after the track issue was finished,  the top deck was cemented in place.  I had it upside down on a box with enough weight on it to counter the residual warp that might still be there.  that went well.......both sides stayed down.  but the track problem isn't solved completely    because of how tight they are,  it might take longer,  but I fear that either the leading ......or even the drive gear bogies would finally break.  well folks.........the leading bogies have enough of an alignment issue that they might become the weak link.  I have some thicker brass rod........I'm going to see if I can modify them and keep them movable at the same time.  perhaps I can even reposition them to produce even a little extra slack    we'll see how that goes........

Just adding a couple shots of the tank commander...a modified Tamiya figure done with artist oils, I'm not as good with figure as I used to be...hands shake a little more and can't focus the peepers the way I used to, sucks being vintage!!
Still a little touch up required.

and last but not least is a little Panzer II, painted in Afrika Korp livery, the tank is complete but I'm still working on the commander figure, this too will receive a vignette base.  And that's it for now...how I spent my summer vacation

Completed the repair of the bow and thinning the bulwarks, just a lot of sanding and putty work

    Hello All,

After a summer hiatus I'm back to the table with a new build.  The Harriet Lane from Model Shipways, I've always been intrigued by these type of vessel with the mixture of paddle power and sails, not really sure how practical they were but they look cool on the shelf!

Other builders here have done a fine job of inventorying the kit so I'll skip that and get right into the build.

This kit is a solid hull, a first for me, and after cutting out the kit provide templates the hull was marked out at the appropriate sections and the center line established.  I was surprised and pleased to see how close the rough hull was to the actual templates.

At this time I marked out the high spots where material will be removed and also set the bulwark width using a compass, as I've described in my other builds.

Next steps will be to get the rough hull into finished shape and dimension and thin the bulwarks down.

Pics follow, as always thanks for your time and attention
    J

Been awhile, I know.  I'm still sorting out some things while working on the planking.    Hopefully, that won't be too muich longer now that I have the stern planking figured out.

One of my "side" projects was to "re-learn" carving.  After a post here about it, and then I re-read Bill Shorts book and things started coming back as had done carvings on Licorne (not all but some).  Long story short... here's one of the carvings with the references.

First up is the stern plan showing the carvings.   Not the greatest I've seen but it's what I have to work with. Some of these are super tiny so I'll figure something out on them.

Next up are two photos from the Web...  Both show the same carvings but different approaches and thus what they looked like.   It should be noted that these are all 1:48 builds. They both seem to be pretty "flat" with not much depth and there's differences in what the builder saw in the plans.

And here's mine.  It's best I can do.  This is one at the very top. It's (I think) a bird with the lantern post coming out of it's mouth.  Go figure, right?   That's a penny (American) underneath it.  The carving is about 1.75 cm (less than 0.75 in) overall.  From here, except for the Arms of France, the carvings get smaller.  I don't think I'll be able to put any real detail into them.  And that dark spot on the extreme tip of the left wing seems to be shadow as it's not on the carving.

Back to the shop until next time.  I'm doing carvings while waiting for glue to dry on the planking or for inspiration on problem solving.

I should add, I thought about photo etch and even having 3D printing done but cost is big factor with 3D and I think my carvings will be better than photo etch.  Ah... hope still springs forth internally.
