Jerry got a reaction from Dimitris71 in VIKING SHIP DRAKKAR By Jerry - FINISHED - Amati Scale 1:50
    Hello everyone..

Well, I began building the Viking Ship the last day of April and I'm happy to say that on this first day of June the Drakkar, except for mounting it in a display base, has been completed.  I sincerely enjoyed this build for a few reasons.  Of course I must admit, compared to the other ships I have built, this one was the easiest.  Afer all, in only took about a month to build.  The hull was far from simple but the rigging allowed the construction of this build to go quickly.  I enjoyed the challange of the clinker hull  (lapstrake) since it taught me another method i have never experienced.  When handling the 30 shields I felt as if I was sifting through antique Viking coins and that I was momentarily wealthy; and,  so all in all I'm looking forward to mounting the display and getting on to something new.  I will make one last post after I return from my holiday of two weeks when I hope to have the ship properly mounted.  Here are some pictures of the model with its dragonhead and shields mounted in place.

    My best to you all,
    Jerry

Many thanks Lawrence and Bernadette for remembering my birthday.  It's been very hectic around these parts for a few weeks with medical issues but all is well that ends well.  I sincerely appreciate your good wishes and look forward to a long friendship with you two.

Hello to my encouragers.  I started gluing the frame, then ran into some fit problems with the reinforcement pieces, so thank goodness for the scroll saw in the garage.  Also had to cut notches for two of the masts.  I am waiting for glue to dry and my master builder's approval before i go further.  I am ready for my "novice" badge now that I've actually started doing something irreversible.  I've included photos to commemorate this big day.

My pleasure, Dominic..I thought about sending you a picture of the fiished hull but the display case won't let me get a decent shot.  However, as I mentioned, check my log, page 3...

    Hello Dominic..
I just checked the whales on my Victory and they don't look any different than yours.  Of course the hull has the black stripes on it but from what I can tell yours look perfect.  That's just my opinion; it'll be interesting to hear what others have to say.  If you'd like, check out my log...

Good to see the latest photos, Don.  I really like your color scheme of the hull.  We're at a standstill as the admiral just returned from having some surgery and we'll have to wait for some futher recovery before she can get going again.  She does have some of the first planking strips attached but needs some filler block work before she can do any more.  It's hands off for me as this is her build and all i'm allowed to do is "coach."
Anyway, keep going with your beautiful work.

    Hello Glenn.
I know exactly how you must feel.  Also I'll bet David knows too.  My Victory actually fell off its table once and the bow was smashed in several places.  Like you, I had a long cry and then went about seeing what I could do.  I had to rebuild several of the bows and many lines and their blocks and after a few hours or so, the ship was as good as before.  And of course, you heard about breaking the pointy thing (bowsprit).  Probably broke that a half dozen times too.  And there was the tip of the main mast.  But all's well that ends well as you know.  And it will be the same with you.  Thanks for your nice comment, I sincerely appreciate that.  Hope you get your parts soon so you can be back in business.

I'm posting a couple more pictures....I just finished planking the stern and here they are.

    Hello Everyone..
The first two rows of planking strips have been glued to the frame.  Some people probably won't agree with my method of soaking the wooden strips but I have never had a problem with the way I do it.  I actually leave he strips in a bottle of water until I'm ready to apply one.  The wood has never deteriorated and is very easy to bend.  So, my next endeavor will be to prepare the gunport blocks and glue them into place.  Happy evening to everyone.

    Jerry

    Good evening everyone.
Here's a little more progress in my build of the Half Moon.  I still have some trimming and sanding to do but the presses were closing for the day so I figured I'd better post these photos.  Have a great evening one and all.

    Good morning, David....
and many thanks for your visit and comments.  Yes, I am lucky to have the ability to eavesdrop on a few excellent logs of the Half Moon.  Don't forget Anja's contribution, a build log of substantial value.  I'm taking nothing for granted with this project as what you say is true.  This hull will not be covered with 1600 copper plates as the HMS Victory's hull,  I imagine a neat planking job is a must and I am proceeding at a much slower pace than when building Victory.  I probably will begin the aforementioned planking in a couple of days or so and am puzzled by the thickness of the strip wood used for the initial covering.  Using strips 1.5mm thick is something new for me and my first thoughts are about flexibility.  But as you say, others have used the same material with excellent results.  I believe one plus in using strip wood this thick is its ability to take a push-pin without splitting.  I'll be using my usual method of soaking the material for about 24 hours which usually helps bending it without breaking it.  I'm in the process of shaping and adding the deck beams which I expect to finish today, along with the quarterdeck, poopdeck and forecastle.  This should bring me to the initial hull planking.  A few photos of my progress follows.

    Hello Everyone...

It didn't take me as long as I expected to finish my HMS Victory by Jotika but I am blessed with a lot of time on my hands.  I started her in February of 2013 and wrapped her up last month, November, 2014. Please see below....

Although I am still waiting for the display case in which to place Victory, I have decided that sitting around watching television or playing on-line poker is just not fulfilling so I decided to start another kit.  I was lucky to pick up Corel's Half Moon by being the winning bidder on EBay a week or so ago and after spending the last couple of evenings looking over the plans, instruction booklet, kit, etc., I began construction today.  I feel very fortunate that others have written build logs on this site for I'm sure I'll need them badly for reference.  Half Moon will be my third wooden boat build as I have also built the Cutty Sark about 15 years ago which I see every day sitting in her display case inside the entrance to our home.

So here is the beginning of my new log and I hope it will be helpful to anyone that wants to use it.

One good thing about pictures....they speak for themselves:  Please place your mouse over the picture for a caption.

Hello Dominic.. Just to add to the chorus,  I had the same problem.  I had to remove a couple of MM from the bottom of the starboard side bulwarks.  Seems to me that Caldercraft  (Jotika) has a design problem.  Your planking looks great by the way.

    Hello Dennis...
Quite a  bit of difference between Corel and Billings.  I really like the railings at the rear of the foredeck.  Your build is coming along way way nicely.  I haven't mentioned it before but i also love your color combinations.  Looking forward to watching for more.

    Jerry
