Well, not everything looks perfect, but I‘m very happy with the result. Next weekend I‘ll try to make some better photos for the gallery. I‘m satisfied with the kit and for this price the quallity of the kit supplied materials is good. It was always a great pleasure building this little schooner.

Im back home from vacation and finally had the chance to make some wood chips in the shop tonight!  YEA!!!

I have started working the basic hull shape and the shear into the blocks of wood, as you can see from a couple views she is starting to look like a Schooner.   (Boy that had me worried!)

Just a little update. I started on the cabin and capstans and located them temporarily on the deck. I’ll finish and paint everything before mounting them permanently. But it’s all coming together.

In trying to "make it right" I found so many differences between the photos of the Hoga and the drawings of the Nokomis that I put aside the drawings and am working from the photos now.  I find it interesting that between the launch on Dec 1st 1940 and showing up in Pearl Harbor on May 1st 1941 there were already changes made to the Hoga.  I am wanting to build it the way it was in Pearl Harbor but if I paint it all dark gray I’m afraid all the detail will be lost.  I’m thinking of painting it Light gray over dark gray.

    Open to suggestions.

Hi Jeff, I am very glad that you like my work. Today I´m posting last pictures from the production of hull - lanterns. This concludes the first phase of construction.

After a short break I will continue with production of masts, sails and rigging.

Well I thought I would just quickly update the results of my re-doing of the mizzen crowsfeet (and adding the crowsfeet on the main mast). Thanks to Alistair for the encouragement & BE for the tips on materials.

Now that this is figured out I can finally move ahead - first to the main topmast and then to the foremast shrouds & stays and on and on....

    Thanks John!

I'm now getting to that stage of the build where it's difficult to get decent photos....so the updates might be a bit sparser in the picture department.

Since the last update, I've done only a little bit. I've fitted the lower deadeyes for the main topmast shrouds and added sheer poles, futtock staves and futtock shrouds to mizzen and main masts. I've also added the jeers blocks to both fore and main masts (with the jeers seized into them). Tonight I also added the crowsfeet and crowsfeet tackle to the mizzen mast and stay. For my first attempt I feel ok about it, but I could certainly have done a better job. The 2mm blocks that Alistair sent are a good fit - and not too difficult to handle. But the tackle line itself I didn't get quite right and I have to practice making smaller seizings...As for the crowsfeet themselves, I made the mistake of using a thicker upholstry thread for them - slightly thicker than normal sewing thread and easier to handle. But now that I look at it, I feel that sewing thread would have looked a little better - I doubt, however, I will redo them at this point - it would involve a lot more than just redoing the crowsfeet.....

Making the euphroe block was a little difficult and the one I made for the mizzen is quite sharply out of scale. In the end I got a decent one starting with 1.5 x 4mm walnut. I drilled holes in the wood strip first and the using a sanding block I narrowed and thinned the wood to get a more or less appropriate shape...Again, I'm hoping the second time will improve the results. Here are a couple of shots of the recent progress. The shot of the crowsfeet does not show them in their best light, but I've fond it very difficult to get a good shot in focus.

Anyway, the build is really slowing down as we gear up for the new baby and work ramps up. I was initially hoping to have it finished by the baby's due date - November 24. This will probably not happen. But we are getting pretty excited about the new arrival. Enjoy the photos and happy modelling

Finally completed the carronade/cannon rigging. Next time, I would definitely like to work with some better line, both for visual result and ease of use.

On the cannons, I decided to stick with mounting the tackles to the aft most eye after trying a number of options. One thing that swayed me was looking at a picture of some cannon mounting which actually shows this method, there are examples in a few paintings as well, so I suspect it was done. This also allowed me to keep the hooks consistent across all armaments which I personally like.

Overall pretty happy, so a few pics to celebrate before moving on.
