Well, it's certainly been a long time between drinks, but I've actually been getting some work done on the 'Meteor'. Not a heck of a lot, as the museum has had a lot of visitors, and we spend quite a bit of our time talking to them - but at least she's now heading in the right direction again. There might be another hiccough on the way with this model as the museum is currently talking to me about completing a major restoration on a model. I've tentatively agreed on the basis that the work is done in the museum where visitors can enjoy it - more to come after another meeting with the curator on Monday week. If that restoration happens, I may bring the 'Meteor' home so that I can at least keep working on it when I have time. In the meantime, here are a few photos of the model as she is at the moment. If you can calculate the scale of your arrangement plans you have the funnel size, mate, as you have both side and front views. john

What a good-looking launch melissa - and an obvious one for you to build. I think the materials are very much a matter of what appeals to you, but I might be tempted to try ply for the hull skin - that's what the original were built from. You can find very thin good quality ply at some aircraft modelling shops. The frame could be anything you have to hand, provided it works well and is stable. I look forward to seeing your progress. A totally different concept of tiller rigging. On the pearling luggers of Thursday Island (Torres Strait, Northern Australia), the boats were steered by the tiller rigging rather than by the tiller itself. The photo below was taken on the lugger 'Sydney', and shows the system in operation. John

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
