Part 177 – Mounting Bower Anchors

The plan has been to suspend the wood stocked bower anchor from the starboard cathead as depicted in the picture of the ship docked at San Francisco.  The iron stock anchor is to be placed in its storage position on the port side of the forecastle.   The first picture shows mounting chocks and two securing eyebolts for anchor storage.

The next picture shows the iron-stocked bower anchor in position, secured by a rope lashing to eyebolts on the margin plank.

The positioning and means of securing the anchors is somewhat speculative, but typical.  In the next picture, eyebolts have been installed below the arms and a lashing is being touched with thinned white glue to secure the seizing.

In the next picture, the starboard anchor has been suspended from the trip chain on the cathead.

The cable chain is also threaded on to the shackle.  This shackle has a threaded bolt which will be trimmed to size later.  A hooked brass rod can be seen inserted from above the windlass through the hawse hole to fish the chain under the forecastle.

The next picture shows the chain pulled through over the top of the windlass.

The string shown in the picture has been threaded over the windlass so the chain can be taken over for another turn.  In the next picture the chain has been wound over the windlass and dropped through the chain tube to the hold.

The last picture shows the suspended anchor ready for release.  The shackle bolt remains untrimmed at this stage.

The next step will be to make and install the smaller stream anchor.

The two thin strakes of wales are in.  I made the mast step and the steps for the two capstan axles.  The step for the mast has a rectangular hole and the ones for the capstans are round for the diameter of the axles.  There is nothing in the Grice drawings about the steps so I took some liberty.  They are fit but not permanently attached.

The second wale strakes have been installed.  Clamped to the frames and held tight against the first strake.
Once the glue sets, I pull off the stern timber jig.

I needed to re-glue the stern frames.  There is hardly anything to glue to and when I removed the Jig a couple came loose.  The key is to hold them in the jig while the wales are being glued on.  That meant cutting away some of the jig so I could get my fingers and clamps in there.  I cut the jig back to just where the outermost timbers meet and I beveled the edge of the slots.  Spacers were glued between the timbers to stiffen the section.  See picture.  The glue is drying on the first two wales now.  After the second strakes are on, I'll pull off the jig, hopefully it will come off easily.

The stern timbers have been glued to the wing transom using the jig shown several posts back.  The outer ones (which were doubled to get the fairing right) may need just a hair sanded off.  I put a temporary batten across the inside for more support.  The wales go on next, which will  provide much more support.

    Part 116 – Bow Decoration

Young America's bow decoration is interesting for a number of reasons.  Each side is different.  Just aft of a billet decorated with greenery, the carved figures rest mostly on the waist planking and partially on the base of the billet.  There were no headboards, so it is not clear how these were mounted on the original ship – much less how to mount them on the model -  due to the angle between the two surfaces.  Also, unlike the gilded stern decoration, the figures at the bow were painted in natural colors.  All this, like many other aspects of the ship, is based on Bill Crothers research.

After some unsuccessful attempts to fashion a wood base in the angle, I finally decided to sculpt these as six separate pieces, then fit them together on the bow.
The first picture shows the initial figures, sculpted with MagicSculpt® on wax paper taped flat on the pattern sheet.

The figures are quite small.  The starboard side features a female figure – presumably Liberty – with a shield flanked by draped flags.  On the port side an American Eagle is substituted for the female figure.  Below is the sculpted female figure before any post-hardening refinement.  The points on the flag staffs are thumb tack points.

The next picture shows some refining of the sculpture using a very small chisel.

In the next picture the fragile greenery has been lifted off the waxed paper, laid on the billet and touched with a drop or three of thin CA.

Refinement of the greenery was done after being glued on.  In the next picture the three port figures have been fitted and glued on with CA.

The figures were set into soft sculpting material placed in the angle between the billet and the side, than pushed into a fit.  Some modification of the parts was needed for this.  The sculptures must leave clearance for the square bowsprit to slide in and out.  Excess material was removed.

After attachment, the figures were primed with thinned flat black enamel.  The entire hull was given one last coat of acrylic paint and the figures were painted using acrylic gouache.  The next picture shows the starboard decoration.

The next picture shows the port side.

The greenery is actually brighter with light highlights than shown in the photos.  The next picture, from dead ahead, shows both sides.  Photos like these and closer ones were very helpful in judging the paint job and suggesting improvements.  The model went back and forth a few times for these.

The acrylic gouache used for painting the figures dries dead flat, causing an almost two dimensional appearance in the photos – especially in the close ups.  I may give these a coat of semi-gloss medium, perhaps the acrylic sanding sealer I used over the stern lettering.

Speaking of that, I received the second order of dry transfers, so I was able to correct the letters that were photo shopped in the last post.  The last picture shows the repaired letters – unadulterated.

This picture was taken before the final repair on the C.  After repair the dry transfer letters were given a coat of diluted sanding sealer.   I am also quite happy with the final black finish on the hull – shown in this picture.

With all this work done, the lower framing was given a last coat of wax, so the model should not have to be inverted again, I hope.  This will allow me to get on with work on the upper deck – cabins, etc.

    Part 176 – Whisker Booms

After a couple weeks on my favorite beach – one passed by Young America on her last fateful voyage – I have now returned refreshed and ready for the fall modeling campaign.  The whisker booms were completed just before we left.

Whisker booms were iron extensions to the catheads that served as spreaders for the chain jibboom and flying jibboom guys.  The first picture shows the installation of these fragile-looking members.

The whiskers extend about 5 feet from the ends of the catheads and are bolted to the after sides.  Each has formed cleats on the top face through which will pass the chain guys.

The whisker booms were made from hard brass plate and were shaped by hand methods – sawing and filing.  In the next picture a jeweler's saw with a fairly wide blade is being used to cut the inner line of the end cleat on the pair of booms.

Apart from these initial cuts, each boom was shaped individually.  The next picture shows one finished boom and one in progress.

To be sure these would smoothly pass the chain guys they were tested as shown below with some of the correct-size chain.

In the next picture the port boom is held in place with a clamp while the run of the chain guy is being checked.

The guys will obviously be installed later when the bowsprit is installed and rigged.  The next picture shows the port boom temporarily bolted to the cathead.

The bolts were silver-soldered into the booms before blackening, then rounded off and cut to length.  The bolts were then CA glued into drilled holes in the cathead.

The last picture shows the finished boom on the port side.

Well...now that the bath remodel is done I can spend some time on the GR.

So I finished up the fore deck house and the next one with the long boats mounted.   Here are some images..and one giving some reference with a penny for scale.
