    Hi Ed,

thanks for looking in and for your nice compliment. I was stuck a bit in the winch fabrication, lifeboats and vents, and sorting out the related design, so there is not much progress on the basic model, but following your wish, I`m happy to show the present state (pics taken  this afternoon )

    Showing the flag
As a little brake in sail 'stitching' I made and set the flag.

Pickle probably started her marine life under the blue ensign while being on the Jamaica station but apparently all ships present at Trafalgar flew a white ensign.
So, a white ensign it had to be and of course the one used after 1800 with the cross of St Patrick included.

I hand painted (here I really was glad that the Welsh dragon was never included in the union jack) the flag on the same but untreated cotton I use for the sails. The inaccuracies of the painter will hopefully be masked by the folds of the flag, hanging almost limp in a very light breeze.

I wasn't sure if I would have to set it on the windward or lee side but opted for the first as the view onto starboard will be the favoured one with the sails set for the expected breeze from this side.
Both running ends of the flag line are therefore belayed on the starboard side.

both sides of the flag are hand painted

An update who is not a update.......

I have to take all the shrouds down and make them again....
    Why ?
Because there are to many mistakes on them.
I served the wrong one ( only one I have served because my rope server is broken )
That's why I also not served the stay's.....
The snake is not what I want....it looks clumsy.
The rope that I used for the shrouds  get there are snap strands ( I use google translation for that snap strands....I hope it is correct )
So I removed all of it and will do it again.
Ordered rope at Morope and ordered a new rope server by the Syren company.....
When there is an update again I will show you .
For now....have a nice day and I will be working again !

You guys are going to make this decision for the next ship hard, aren't you?         And I thought it would just be a simple decision.. Roebuck or something French like L'Orient.   I figure why not go for tough ones....

John, the Roebuck also juxtaposes with quite a few American ships according to the history, as I recall.

A bit of an update... the rudder is ready for hanging.  The macro shows the problems but in real life it looks pretty good to my eye.  I actually had another one made but it hit the floor without my knowing it.  The pup (hah!!!!  at 3 years old, not a pup but she thinks she is) picked it up, and gave it back with unfortunately some deep teeth marks.  I had to laugh as I call her "my helping bud".

Anyway, I've got blue taped into position while I sort out the irons attached to the hull.

As always, critiques, comments, or general mayhem is welcome.

"Almost" indeed Sjors. Thanks for showing interest.
Diana is far from completed : so I 'll alter ratlines with other fittings/stuff.

Although....there's little shipbuilding scheduled this WE.
The reason is simple : after a long period of almost ghastly weather ( rain, cold, grey,  wind..you name it) we're enjoying-finally-some sunny weather.
In that respect, I presume little difference between Bleiswijk and Zottegem ?

    Hello

Thanks to BE the problem related to the bowsprit cap is resolved

Rigging and mast part started with the shrouds :

I secured the shrouds near the mast top with Guterman thread col n° 36 (dark grey), as I wanted a little contrast with the black shrouds. Besides, the thread is rather thin which suites me fine as I wanted to avoid "sausages"

Same remark about the lanyards : they're supposed to be black but I went for something more pale. The only problem I encountered was the necessary small drop of glue : it affected the pale color, so I carefully overpainted with diluted light grey. I'll see about some extra trimming : I'd like to remove the protruding parts of thread as much as possible without damaging the knots

The thread I used for the shrouds is - regarding the thickness- a compromise. I did not use the one supplied in the box

Jesse - hope you're feeling better, your Syren is looking fantastic.
BE - glad to see you back in your new work area, jealous how clean and tidy it is

    Stem and Stern:
Planking seems to be never ending with all of the various ports, it seems there isn't one plank that can simply be
cut to length and glued in place, but at least I've been managing to get at least a couple done each day.  I've been spending quite  a bit of time trying to figure out two key elements...

