The model showing the footropes in front of the sail is incorrectly rigged. Do not do that on yours. Like Marc said, their presence on ships like the Soleil Royal is debatable. I would have excluded them entirely, but it's your model. I believe reef tackles, if they were even present on this kind of ship, would be behind the sail. I can tell that lines 1117/1118 are the reef tackles for the course. However, if i were rigging the ship, i would go with my gut and lead them inboard on the yard, behind the sail, and have them fall to the deck somewhere around the mast.

If you want to reef, you would want to reef the main. Having the fore open to the wind would, if i understand correctly, lead to better sailing characteristics. That's why clippers didn't have lower stuns'ls on the main or mizzen.

One question: will you plank between the cap rail, stempost, and stem supports?

What!? How! Definitely a hellerism. They should be tied above the yard or at the actual last top, once again above the yard.

I have an idea that involves me stealing deadeyes from a different kit. I believe i have enough for this. Are round deadeyes okay? I figure it doesn't take much expertise, just a bunch of clove hitches. I will test this on the topmasts first.

I admit, i expected to use a lot more gold on this ship. The only gilded part of the ship is the swirly decorations on the lower part of the beakhead. If you look closely, you can see it in this image.

The lower masts, bowsprit, fighting tops, and aft boom are painted and temporarily fitted into place on the ship. I went to the hobby shop and got some less-than-stellar cleats, as well as some wire that will become hooks once we start rigging the lower mast fish tackles. Next on the list is to finalize whatever hull work has yet to be done, with the exception of the ladders as they come last, and then glue the masts in.

I would put the sheave hole just aft and up of the eyebolt to which the brace is tied. Maybe at the very aft end of the cap rail, and right beneath it. Belay it on a cleat, or better yet, a kevel.

Untie immediately. Rig the standing end of the braces to eyebolts positioned on the outside of the hull. Check my Galleon for now i did it.

I have even started gluing and fitting the lower masts. These will need to be painted before i can show them.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
