hi all
coming to the end of this little sloop build. finished rigging guns and swivels. need to order some more rope from chuck for the coils on the belaying points. just the lantern to finish and install.
display case to make and then were done!

two posts in one day!
some photos of chucks lantern kit under construction.
ive primed the lantern with ochre brown from the vallejo range. it will be painted "old gold" eventually.
i know this is probably not technically correct but the captain of the ship wants a bit of bling!

hi all
just a short post.coming to the end of the build on the sloop.
building one of chucks lantern kits for the taffrail.all standing and running rigging done.just got to make up some rope coils of different diameter threads for various belaying points.cannons also need to be rigged.....experimenting with making some tiny hooks!!!!!
all i need to do then is make a display case!

hi all
some progress has been made with the rigging.just got the boom and driver to rig,ratlines( left these almost till last),cannons to rig , falconets to install and a few other bits and pieces.final item will be one of chucks lanterns for the transom.

hi all
managed to get some more work done on the sloop today.
yards temporarily rigged to mast with parrels.
spreading yard requires a truss i believe,get round to that when rigging proper starts.
pear wood blocks done for cathead.
decided to make a binnacle for the deck. lifted the general shape and proportion from ron macarthys book on scratch building a two masted sloop of 1752.
built from a ramin core and then skinned with 0.6mm box veneer,top from 1mm box and panel details from 0.6mm box veneer.
details ; copper pipe for lantern chimney and amati brass pins for handles.
tomorrows job is rigging the gun tacles and breeching ropes.

found some photos of a previous biuld....hms snake 1/64 scale ....somewhat modified from a caldercraft kit.

hi all
been busy over the last couple of days.unfortunately its back to four nights of work.boo hoo!
almost ready to start rigging.forgot to make the pawl bit for the windlass but will get round to that next time im off.
had my recent delivery from chuck passaro,beautiful pear wood blocks plus some more rope.
once the riggings complete theres a lantern for the transom,another of chucks offerings and then finally the swivel guns.

found some more pictures of current build.should bring things up to date. almost ready to start rigging.will be using chuck passaros blocks and rope.
already used some of chucks cannon barrels on scratch built carriages.absolutely superb qaulity turnings.
will also be using chucks lantern kit as a final stern embellishment.
postman brought my latest kit this morning,direct from model expo in florida . rn pinnace based on chucks prototype. should be an interesting build.
also have just subscribed to deagostini for their hms surprise kit.this will form the basis of a heavily modified kit build.some of the components are crude to say the least. i was intending to build this as the refitted ship circa 1798? hence the purchase of the original draft from the nmm.wont be starting this for another 12 months or so, lots of planning to do first.

finally managed to get the backboard finished for the display case.
should be an appropriate piece of artwork considering the model subject!!!
im now going to consider this project finished.
been a very enjoyable exercise.......looking forward to the next one.

That's a very nice build you have developing there Bob.
I have the Proxxon DB250 lathe, it is a fine little machine, but as you say working on longer spars can be a problem. I haven't put it into practice yet but I purchased a spare lathe bed( 27020-31 Replacement bed for micro lathe (part no PRO000160) £39.00.)
Fixed to a board against and in line with the machine bed, the tailstock can be re-positioned to give effectively more than twice the available working length, but as I said I haven't yet trialled it at maximum distance.
This is the company in the UK where I got the spare item, it had to be ordered, and took about three weeks to arrive.

today is a day of firsts.the first frames have been made. yipee!!!!!!
bit rough at the moment but we will sort the fiddly stuff out once all the frames are made.

Here is the aft deadwood construction. I used a black conservator's marker to simulate the tarred felt used along the joints.

Thank you again! Still have an awful lot to learn especially with regards to interpreting and working from lines plans. Currently trying to get my head around a line drawing of HMS cruiser from the nmm. Good job of got a plentiful supply of drawing paper I think there will be a lot of waste!
Looking forward to further updates on your triton, I shall be watching with great interest.

hi all
the glazing has now been installed in the case and the back panel temporarily placed in position.
im waiting for a particular item to be delivered from across the pond in order to complete the back panel......all will be revealed in good time.
since ive got a few days off i shall take some construction photos of the case construction, esp for kees as he asked , but it may be of interest generally.
