  1. Hi from frosty Western Washington (We're not used to this), I'm ready to go, I get out the hull planks and for the fun of it measure some widths. I have a low of 5.03mm to a high of 5.20mm and every thing in between. I am trying to eyeball them square in the calipers. Is this variation in width anything to be concerned with when laying out things? Can I generalize and say my planks are 5mm?
  2. Excellent Start! You’re way beyond “start” actually. 😀 Did you make all the filler blocks to aid in the first planking? Do the instructions say anything about this or is the a model ship builders trick?
  3. Very Nice! Please let us know what you think of the Ocre kit quality and instructions/drawings as you go along.
  4. Hi All, Newbie question. Is there a chart somewhere that would show what the sizes for blocks, tackle, rope etc would be for a particular scale (1:64, 1:48 etc)? I’ve seen much discussion about kit parts that are not to scale. I’ve often wondered if the blocks on some models weren’t just a tad large.
  5. Hi Brian, Welcome to the forum. I lived in Orange Park North next to NAS Jax back in the 80s. Good times!
  6. I had the error message twice last week, then on the 3rd attempt it loaded. Just had the error message while trying to use my I pad to take the picture and go directly to the site. No go. Took the picture with my phone, loaded the picture onto computer and then dragged it into the thread (my Lady Nelson) and it worked fine.
  7. Hi All, Here is the latest. I think the next step is to start planking. I've been researching and reading everything I can and like so many other things, looks like there are several ways to accomplish the task. Straight away, I can honestly say, I'm not doing the pins and nails method. Don't want to start a side bar here here on the topic of planking, but as I proceed, I will use this thread to get opinions and advice as I go.
  8. Hi Bob, Welcome. Good place to be for anything ship building. I’m at the opposite end of the country, Washington state, 37 and rainy. Stay warm.
  9. Thanks Guys, I see the difference. There is a place for the "rings", however not like I thought. I will study some of the completed work on the site. I have seen there can be much "rigging" done for a single cannon. The Amati instructions and the Lady Nelson video build show a very simple rigging. Time to study.
  10. Suppose this is as good a thread as any to ask some more questions regarding the cannons. I have 20 LITTLE brass rings that get attached to the side of the cradle. Super glue I assume is the method? How many times do you accidentally break them off while doing rigging?
  11. Hi Everyone, It hasn't taken me long to see that I'm quickly liking the "kit bashing" I've been reading about. Some day I may scratch build, my gut tells me no. However, I'm already seeing the advantages to "kit bashing", i.e. better woods, better and more detailed parts, quality of materials etc.. What are some of your best "go-to" places for wooden ship building materials and supplies?
  12. Outstanding Discussion! I'm going to get a caliper that has a multiple readout. I have many scales and rulers, all of drafting quality, and I find the metric side of the house much easier to maneuver in. AND, many of my new friends reside in regions of the world where metric is the game. Trying to stay with US Standard inches and convert to metric is just asking for a foul up in my mind. 😄 Thank you all for your most excellent input!
  13. Welcome Jimmy! 🙂
  14. Welcome aboard Rock. Ex-Navy man here. You’ve picked the best place to come to jump into this hobby!
  15. Thank you all for the offers. I'll stick with what Amati put in the kit this time. As I study the forum and see everyone's beautiful work, I'm making a list of things I think I'll want to "bash" on my next project (cannons will probably be on the list). I have a long way to go... need to cut my teeth with the Lady.
  16. I guess I spoke too soon as the main cannons ARE bored. However as seen in the photo, the castings are so inconsistent, only 3 out of 9 were OK and I was short 1 main cannon. 😐
  17. Hey Keith, No don’t have a pin vice… yet. I jut got done detailing the swivel guns, i.e. getting rid of any flashing and serious mold lines. I think they will look fine after the blackening process. Y’all don’t laugh, but I know I just tried what many have… holding the cannon with one hand and tried to use a pin drill… 😆. I’m going to assume the hand drill and tiny bits are pretty much useless on this brass. What do you use for the drill?
  18. It’s an Amati kit. The muzzle end of the cannons have a big casting lug on them, some large enough to clip off with a cutter, then file down the rest to be a flush muzzle end. Don’t know that I dare try to drill out a bore on these tiny things.
  19. Hello Everyone, Tonight decided to “work” on the guns of the Lady Nelson. UNDER the magnifying glass you can see mold lines. I was able to scrape those off and clip/file any flashing off and file down the big nub at the muzzle. How far do you go to detail these tiny things? I’m thinking after I prep them and paint them, the paint will hide most casting imperfections, no? Does anyone go as far as try to drill out a little bore?
  20. Model "what"? 1/2 scale stuff? 😄 Looks like a full blown wood shop, something we had in high school back in the day.
  21. I have a Dremel model 395 type 5, 5000 - 30,000 RPM. The variable speed is real, not simply 5 different speeds.
  22. Some really deep thinking going on here. Thanks. 😳
  23. Greetings All, Merry Christmas to all! I am retiring in 10 days. I am currently building the Lady Nelson. I have a cash reserve before retirement and think I should get something on the shelf while I have the scratch. Was considering the Coldercraft HMS Badger or the Brig Supply, Manitua Endeavor or Shine, Amati Bounty or Fly. I'm looking forward to a build that is not beginner, and will take awhile and not break the bank. I am all tooled up and can only foresee consumabales like paint, glue and blades. Comments regarding the manufacturers and ships would be appreciated. Dave
  24. Thanks Kirby, I have studied all the build logs for the LN (including yours) 🙂. How is your coming along?
  25. Some serious ship yard work goin on here! 😀 The Amati instructions are so bad that quite frankly, without the forum and the build logs, I could see how a novice would just given up in short order.
