Sjors reacted to Patrick Haw in HMS Victory by Patrick Haw - Caldercraft - Scale 1/72
As I mentioned in a previous post. it's amazing that Caldercraft doesn't include in the plan sheets a drawing showing the exact placement of the yellow/black bands, you just get four very poor quality and disjointed photographs in the manual. And those potos were taken of the completed model with much of the detail of the paintwork obscured by head rails, gun port lids, chains, etc.  I spent a lot of time poring over photos of the actual ship as well of many of the other fine Victory builds in here to make my best shot at replicating the "Nelson chequer".  Again, much of the detail on pictures of the actual ship are obscured, especially at the bows, so being able to look at other Victory builders' work in progress before the addition of head rails, etc. was invaluable.  Even then, everybody has their own slight differences on the exact location of the yellow/black bands.

One thing that helped me is realizing that the ship is actually black with yellow bands, not yellow with black bands.  Of course we all start off with a yellow hull because it's easier to paint the black on over the yellow, but once I focused on the location of the yellow bands, it became a bit easier for me. I used Admiralty Paints Matt (Metal) Black (AP9106W) rather than the recommended Dull Black (AP9105W) because I don't like the sheen on the Dull Black, and it's my ship!

So, here is my version of the Nelson chequer.  I'm happy with the result and even happier that she's now starting to look like Victory, rather than a mess of wood, glue and filler!

Next up, lining the gun ports.

    Patrick

    Hi Guys,

Mort, Grant & Jeff, Thank you so much for your very kind words, coming from you guys it's a real compliment.

As requested some pics of the boats sitting in position on the boat beams, they are not fixed yet because I need to get to some cavel cleats on the gun deck.

The boats are in their correct position and order so all that's needed to fix them is a spot of glue on the cradles.

I have now moved the Aggy out of the workroom because I am going to be making sawdust, I don't want to have to be cleaning her up because she's covered in the stuff. I could just cover her but when wielding long sticks about some damage may occur.

The length of the Lower Main Mast is 465mm, the overall height of the Main Mast is going to be 974mm off the ship.

That's it for now gents, thank you again for your kind comments.

Had a fantastic night at the theatre last night with The Admiral
    Solid Gold Sixties 50th Anniversary
    Celebrating 1963
I was 13 at the time but the music was something else
Some of you may not remember some of these groups but we saw.  The Fortunes, The Searchers, Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes (Chesneys father) from the Tremeloes, P J Proby and headlining Gerry and the Pacemakers
    Absolutely fantastic

I was so up I managed a bit of work today and finished the Foremast yards

Completely done now and ready to fit
I have also made a start on the main mast making the top and shaping the lower mast

I get the paint for the guitar Monday I hope and then I will be concentrating on that for a bit
Once I actually start painting it shouldn't take long as the paint and laquer system is made to work together and coats can be laid down 15 minutes apart
The guitar is about ready for painting
Took a lot of work but I think I am there
It is difficult to tell without laying a coat of paint on there

That four lettered word WORK has reared its ugly head again... I have had very little time to play in the last couple of weeks so building has slowed to a crawl. Finished manufacturing my chain plates and if my crews will leave me alone this morning I plan to blacken them today. I made a rough template out of card stock to determine the approximate location and rake, once the masts are in place and I can finalize their locations I will pin them in place.

My rope came in a few days a ago from Chucks Syren company. Too lazy to go back over my posts but if I didnt mention it earlier he delivered several days before he promised them. I think I actually received them the day before he told me they  would ship! Thanks Chuck!!

Thursday night I tried tying on the rope to the stern gun ports, a knot looked horrible so I tried seizing them with 2 lb fishing leader, looks better than the knot but still not "right". Theoretically I will get over to a fabric store today and pick up some dark brown thread and see how that looks. I can see already I have complicated my life by not doing this on the bench before installing the transom. Oh well, live and learn!

    The next step,
”Rails” this was going to be a bit more tricky.
These are not straight and the gratings and frames are determining the arc, so again I decided to test my skills on the jigsaw..

