more to come.

Thanks JM, once you get what goes where she builds in to a nice model. Feel free to ask and perhaps me or the other Billing Vasa builders can help.

Karl, your model turned out beautyful!

Vasa was a regal class ship, a kings powerful ship named after his heraldic name. Regal ships where usually named after things that were symbols of the king, The Spectre, The Crown, The Sword, The Apple (like Vasa sister ship Äpplet) and so on. Vasa is the family name (heraldic name?) of the king Gustav II Adolf. We call the time period between 1521-1654 vasatiden (The Vasa time) in swedish history because of these kings (and one queen). The V or W is because they had no clear spelling rules back then and wrote anyway they wanted.

Here's their heraldic symbol, same as on the Vasa ship. The thing in the middle is a vasakärve, a bundle of seed.  These symbols are still common is swedish authorities.

I would sand it now. I think it's not something bad that different areas have different nuances. I try to do it the other way around, to make everything slightly different in color. That makes the look more vibrant and alive imo. It boils down to a matter of aesthetic choice and what look you want. If you want it clean and perfect then wait.

My apologies for resurrecting this old thread. I noticed the absence of the votive so-called Flemish galleon ("galeon Flamenco") from 1593, at the Madrid Naval Museum, which is pertinent to the subject. Also, there are several interesting images of Swedish ships at the volume on Christian III period (1533-1588) of the Danish fleet history by Barfod, 1995.

Thanks for the input guys! The Duyfken looks pretty close to how I would have guessed the ships looked like. I made a drawing of what I'd like to build. Just to get the proportions and the level of details. The drawing is not very detailed, but just to get the lines set before the next stage.

What do you think? Could it pass for a small swedish (dutch style) warship made in 1591?

Thanks! Yeah the thread linked is made by me. Fred gives a great explanation of the constructions and diferences between dutch tradition and other traditions.

Now I am more curious if there is any information of how they looked, or if there are models of ships from this era. Half Moon was made early 17th century, but her look is quite different from how I thought warships looked at that time.

Yeah there is much great info of Kalmar Nyckel! It's built later than Vasa and even if the replica is a truly beautyful ship,  she to me seems to have many things that is not historically correct. I still love how she looks though.

Thats a great find, looking forward to follow your build of it!

Painted the lover stern to give the project a boost. First I stained in 2 oak mixes. Then acrylics for some nuances and shading. Then pastels in 3 browns and red, Finally a coat of flat varnish bounding the pastels and giving it a good surface.

Starting to feel awkward about posting given the view/reply ratio,

Anyway, here is the final windows and how I did it. I wanted them green as the original Wasa. After the frames where done, I painted some clear plastic with olive green acrylic paint. I then chosed the best parts, and glued them behind the frames, the painted side is inwards so it will look shiny and not get in contact with the glue.

Michael, thanks for the tip. I hadnt decided on using nails, but man you got so much of her look through them!

Ok, here are the most interesting pictures I managed to take. I tried to get pics that I missed looing for reference. Its really hard to get good pictures at the museum. Almost no light and the ship being so dark makes it difficult. I have worked with the pics contrast and brightness alot in photoshop, so dont take the colors as gospel.

First are hull and planking pics. The weather deck and some other details.

Cheers mate, means a lot! Actually I am in the planning stage for the next build. I'd like to make a ship of the Swedish king Karl IX, Gustav II Adolfs father. Not much documentation about them so I will have some freedom when designing it. But it takes some time to think through it all.