The bow is coming together, and thankfully it seems my modifications to replace the cutwater and have a properly fitted bowsprit to haven't ended in disaster.  I needed to remove the filler block to allow the bow planking to be clamped in place and this was a delicate time, it strengthens quite nicely with the laminated layers, again I'm using PVA glue.

The bowsprit hole has been fine tuned and quite happy with the result.  Overall the modification added a lot of extra work, but I'm glad I did it.  The uppermost shape of the bow is more rounded which seems more intuitive and consistent with the AOTS diagrams, but differs from the kit which seems to be more 'pointy'.  Ray had identified that the bow cap rails in the kit ones are undersized means that these would need to be redone anyway.

I still finalizing the exact shape of the bow bulwark following the sheer, but this also seems to consider the angle of the foc's'le deck - will be leaving a little extra here to be cut back later based on what looks right.

The stern has had my head in swirls for some time.  There has always been something that bothered me with the kit pictures but I couldn't figure out why - the kits stern fascia seems too wide, too 'flat' and the stern lights too small and far apart.  After enlarging the diagram in the AOTS book I figured out what was up.  It seems that Caldercraft used the stern projection to shape the stern fascia without accounting for the vertical angle and lateral curve.  Estimating what this would be I cut out a card template to confirm the needed shape on the lower fascia and the upper counter.  This now seems much more in keeping with the needed curves.  A problem to deal with down the road at the PE lights, I think these made undersized vertically, again because they do reflect vertical foreshortening.  Glueing photocopies of the lights in place has made me wonder whether I'll be happy with these, because in addition the panes do no match the desired curve of the fascia or the vertical alignment of the hypothetical stern timbers....something to ponder some more.

Kit supplied fascia compared to AOTS diagram, the lower curves match perfectly even though they shouldn't...

Card template compensating for lateral curvature and vertical slope...

What these look like in place, much nicer in my opinion.

the winches are coming together quite well. Have meantime made out another two slightly different (narrower) looking winches on the boats deck, of which I unfortunately do`nt know the function....and there are only two of them on the entire boatsdeck

The officer´s hammocks have been prepared already for a long time ...     ... and some more petiteness like a small desk and a chair for Mr Rivers the gunner ...     ... some of the lumber to be seen on contemporary pictures: (under-)deck chairs and packages wrapped in sail cloth.     And immediately we have some homeliness in the smallest confinements  ...             ... and soon all is shipshape und Bristol fashion for coming Saturday in Augsburg :-)   Cheers, Daniel

    So... pushing the envelope...

I've reworked the rudder and added some metalwork.  It looks a lot better.    The metal banding will have the appropriate amount of nails in it before this piece is ready to mount.

Edit:  I forgot to add... I cut it apart using a thin jeweler's saw and then glued it back together using some colored glue.

And a couple of quick shots of the rudder irons/straps in work.  I started by annealing the straps.  I silver solder the tube, cut-off the excess, and clean it up with a file.  For the pintle, a 1/16" brass rod will be epoxied into the tube.  The cudgeon will not have the shaft, naturally.

I should note that these are not cleaned up yet.

So far, so good.  I've got a pile of brass pieces now pickling in some vinegar.   I'll rinse well and let dry overnight.  I'm thinking of using paint on these or hitting the local gunshop tomorrow for some Birchwood Casey's.  In testing, Blacken-It did nothing for the silver solder.  I've got some discards painted and drying and I'll how they look.

Humbrol paints were OK but I made the decision to move over to Acrylic paints and the A.V. (Acrilicos Valejo) brand deliver quality.

    Here's an overview

Regarding to the lifeboats : I can recommend the paint with ref n° 311 New Wood : it's -in my opinion- pretty close to the "wooden" look I was aiming for

    Hi Christian,

Looking really good mate. Glad you were able to get your cap sorted.

For getting really close to trim a knot try using nail clippers, the ones with the sprung lever, they work for me and you can get really close to the knot, a word of caution though, you can get too close and then it's that time when every woman learns to cover their ears.

    Hope that helps mate.
