The wood arrived and is currently laying flat on my bench with some heavy weights on it. I guess spending a week in the back of truck in this heat and humidity did it. I'm also going to have to rework my drawings a tad as, for example, the quarter inch thick wood isn't. It's about 1/32 shy of 1/4 inch so I'll need to close up the tolerance on the slots in the false keel.

great fun, how the puzzle matches
the plywood that was left from making bulkheads was just enough for the brackets

It wont matter if you remember to use many brackets on your build board. It will straighten any twist and warp. I used three but you can use 4 or 5 if you want. These are super easy to make. You just need to make little triangles (right angles) with a base. These are a bit fancier but they dont need to be. They should be screwed into the baseboard so you can remove them when planking the lower hull. I hesitate to sell these because they are so easy to make on your own. In fact I removed them from the installment for chapter one because some folks complained they could make them on their own and didnt need to pay extra for them. I havent laser cut any more of them but if some of you need these I could cut more of them and sell them as a separate item. They can be reused on any project. You can line the inside with tape or even felt so they wont damage your keel. They work a treat.

Just note that the first ten 1st installments have three of these. So you guys got a bonus!!!! Screws and washers not included.

 Hi everybody,
after finishing the Queen Anne-barge, I am quite excited to join in the Winchelsea project.
Yesterday I got started, printing all the plans and cutting the first plywood peaces for the bulkheads.
I use 6 mm birch plywood (the heavy one) and made the main part out of one Peace (not 3 peaces like the laser-cut Version)

 Hi all,
No cursing this time Edward ha ha, well not on the rudder at least.
I still haven't started the Deadeye Strops yet, next session l hope. I only had a limited time this morning so just painted the masts. They are now ready for their Blocks and Cleats.
 Best wishes as always,
 The Lazy Saint.

Cheers Mark, OC for kind words and the likes, appreciate the ongoing interest.

@Pat - he does sup while working 🙂
@Bob - Welcome aboard! My main source for this is The Fully Framed Model by David Anscherl (in this case Vol II, page 145), an excellent and very digestibly reference pulling together information only otherwise available in primary sources. As Phil points out above, line would be looped around the tackle blocks a couple of times first, and this is a slightly simplified representation, as pointed out, this can be seen on HMS Victory in practice. I think a lot of modelling decisions are based on aesthetics, and my personal preference is for a nice clear deck. Practically, guessing this would have kept the line off of an exposed deck which would likely have resulted in rot issues over extended periods of time.
@Phil - I appreciate the interest and kind words. The blocks are 1/8" single and double, and the paint used is Admiralty Red Ochre supplied by Caldercraft. The fine thread is UNI-Thread W 6/0 Tan - not sure what that means, but that's what's on the reel! Nothing fancy, think I picked it up at a local craft store some time ago, its synthetic so need to use GS-Hypo cement rather than PVA if it needs to be secured.
@Vane - I'm embarrassed to say it, photos are from an iPhone.... 🤐

 Hi all,
During this session l added the eyelets, a simple job that l found enjoyable because of it's simplicity. No fretting about making errors (l hope)
Tomorrow l will add Cleats and black paint. Then its back to fretting as l ponder the Channel's and Chainplates.
 Best wishes as always,
 The Lazy Saint.

Beautiful workmanship! Thanks for sharing it.

I saw this treatment of the gun tackles, which I believe you called "frapping." Is there some historical authority for this practice in the old days? It seems lubberly. Unwrapping and untwisting what would end up being "kinky" cordage if stowed in that fashion would be the last thing one would want to be doing as they "beat to quarters." (The same goes for "flemishing," coiling tackle falls into coiled flat mats on the deck. That would get you a real chewing out by the chief bosun's mate. )

Many thanks all for the comments and likes, definitely good to have people along for the journey..

