  1. Thanks, Freddy. I've since prepared to glue the next two deck sections in place but I have to trim the quarterdeck pieces...too wide just yet. Last chance today to make any progress...having fun while I can
  2. Meeti g the challenges - good on you! This isn't just a matter of sticking pieces together while following instructions. Are you having fun yet?
  3. In cruising through this build log, I have determined that I need to build this ship as well. Almost regretting not building it first, but there it is. A classic Frigate. Nuff said. Thank you for sharing your progress with us.
  4. Looks like a lovely job to me! Welcome to the site, Guy.
  5. Darn, I thought that I posted here earlier. Nonetheless...great to see you working on a project, dragzz. That is a lovely paddlewheeler! I tried to build it many, many years ago but failed miserably. I can see that you will have better success than I did. Enjoy the journey! Bill
  6. In the previous photo, the after hatch opening was covered. I cut the strips between the two hatches to the same length. For the rest of the area (gun deck) I staggered the planks to a degree but nothing like scale. I'm not sure how I feel about the job but there it is. I put a coat of spar varnish on it last night and sanded most of it off this morning - I want the wood sealed but 'raw' and unfinished...scrubbed, as it were. A little more sanding is needed to take the gloss off and I'll call it good. Moving on to upper deck supports (I think).
  7. Hey Freddy - in two of the photos above ("Decking") you show the fore and aft bulkheads with green backing. What is the green material? I don't see anything similar in my kit box. Is this the "38" you were mentioning to me in email?
  8. Freddy, as far as I know (from guessing) the wood I'm using for decking is "Bass Wood". Not completely uniform in colour, but close. Not entirely uniform in thickness either, as it turns out. I have had this bundle of 'lumber' for decades. I don't remember where I got it or what it was a part of (if anything). So far it's raw, with a little dry glue smeared on parts of the surface. I just came from my bench where I glued the last pieces of decking on. I plan to sand it this evening. With respect to a finish - as you know I want it to appear well scrubbed. I'm thinking a single coat of spar varnish will be what I apply (because I happen to have some spar varnish). But...still a bit early to know for sure.
  9. Very nice, Freddy. As we have discussed - much to be learned, much to be discussed. I can see that some items are missing from my kit already - that isn't really encouraging but I suspect, like everything else, can be overcome. Watching closely!
  10. With the lower deck vestibule decked and in place I was able to glue down the gun deck pieces (after sawing them to fit). As soon as they were dry I began working on decking the gun deck. I can see that I'll be doing some significant sanding before I progress too far. I actually finished gluing the last plank on this deck this morning...I plan to start sanding this evening. I am hoping for an almost white finish after applying one coat of spar varnish to keep the dust out of the wood. In the photo, note the complete lack of any markings on the deck pieces. All other Norske Love builds I've seen have decking planks printed on them. None of the parts in my kits are marked in any way - I'm guessing what is what. That is working so far I am going for brain surgery (literally) in less than a week and therefore I don't expect to make a lot of progress in the next week or two. Just the same, I'll accomplish what I can in the few days I have available to me before I turn myself in. Who knows...maybe I'll wake up with much better building skills!!
  11. I finished the development of my little table saw to a point where I could rip deck planking...and I ripped a pile. The saw worked quite well. I (as a Safety Professional) was leery of the spinning blade. I used a push stick and remained vigilant throughout the operation. In the end, I hardly lost any fingers at all and I have a pretty good stack of decking to use. I'll have to do as much again but the hurdle of building the saw base is behind me.
  12. Hey Freddy, thanks for dropping by - admitedly there I am not at all far along with my build but it is coming!
  13. I like to shop at Hobby Wholesale in Edmonton. If they don't have it in stock, they'll get it for you but you have to be patient.
  14. Have you identified what you do want in terms of a specific kit?
  15. Michael - Thanks for stopping by. I'm moving a lot slower on this build than I would have in the past. I want to be sure of every step rather than have to go back and repair mistakes (something that I wasn't always careful about in the past, to my frustration). I like the advanced nature of the kit...the lack of instructions is neat in that I am required to think and get involved rather than cut stuff out and slap it together....that is really what I wanted when I went looking for a kit. I have spent a lot of time crusing other build logs and learning as I go. For others that are building this kit, I see that theirs came with a little information and detail on the laser-cut sheets of parts. Mine are totally blank - another challenge But hey - if it wasn't the challenge factor, I wouldn't be doing this at all! If I had to do it again, I would have bought an RN frigate kit. However I am not very patient and bought what was in stock. I do like this ship though - she is very very pretty!
  16. Customs isn't such an issue these days (at least I haven't had any issues in the past few years) with our dollars being so close. And really, there are outlets available in Canada. If they aren't advertising mail order they will likely help out just the same. I know of several in Alberta - close enough to BC and no sales tax.
  17. Because I am at a point where decking is required, my build is on hold. In the meantime I am working at building a little table saw base for my Dremel tool so that I can cut the decking I need in order to progress this project. I am using the guidelines in the 'instructable' found online and adapting them to fit my needs. This is a fun project in itself - I hope to be ripping lumber in about a week.
  18. Hey dragzz...where in BC? I suspect there are several places (in the province, at least) where you can find what you need at reasonable rates..."reasonable" beiong open to discussion...
  19. My Norske Love kit came without scribed/pinted deck planking lines on the deck pieces. Rather than draw them in, I intend to plank the decks (simply because I have a bundle of 111 X 6 mm strips). 6 mm is entirely too wide to use this lumber as is, so I need to cut them (rip lengthwise). I will be happy with 3mm wide planks. I cannot figure out a simple, accurate & efficient way to do the cutting and I'm hoping someone here will suggest something...anyone please? Cheers! Bill
  20. It came to me moments ago....doh! I rushed to my ipad to delete the thread (can we do that?) but you had already replied. Thanks, Russ
  21. Where did all this sawdust come from???