But this time I used my latest investment.
    TaaDaa!this is it

I decided to copy the rails provided and use these as the basic shape with the intensions to “fine tune” them to the final arc and length needed.

I also thought a bit about the wood grain direction..
My first thought was “vertical” as the rails on the model bend mostly in this direction so I didn’t had to shape them into their position.
But on the other hand I knew that choosing this direction the wood also would/could easily snap
..I decided for “vertical” anyway and see how it goes..

Even dough the new tool does its job very well it is still not as easy as I thought it would be..
So a lot of sanding helped to get the "straight line" end result

The instructions/drawings doesn’t really show where the starting positions of the rails are located:--
I decided to use the most upper strake as the start position for the top rail, the second rail just besides the first gun frame and the davit bracket and the 3th rail “as best as possible”
To avoid too much stress on the top rail I shaped the Samson post with an angle.

I must admit that some of the rails have snapped (some even several times) during installation..
Eventually I managed to have all rails in place and I covered all the break lines with glue and sawdust..
    Enjoy ....

It takes still a little bit more then 116 months before I'm retired, I can do something in the spare hours that I have left……
    The mast are done.
Everything is dry fit, so I can put all the stuff that's need on to the mast.
And no, not the shrouds and ratlines after that.
There is also a bowsprit that I have to do.
When that is done, I can go to the fun part

    Hi Guys,

Wow, I never expected a response like this, makes me feel so very humble, thank you all for the kind words.   :)

Popeye,    All the boats have been lashed to their cradles and will be positioned on the beams, none of the boats are stowed on top of another, I don't have a photo at the moment but I will take one with them in position. With regard to the oars I found the specifications which fits all sizes,

Outboard Length is 1.25 x the Beam of the Boat
Length inboard is      .35 x the Beam of the Boat
Length of Blade is     .30 x the Length of the Oar   This also includes the blade housing on the shaft
Width of Blade at Tip         Six Inches ( 6" )
Diameter of Shaft       1/48 Length of the Oar

As the beam is different on all the boats they are all slightly different in length. I did cheat when making the blades, I cut them from card and trimmed when the oar was complete. Hope that makes sense mate.

Keith,     There is no historical colour scheme for any of the boats, I just thought the Pinnace would be used by the Captain or senior officer and so should be different from the rest, I quite like the colour though. I have thought about giving mine to some poor unsuspecting person but I don't know if I could inflict that much pain on anybody, if I tried they would probably ask for the monitory value instead.

John ( Jim Lad )    The boats will be placed as recommended in the manual, I haven't put them on yet as there are Cavel Cleats below on the gun deck and I will need to get to them when rigging, with the boats on that would be virtually impossible.

Wayne,   I think I understood what you were saying, thank you.     :D

Frank,   Sjors is over his ailment now and has put a bit of weight on, I don't think the little boats would do the job.

Augie,   Your not wrong about the time it takes to knock  these little ones out, I suppose I've been working on them for the last  2 - 3 weeks, not continuously because life gets in the way plus I've had side projects as well, of the construction type for he who cannot be named.

Sjors,   Sorry mate their stopping here, no more room in the case.

Hamilton, Pierre & Jim,   Thanks guys for your very kind words.

Updates for this week have been good. I managed to get most of the stern area decorated, and the outside of the hull is nearly complete!

Starting with the stern galleries complete with the steel mesh that imitates the windows:

Next I installed the rudder, along with the chains.

I then moved onto the back of the stern:

And complete with blue steel mesh for windows:

Lastly I added the brass lanterns at the top of the stern:

    Thanks for watching

I will keep them straight with the shrouds, then I can play a little with the tension of the lanyards.
Enjoy your evening out with the music of the sixties

    Yes Augie,

    It's another avatar.
This is also in a bus but then at Portsmouth when we are there with Mobbsie and Grant

    And also a little update.
    The bowsprit has shaped.
    And dry fit on it.
Now it is time to put all the blocks and violin blocks, deadeyes and all that stuff on it.
    Also placed the figure head.
And the last picture of the whole ship with everything on it ( dry fit )
