Spent a couple days doing the cannons, more on these in my "1:64 Cannon Detail" post over in furnishings. Now I guess it's back to construction and planking. 😄

1:64 cannon detail
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
How Do Everyone, I think with the help of our friend Henrythestaffy in Australia, we have cannage. 😁 He supplied these beautifull 3D works of art for me. I thought I'd leave well enough alone and not go dabbling any further with this first build on the cannons. The painting under a magnifyer was a new experience, wasn' too bad actually. Of course later on comes the rigging. I will probably keep it basic. Thanks for all the help here. -
Old Montgomery Ward Model Kit worth building?
Dave_E replied to kwaheltrut's topic in Wood ship model kits
I’d keep the kit… you have an antique of the modeling world. Buy a beginner wooden ship model and get into it if you want. My .02. -
I opened my first jar of Admiralty Paints yesterday and was using some dull black on a cannon and noticed how fast this stuff was setting up. I found Paul's post and painted 10 cannon carriages today. The good woman of the house provided all the utensils and WOW. The thinned paint (not too thinned) stayed workable and fluid for 45 minutes while I worked on the carriages. THANK YOU PAUL! 👍

Welcome Andrew, this is the place! 🙂

I don’t know anything about the “card” side of ship modeling. I’m pulling up a chair to see how it’s done, (no pressure). 😁

1:64 cannon detail
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Hi All, Good as a place as any to continue the detail topic. The cradles that come in the Amati kit are cast (pot metal) perhaps and have a coating on them, some sort of varnish or lacquer. You can see it under a magnifying glass very plainly. I was going to try and paint the carriage red and the wheels black. Do I need to remove this coating before attempting to paint? If so, how? If no, what type of paint should I use, enamel or acrylic? Again, being my first ship, I could just leave them alone… 🤔 Am I wrong assuming cannon parts in better kits are actually wood? -
OK, here we go. The anchors are done, might as well continue with the entire ship. 🙂 I've decided there are things about this first kit that I just have to let go and get one done. I think the metal "wood stock" looks better brown than if I'd have left it alone. The rings were my first attempt with the Birchwood Casey black. Works pretty good, except it does scratch off easy. Port side Starbord side. Wood filler is an amazing tool... one I'd rather not have to use. I have promised myself this. On the starbord side I experimented with CA filler. Don't like the way it sands, won't do that again. In the following 2 photos you will see how the garboard plank (did I say that correctly) is proud onto the keel. Suggestions on how or what to do about it before starting the second planking? I'm starting to like those ship models I see that put the keel in AFTER planking. OK boys and girls... be gentle. 😁

Adding sails to a model ship (in my opinion) is an art in itself. I haven’t heard the term yet “model ship sail maker”, but I think it’s a warranted title. Superb work!

Hi Bug, Crazy good work! I’m new to the site and just found your log. Question for you. Way back when you got started, why did you do so much deck work etc. instead of moving right into the hull planking? Was it the instructions or your experience that motivated the direction you took? Like your work and am going to watch, especially when you get into the rigging. I have contemplated this ship for a future endeavor.