Feels like a chapter is coming to a close, finally seem to be closing in on completing the upper deck. Definitely a multitude of time consuming small tasks. First off I needed to address the fixed part of the gangway. This is shown quite clearly in plan view on page 46 of AOTS Diana, however it is not shown in profile. Given that it appears to contain its own lodging knee, I decided to extend the profile of the deck beam. This seems to make sense when recognizing that a ladder will eventually be located here. This highlights one of the inconsistencies in the AOTS book, many diagrams show the non-flush gangboards which I understand were going out of fashion at this point to be replaced by flush gangboards. Hoping I'm not too far off the mark here. A strip with a slight profile was added also to the deck beam to sit flush with the false quarterdeck.

The base plate to the stove was ripped off and replaced despite my intentions to leave as, hopefully this sits a little more harmoniously.

Cables have been added and "secured" to the various ring bolts beside the midship gratings. AOTS describes these as being used for stoppers, but decided to secure with simpler ring ropes as described in Lever. Stoppers have been modelled as per Lever on the 2 foremost ring bolts, but not yet tied on or attached permanently to allow me to finally decide (or others to refute) the approach taken.

Even though this area will only ever be glimpsed, time was spent fully building out the area around the foremast with the For jeer and for topsail sheet bitts as they would appear. The actual bitts on the fo'c'sl will be mounted to the deck, seemed unnecessarily complicated to build these fully. Couldn't quite figure out what was represented on diagrams for the fore jeer bitts until I saw interior photos of contemporary models in the Roger's Dockyard Model collection - but still no clue what the "swan neck" arrangement is called. What is very interesting is how crowded this forward area really is, fighting these guns must have been a real challenge.

Warning: Here follows some highly indulgent closeups taken on Captain's rounds! This is the closest I guess I'll get to seeing what this looked like in practice

And finally...some overall shots with where things stand..

I don't think you need to apologize. I like this site because it is friendly and generous. It's good to share your troubles sometimes. If others don't want to share then they shouldn't. And yes, there's always someone who has more troubles than life throws at each of us, but we shouldn't ignore them just because it's not the worse thing ever.

 All the best,
 Richard.

I want to take this moment to say a few words as it has been playing on my mind - I want to apologize for the way I came across with so much "self importance" regarding my personal issues - it was unfair and un considerate, as many good folk on here have thier own troubles and most keep it to them selves and just deal with it.
I felt rushed along with a moment of feeling that I needed to share my feelings on here, as to a large degree it feels like a second home - and feels like I have made some great friends - friendships that mean Alot to me.

 I am truly sorry.

 OC.

Plenty of chairs and the popcorn is fresh. I'm just about done doing drawings and have actually cut a few piece of boxwood for the keel. But really on hold until the plywood gets here later this week. Seems the holiday got in the way of the delivery truck.

 Clinkering on.
Time for an update, and review of progress.

 2033
A fairly slow process this clinkering business, I am doing two strakes per day.

 2035
Thus far each plank has been individually spiled, cut from boxwood sheet. I think this will be the case for all of them.

 2038
Each plank end at the bow is thinned slightly and an individual rabbet cut in the stem to hold it.
Very fine pins are used with the glue to hold the planks in place.
I use Amati (Very fine brass pins (A4136/10)) These have a flat head just shy of 1mm ø with a 0.5mm shaft, perfect for the job.

 2046
These are then removed. The pin holes aren’t a problem as the lower hull will be painted but will be re-drilled for representations of the bolts to be fitted.
Before fitting, each plank is trimmed to the tick marks and is used as a template for the opposite side.

 2045
At this stage I have completed 11 strakes and have started to fine down the lap of the strakes as they approach the stem and stern post.
All still very much wip at this point but I’m now feeling more confident that it’s starting to look like a clinkered hull.

Some progress pics after painting the hull. Never painted a surface with 3 different colours so that was a bit challenging. Turned out nice though. I just drilled the scuppers. Too hard to make the proper shape so I'll leave as is.
