Now I moved on to my dreaded upper railing system

Now that I finished it, I am glad that I waited until this point in the build to install the upper railing.
If I had done it earlier, I would have had a hard time with the belaying pins and line wraps. Also, I am glad I pre-slotted the lower railing earlier in the build. It would have been almost impossible for me to have slotted the lower railing at this stage.
However, it was still difficult to install the upper railing at this point. I had the most problems trying to work behind all the shroud areas.
I am thankful to be done!

Earlier in this log, I have some photos of the steps I took to make the railing pieces and some photos of the slotted lower railing.
Here is a re-posting of a couple of those photos.

Photos of the finished upper railing. I left them natural (decided not to paint them white) in order to match the look of my model.

I am nearing the end of my build.
    My next steps are:
    1. Finish installing the remaining 4 flags
    2. Make and install the anchor floating bobbers (is that what they are called??)  (1 on each side)
    3. Finish the remaining lower sail rigging
    4. Work on the stern lantern

As always, thanks of visiting and thanks for the "likes"!!

    Hello and Happy New Year!

Before finishing the upper railing, I thought I should finish the installation of the large stern flag (while I had easy access! )

First I attached lines to two small rings set apart by the width of the flag.

I then made and shaped the flag pole. After sanding and staining, I attached it to the stern with some pins. I left off the top cap for now, until I finish with the flag

I took the rigged line (in the first photo) and wrapped the edge of the flag fabric around it and glued it using fabric glue.
Then I wrapped the flag around a stick, and left it for a day, in order to give the flag some curved droop.
As a side note, the flags that came with the kit are fine on 1 side, but the colors are really faded on the back side, which is not great. So I will try to hide the back side as much as possible

I blackened and added some thin brass rings that will hold the flag to the pole.

I slid the rings onto the pole from the top. Then added a small block to the pole, along with a small eyelet to the deck for the rigging.

Finished flag with the top cap glued on.

Finally after a one year, the basic structure of the upper deck is finished. I never realised I was that slow building my ship :-)

I don't plan to add more ledges between the carlings so there is a better view at the lower decks. Cutting the mortice in the wing transom was a bit tricky, especially as they had to be right the first time.

Time to add tome more bits to the deck.

    Thanks Sam,

For you also all the good stuff for 2016.

    And an update again.
I don't put the blocks and deadeyes on it yet.
I want to do that when all the masts are ready.

Thanks again all y'all for the likes and yes, Sjors that's what makes this community of ship enthusiasts so unique.  A lot of knowledge that's freely shared.  Thanks again Jan, it's much appreciated.  If you ever need help in fixing or rigging your airplane - I'm your man   I have even done rigging of a biplane!

I really never thought ahead about the rigging much until just now when I realized that perhaps I may have a problem.

I received some good info from Jan and need some time to look everything over and think about how I'm going to solve my belaying problem.  I never thought about utilizing the mast tops until Jan just now mentioned it.  That'll be a real good idea and I'll have to seriously look into that.
I'll make a couple sketches of my deck layout and see where all those ropes need to go to.  Should have done that to start with but better late then never
But even Jan has a few head-scratching situations with his Prins William kit, so I don't feel all too bad

We have our daughter Marianne and grandson Troy in the house for a week's visit, so I guess that my shipyard work will take a backseat.  But this certainly is a most welcome time for us.  Weather is great and the beach is beckoning.

Y'all have a very good New Year in good health.

    Cheers,

All the chains, chainplates and deadeyes are on at both sides.
Because I have to paint a few things that was damaged on the way, I thought I will do something different.......
I have started the journey with the rudder.........
I put the pindels on and hanging the rudder on to the hull.
    I think ( in my opinion ) it's not to bad !
One can go a little higher ( if I can remove it )
Otherwise I will keep it this way.
Now I have to make the brackets ?
Those things what goes on the rudder and on the hull.
Another funny job ! (nope )

    Hi Mates,

Thanks for all of your nice comments, stopping by, and "likes" always so appreciated !

    --------------------------

    I decided to re-do the six lines under the platform. The knots were weak and out of scale. Decided that black sewing thread would “disappear” better. But now;

going through a frustrating bit. Struggling with my first attempt at actually mounting rigging. And to think this is only a very small bit of the first section OMG..(:-)

Having a hard time finding a proper way of seizing the shrouds, attaching the upper deadeyes as well as their corresponding ropes. I have looked at other build logs for advice, but still can’t get out of my thinking “box” to allow for a more pleasant experience.

Then later as I was starting to attach the first of the six shrouds I realized that the mast was too short (See pic), and that the wood cap that connects the second mast was also too low (too close the platform base) Grrrrrrr.

I looked at the Corel sheet for wood cap fit location (wrong!! Corel) and then failed to, at least, pay more attention to the length the second mast should have been. I will be more attentive with the other masts. Last pic is 1/10th the way it should look more-or-less

So in closing not too “happy” right now, so not sitting for extended lengths of time. Hmmm.

Well of to Berkeley next week to see our son, and his wife’s family for the holidays. They all enjoy good single malts music, and good tequila

Cheers everyone - do enjoy your holidays as well

    Hello!

I did some more work on the foremast sail bowlines and I finished rigging the top spritsail braces.

The foremast topgallant sail bowlines also passing thru blocks on the top stay.

The foremast top sail bowlines also passing thru blocks on the middle stay.

    The foremast lower sail bowlines

The top spritsail yard brace rigged

All the bowlines and spritsail braces passing thru the blocks on the bowsprit mast

The bowlines and braces at their final belaying pin locations

I am almost done with all the rigging on the ship.
The remaining lines to go on the ship are:
    1. Lower spritsail sheet
    2. Lower foresail sheets and tacks
    3. Lower main sail sheets, tacks, and braces
    4. Lower mizzen yard braces

I will install these lines after I finish the delicate upper railing system on the model.

So, my next steps are to:
    1. Install and rig the stern flag pole and flag (while I can still get my hands in that area)
    And
    2. Install the upper railing system on both sides of the ship.

Thanks for visiting my log and for the previous "likes" !!!!
