Holly is not difficult to come by.  But really good Holly is impossible to find.  You know the stuff.

Its the stuff you remember being able to buy oh so many years ago.  Even the bad stuff around now is super expensive.

We have located and secured a decent sized batch of Holly billets of various size from an old supply.  Like finding a barn find of an old Mustang Bullet.

They are super white and beautifully clear.   Only a few tiny knots spaced far apart on a few billets.  No blue or green streaks.  We have these available for strips and such immediately.  Please email me or PM me for a quote on what you need.  You wont be disappointed.  While supplies last.

Vanda-Lay treenail maker - Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck - Model Ship World™

I have all three cutters they used to make. The smallest one is very difficult to use, the hardwood tends to break during cutting. The other two work OK, if you carefully use hardwood, like cherry, maple, pear, and the best of all - boxwood. I successfully made lots of treenails, also used an extension tube to cut them longer.
But, if you want to make your treenails from bamboo, it is better to use a drawplate. Bamboo has long and strong fibres that tolerate firm pulling.
If however you want to make your treenails from hardwoods, the treenail maker works better  - because you're pushing the wood, not pulling (provided that the cutter size is correct for your scale).

I think the window of opportunity is lost concerning that kit. It could had rided on the wave and popularity of the Hollywood movie, but too much time has passed now.

Luckily, I got to see the movie ship in San Diego when I was there on a business trip back in 2012.

The model is, however, not the "Surprise" we know from the movie "Master and Commader".
I took the pictures in San Diego, April 2006.

Just THINK how far computer graphics has changed over the last 5 or 10 or 20 years or so. When I started with computers this was just a dream. Look what you folks have done. Of course, I started with punch cards and tape.
    VERY GOOD!
If you go back and view your 1st image, LOOK how much better your image looks.
    WAY TO GO!

42rocker reacted to Kurtis in 74 Gun | Ship of the Line - 3rd Rate | Blender
I've modelled a '32 pounder' that'll sit on the bottom deck! I've nicknamed this 'the beast!'

The wall in the second photograph is temporary (the grass is just a photograph overlayed the model which is why it looks like it's floating as well). I'm aiming now to shrink the carriage and gun down to meet the size requirements for the middle deck. I'm trying to decide whether to shrink them down a third size for the top gun, or model a dedicated carronade for the top deck.

Looking at the ship plans, I'm not dreading them masts and sales as much as I was because it's mostly just reusing those tackles that I built for this cannon!

Bear in mind  that my ship has up to 9 modifiers on 95% of the objects (arrays, curves, edgesharps, subsurfs, etc). I've disabled subsurf on most most of them and turned on wireframe for most visible objects (that way the model isn't littered with lines). Some of the objects will look a little disjointed though. Creating wireframes for my models is never easy, but I hope you like this one.

I do try to keep my poly-count low, my workflow essentially prioritises creating the general shape, and then letting modifiers (and lattices in places in this example) to create the rest of the shape. There are setbacks to this approach, but I find there's not that many and can usually come up with other solutions!

I just finish replacing a part of the deck...at home , not on the 74.
To synchronize 3 Profoto and 3 Canon flashs together, I got a module called Youngnuo YN622C.
Here is a  picture  to verify that everthing works together and trying to light every part of the model at the same level.

Even if it is artificial light, color are very close to what we see.
We can clearly see 2 tone of cherry wood; natural and  1 coat of tung oil.

Hi guys. I finally got the lower part of the quarter gallers and the counter all planked up. I didn't leave it bare and painted it to match the wales. One thing about it this time is it's easy on the eyes which makes me think that maybe just maybe I got it right or at least close to being right.  Gary

    Hi Siggi52 !
Your last sketch is more accurate than mine, thank you! I overlooked one detail, the position of rail on the other side. But according to your sketch, the floor of stool will be more higher, especially in the rear.
I used your method to measure the height by scale, but she's  Hms warrior because I didn't have the draught of Alfred.I think this height can satisfy the average person, although it's quite uncomfortable.. But my personal idea is that the floor of stool will be a little lower than the upper deck.

    If i move to it's port,it will be 6' 2".

I checked out Mr. Goodwin's book. If i follow his structure, the height of my 74gun project is 0.45m, I think maybe I need a step or simplify it, just like Franklin's model.

The internal space height 1.97M-2 1/2",it's about 1.9M.

Although I have this idea personally-see below figure ,but it has no any basis,so i think i will simplify it.

    HJX
