Kurt Johnson got a reaction from Saburo in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Syren Ship Model Company - 1:48 scale
BE, What is the number of the Admiralty plan for the Surly/Cheerful? I'd love to get one. I can find there listings for the Surly/Cheerful at the NMM site and none is the one you have. They have a inboard profile, outboard expansion and deck plan. Is it possible it was discontinued?

BE, Thanks. I placed my order. I searched for that print as cutter 1806, Surly and Cheerful an number of times and it never showed. It's funny that it isn't listed with the other 3 prints.

Hey Keith,
No don’t have a pin vice… yet. I jut got done detailing the swivel guns, i.e. getting rid of any flashing and serious mold lines. I think they will look fine after the blackening process. Y’all don’t laugh, but I know I just tried what many have… holding the cannon with one hand and tried to use a pin drill… 😆. I’m going to assume the hand drill and tiny bits are pretty much useless on this brass. What do you use for the drill?

Kurt Johnson got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in covering board/margin plank
I have a question concerning making up margin planks or covering boards for a schooner from 1850. Would the joints be scarfed or butt joints. In this diagram from Chapelle's Boat Building page 321 it would appear that a butt joint would be appropriate, especially with a nibbed deck. Would this be appropriate for 1850?

Steve, Its looking good! I was always partial to this kit. It really builds up nicely. I have one kicking around, but it has the usual warps and twists. I even ordered some “good” plywood to replace things but it came warped too. I have to see if I can straighten it out. It got me thinking of the old days when plywood was plywood. I took a picture of a planking clamp I made years ago from 5/8” birch ply from Ace hardware. It has twelve layers to it!! Of course I had to walk 10 miles in three feet of snow in bare feet to get it. Or maybe that was going to school, I forget.
Maybe I can talk Chuck into making a 3/16 or 1/4 inch version of it.

Ekis,
Do you have any future plans to build a stand alone building such as the seigneurial dwelling say in a larger scale, like maybe 1/50? That would be something grand to see. Or have you got the “building of buildings” bug out of your system and now is the time for something completely different? I’m sure we all would follow whatever comes next.

Ekis,
Truly wonderful. You never answered one of my questions. Is there an area of the village or a particular structure that you are most pleased with or that you saved from disaster? The entire project must have been a rewarding one for you. It was certainly an enjoyable one for us despite those guys hanging from the rafters.
