After reading all the theories and "how-to's" where the rubber meets the road....  I'd like some feedback on my batten.  I'm planking from the wales down to the batten first.  The batten represents where the wide wale planks will end... or should end.

AnobiumPunctatum reacted to EdT in Young America 1853 by EdT - FINISHED - extreme clipper
As always, I appreciate all of the comments so many have made on the Young America project.  I am sorry that it has been well over a month since the last progress report.  The model work has been on hold for a few reasons - work on the book manuscript, a two week vacation from which we just returned, and the need to do research and drawings for the next phases of the build - fitting out the main deck, masting and rigging.  I do not expect that there will be much progress on the model until later in the summer.

However, during that period I will be posting progress on the 1:96 POB version of the model that has been constructed for demonstration purposes - to support the POB modeling processes that are also described in the book.  Some may find this model and its contrasts with the 1:72 framed model interesting.  I will start a separate build log for this.  Since that model has progressed to the point shown  in one of the above posts, the build log will be somewhat retrospective, but I will continue it as far as I decide to take that model.  My intent with the smaller, simpler model has always been to take it to a point where remaining work on both versions can proceed from the same process descriptions.  That has been done and the final chapters in Volume I of the book apply to both versions.  However, I am considering continuing the POB build to a more finished state.

Again, thanks to everyone for the continued support and comments.

    Mike,

thanks for your interest, but I don't have an update for my log in the moment.
I didn't found the right arrangement for the cant frames until now. I found another sheer and profile plan in an Danish archive, which I have to study. If I found a possible solution for the cants I'll update the log.

in the moment I work on my second project HMS Fly 1/32.

Somehow, I missed your January 3 posting and am a bit bothered about that fifth deadeye and chain. Usually if modifications are made, these are drawn out in detail neatly, using either a different color ink or with dashed lines. This rough pencil addition looks like a proposal that was not, in fact, carried out. Just my opinion.

Here are all 5 pieces of the keelson scarphed together and installed.
They were also bolted down through every floor timber with 1 1/4" "bamboo" bolts.
Now the Stemson needs to be made.

I started the day ( very early ) by cutting the Frames for the Cockpit Floor. ( there is a gradual slope from the Bow to the Transom ) I then cut the Frames, and installed the Cockpit Floor. I then turned my attention to getting the camber set for the Deck. Next I installed the Deck starting at the Bow and working my way back toward the Transom. I then added the scarf to the sides of the Deck ( both Starboard and Port ) Next I made sure that the Bowsprit slot would work accordingly and then installed the bow section of the Deck. I then installed the Cockpit sides up to where the Cabin Bulkhead starts . I then faired the Deck in with the Hull. Then did the same with the Cockpit. Next will be to lay out the Cabin . Here are the results

Well it worked, Painting the Hull Flat White did the trick , I was able to get the Hull faired more easily  ( it reminded me of my Racing days , I would Fair the Keel on a regular basis especially before a race ) I then removed the Hull from the building Jig. then got the Building Jig cleaned up and ready to build the next one. Next will be to lay out the Deck and get it cutout and attached to the Hull. Here are the results

Today, I started the day by fairing the hull, wich proved to be more dificult than I had originally thought. I figured that it would take "maybe" a few hours, it ended up taking all day . I got her close and sprayed a coat of flat white on the Hull . ( I figured that the lines can be seen more easily ) next will be to get a final fairing and remove the Hull from the building jig. Here are the results

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...

Finished the 'stuff next to the thickstuff' and added the proposed filler pieces on one half of the ship (between the limber strake and keelson).  These pieces are not glued.  The one piece missing is where the pump is located.

Next up is the regular planks in the tween spaces and ponder the filling pieces in the meanwhile.

I'm now onto the hull planking starting with the first of the two wale layers. I made sure that each plank fit nicely into the stem to avoid as much sanding as possible. I don't have the clamp and glue technique sorted out yet so I just worked my way aft by hand and glued two or three bulkheads at a time. Although the wale location was previously marked, I did make some tiny adjustments as I went along. This was especially true where I had to ensure that both wales end up at the same location where the break of the counter and square tuck meet.

I would love to build one of these at 1/48. I'll need to improve my skills (by a lot). Win the lottery to afford a new big shed, lots of tools, and a display case big enough. Then I'd have to be extra, extra nice to the admiral for about 20 years. Still I can dream.
