Chamfering Cutting Tool
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Hi Allan, Thanks for the reply. So after bending , you fit and scrape each plank by hand for the “up close and flush” fit? -
Hi All, The planking on the Lady Nelson is going about like I suspected… first build and all. I am using the “Chuck” method of bending (you should patent that 😄). Got the planks to lay down flat on the frames, but there is still a tiny step. I know sanding will take care of this. I’m guessing the tool is a “gimmick”? Anyone use it or tried it?

Thanks Kirby, Kinds words. Actually building a guitar is kinda like building any model (just larger). The real trick is to get it to sound like something when your done. Got 2 more planks on today… figured out I had to bend the wood the other way at the bow. If I better the 3rd plank yet some more, I’ll be happy. Every one is a challenge to get it as correct as possible.

Thank you Lyle! I have the half hull project… can’t really explain why I started the ship first… I did not do the string thing, but I am now. Super building tip, thank you! Your half hull is beautiful.

Hello Brett, Welcome! I have found pictures to be very important (along with some narrative) when showing your work or needing help with a building issue. Cheers!

OK... I got the first 2 planks on. I'm pleased that I go t them on and all but 2 of the frames are nice and flat on the frames. The first 2 frames are going to be "stepped" and have to be filled and sanded. Delema... Side bend first, but the bow still needs to be curved. The way I see it is the bow needs some sort of a "twist" to get all surfaces laying flat and maintain the curvature of the bow. [Advice needed here] Kind of concerned about the aft end as well. That bend to the last frame is a dinger.

Hi Guys, Building guitars meant soaking wood and bending with heat (by hand or in a bending jig), so I know what soaking wood is all about. Just not necessary with the size of wood we’re using here (my opinion). I’ve got a spray bottle and the one plank I did cut and broke didn’t go to waste. I did bend it (I.e. Chuck method), worked fine and found all that is necessary is a couple drops of water smeared on the plank with your finger. So the plan for today is to get at least one plank on the ship, maybe one on the opposite side too. 🙂

Kirby, When you use the gel, how are you holding the planks in place? Pins?

Good Morning Everyone, A couple posts ago, I mentioned there are several ways to accomplish the task. I am brain fatigued studying this thing called "planking". 😑 I'm studying the "Lining Off your hull for planking". The model used in the publication lines off and has 4 "belts". This looks to be quite a bit larger ship than my Lady Nelson. What is your recommendation for the number of belts; 2, 3? Step 3 & 4 loose me completely (the whole fan template thing). Can anyone explain this to me? Remember, this is my 1st build. I get the whole "no stealers or drop planks". I have watched several videos and most all end up with stealers and dropped planks.

Working for a company that always preached safety…. Today I was carving in a rabbit on my Lady and I found myself carving a square blade knife into the keel with my hand directly behind it. Slip and instant insertion of exacto blade into my hand. I’m very aware of the easy ways you can loose fingers and injure your hands in this modeling hobby. Thank you for the thread! Think as you work.
