Hi Galen, If your worried about brush strokes you could try using a foam brush. I had issues with the white as the black tends to bleed through so I just used a lot of white. I mostly used Acrylic on mine. Tip though I would paint the inside before getting to far into the deck going in. I forgot to do that on mine. After copper painting I had to varnish or else the paint on mine kept rubbing off. -

Thanks everyone for the replies, and information provided. I've gotten some rope and been practicing different knots so helpful to learn what I need to start with and then to learn about later.

Forgive me if this is posted somewhere as I've searched and didn't see anything listed. If someone can provide a link if already talked about that would be great. I love ship building, it's fun. I admit I'm not that good with knowing all the lingo on all the parts, but it's about the joy of learning. This could be a noob question sure, but if not asked I will never know and maybe other's can benift. The ships I build I never finish as I tend to stop at the rigging, more so as it can be intimidating, but there is also other problems I run into. I know how to tie a basic shoelace knot and that is part of a big problem, in which I would love to learn how to tie other knots. My question being, what knots are commonly used in tieing blocks/masts/deadeyes and such. Is it just one common knot used for most or good to utilize other knots, or just whatever I find that works, just do it? Thanks for any feedback!

Nice job so far! I remember the planking, and still have nightmares. Just take your time and if you don't have a bender, or steam bender I soaked mine in some hot water for a few to help with bending. Nightware came from the fact that they leave you thick lumber to plank with.

Ah this brings back memories. This was my first build. Since I've got to say compared to some of the other AL kits I've put together the book with pictures and instructions are realitively nice. Good luck on her! Look forward to seeing the progress.

Tilt the ship to the side and dry fit the gun ports in there respective positions. See if you like how they look. If it looks good glue them in place. Proper or not, it is your ship and can do with what you like. I didn't find anything wrong with doing mine that way and actually thing it turned out nice. Besides kept me from carving out the holes which I know you don't wanna do.

Just do what I did with the gun ports.. Glue them directly to the Hull. unless your going to have them open none will be the wiser.

I buy AL because of the price I can afford. The wood I've not had problems with the directions at times are laking but its a reason for me to learn more by research. If I wanted it easy I'd find me a paint by number kit. I still have some velvet paint by number pictures around here someplace.

Hi Robbyn if you where trying to attach a stained item to a polyed item it's not going to adhere properly as mentioned by other's. Stained wood will adhere to stained wood just not to polyed. You can take a knife and remove the poly from the area your trying to adhere to, or just mare it to get a better adhesion. Just my two cents.

Nice little paddle boat. I loved seeing them when I crossed the Mississippi river everyday going to school years ago. Will keep an eye on this build, might be interesting to do myself.

Hi Bill. I'm going to get to the Pinta, and Nina eventually when money permits, but for now I'm just chugging along with the Maria. I've started the planking and will have pictures posted soon.

Current progress. In the last pic does anyone know if the Bulwarks sits as low as it is on the bulkhead or does it fit higher? Luckly if it needs to be adjusted I haven't permently put it in place yet.

I just started the Santa Maria by Al and figured I would start another build log. My computer blew up on me so I have to RMA my motherboard or else I would post pictures. As soon as I can though I will get pictures put up. In the mean time I had a question. I've tried searching through what pictures I could find of any that where building her but couldn't find many. Is the deck being attached to the bulkheads suppose to have a significant bow in the middle of it? To me it doesn't look right but I could be wrong. Hate to get far into the build only to find out it is wrong.

What I did for mine is soak then bend around a can like a corn can then clamp till dry. Once dry its easier to form around the hull and nail/glue in place. Butting the head of a tack in the keel helps hold in place as well.

In the previous forums there was a thread for thread. I didn't see it reposted but interested in the links that where provided for purchasing of better quality thread. Or the types of threads those use for rigging and such.

Second layer is looking good. The strips your using appear pretty thin so the tap may be holding good. You can try push pins to hold strips in place if you haven't already.

Im not sure if this belongs here and if not im sorry. I'm currently working on Midwests Sharpie Shooner and in the directions it has to color the lines just dip in coffee. Thing is I don't have coffee. Yes I'm not a coffee drinker. I do drink tees which got me to thinking. What other household items can be used to dye string? How long would you leave it dipped for?
